Toilets in Closets

Mandy and I attended a local Parade of Homes this weekend. This is an event where area builders are each invited to build a showcase home, then the homes are opened for the public to tour for a few weeks before they are sold (the home are priced in the 2- 5 million range). Its a lot of fun and the admission price goes to charity.

Anyway, this year 2 things struck me. First, the walls in every last room of these homes were painted brown. The carpeting and furniture were almost always brown as well. Yuck. It was like visiting the land of the mud people.

But the thing that struck me more than anything else was the toilet in a closet concept. In an attempt to provide privacy, they would stick the toilet in a closet sized room with its own door. Now, I know that this concept has been around for a long time (and I have never liked it), but you combine this with the brown walls and floors and the result is truly unpleasant. Its, small, dark place confining place that does not put one in a relaxed frame of mind. I never thought of a toilet as being opressive before, but these sure were. If I lived in one of these houses, I would simply hold on to it until I could visit a local gas station.

Has anybody else noticed this toilet in a toll booth type of design in new homes recently? What do you think of it?

Well, we have three bathrooms in our house and they are all split-baths, meaning each one is made up of two small rooms....rather than one larger room that would accomodate everything needed in a bathroom. Each of ours has the toilet along with tub/shower in one room, separated by a door, and the other room has the sinks/cabinets, etc. Personally, I really like the set-up because two people can be using the same bathroom at once: one can be showering while the other can be drying/curling their hair, or shaving, etc. It was great when the kids were growing up. :D

I've seen it in people's homes. I guess the whole concept of not caring what your husband/wife is doing is out the window.

It's not like it's smell prevention.

In our master bath in the new house there are two rooms. One with double sinks, and big closets and then the room with the tub, shower and camode...but they have sectioned the camode off with walls on each side. Its weird....Personally I would remove the two walls....cause you just feel all boxed in.

that's why they're called water closets. :)

Our potty is in a closet in our master bath. I like it because DH and I can both be in the bathroom at the same time. I like my privacy.

Yep, we've got one in our master bath. I love the "throne room" concept. Be careful though. I have friends in Texas who have the toilet in a closet in their HUGE master bath (everything's bigger in Texas!) Despite the acres (o.k., maybe JUST 400 sq.ft.)master bath, you have to straddle the toilet in order to close the door to the "closet". Poor design if you're in a hurry and like the privacy!:p

can't you just leave the door open if it's in the same room as your master bath? You know, just close the big door.

I guess I would feel weird walking into my bathroom, closing the door, then walking into a smaller room to use the toilet!! Kind of like I had something to hide.:p
