Mandy and I attended a local Parade of Homes this weekend. This is an event where area builders are each invited to build a showcase home, then the homes are opened for the public to tour for a few weeks before they are sold (the home are priced in the 2- 5 million range). Its a lot of fun and the admission price goes to charity.
Anyway, this year 2 things struck me. First, the walls in every last room of these homes were painted brown. The carpeting and furniture were almost always brown as well. Yuck. It was like visiting the land of the mud people.
But the thing that struck me more than anything else was the toilet in a closet concept. In an attempt to provide privacy, they would stick the toilet in a closet sized room with its own door. Now, I know that this concept has been around for a long time (and I have never liked it), but you combine this with the brown walls and floors and the result is truly unpleasant. Its, small, dark place confining place that does not put one in a relaxed frame of mind. I never thought of a toilet as being opressive before, but these sure were. If I lived in one of these houses, I would simply hold on to it until I could visit a local gas station.
Has anybody else noticed this toilet in a toll booth type of design in new homes recently? What do you think of it?
