So how long is this gonna hurt? I had the big toenail done yesterday. I've heard everywhere from one week to a month. I don't have that kind of time. Lol. Dh is working and will be home tomorrow night. (Well hopefully in the morning but he will need to sleep so no help) I have to drive my daughter to and from school this morning and I have my nine month old all day so ibuprofen is the only friend I have. Lol. Chasing my little one is not going to be fun today. I already put the dog in our computer room because he steps on toes all the time and he is 80 lbs.
Today is just going to be one of those days I want to be over. Lol.

Plus today is my dh and my anniversary. Poor guy thought he was only going to be on a quick up and back train today but found out he will have a hotel stay in between.

Thanks for any info you can give on toenail removal. My mil said hers was an easy and quick recovery but it was a middle toe and she had a few days off work with her foot up.

I've had my toenail removed about 10 times (often it was both big toes at the same time :crazy2:) It hasn't been for many years though so I don't recall exactly. I remember a week of it being rather uncomfortable (particularly dressing removal and the toes were also badly infected so that may have made it worse). I think you will not be able to wear closed toe shoes for maybe a month. But i guess it all just depends on how quickly you heal. Once the toe starts to dry out it won't be as bad.

My son had both of his big toes done at the same time and he spent a day or so after surgery on the lazy boy and then was up and about - was just careful not to bump it. He didn't take a bunch of meds and was back in shoes and out with friends within a week.

My dmil had all 10 of hers done at the same time and after a few days they were tender, but not painful. She has a freaky high pain tolerance though.

Mine was because my dog stepped on my toe and it got infected. I went through two rounds of antibiotics first though.

Why would one need to have toenails removed?

My son had a partial toenail removal due to a massively curved nail (extremely ingrown and causing persistent infections). It was the best thing he's had done. He wasn't extremely painful afterward (just used ibuprofen), and was able to put on regular (closed toe) shoes within a week.

I had my 2 big toe nails removed about 5 years ago. It was the most painful thing I have ever experienced. If I did not have them wrapped tightly is was awful. It took me 2 weeks and I am a nurse. So up on my feet all day. I had mine removed b/c of fungus.

I had the big toe on my right foot removed and it did hurt when I drove for about 3 days. Walking is ok, but I wore some old stretched out TOMS at first. I could tell the nail bed was swollen, and when that went down was when it stopped hurting.

And yes, having it taken off was extremely painful. If I'd known in advance I would have taken some serious pain meds.

Well I had it off yesterday morn and after a day of chasing a nine month old and various kid stuff I am doing OK. I can feel that the nail bed is swollen. And part of my healing is to soak it in Epson salt water. Well that lasted about fifteen seconds. Lol. I put some iodine and triple bac ointment and rewrapped it. Tonight I will soak again (well try) and rewrap it.

I had mine taken off last year because it kept getting infected. I had it done on a Friday and didn't think it was all that bad. I had a bike workout on Saturday and it bled a little, but no real pain. I was back in the pool with it bandaged and taped really well on Sunday. I didn't try to run on it for about a week, however, because I was a chicken. :scared:

The worst part was I made the mistake of taking off the bandage before getting in the shower the next morning. The water hitting it was not pleasant! :faint:

I run a lot and the same stupid toenail keeps getting infected. I really wish I would have had the doctor remove it permanently. :crazy2:

Good luck, OP! pixiedust:

Why would one need to have toenails removed?

Learn something new every day! I had absolutely no idea this was a "thing"! When I was a teenager I had a toenail fall off due to running, but I never knew people had it done voluntarily!

I had my big toenail removed seven days ago and it's still extremely tender.

I tried wearing flip-flops at first but since I had to be on my feet a lot, I needed some supportive shoes. So, I took an old pair of athletic shoes and cut the whole top of the toe area off. It looks stupid, but ahhhh nirvana to my feet. I saw the doctor today and he said the toe looks good. I, on the other hand, think it looks like something that an alien would give birth to, but then I don't have a medical degree so what do I know?

I am concerned about when the toenail starts growing back in, though, as my brother-in-law had to have his removed three times before it grew back in right.

I had to have mine done because of the dreaded toenail fungus under the nail that was distorting the nail and making wearing shoes uncomfortable. I've used every product imaginable for two years now and this was my last-ditch attempt to get rid of the fungus.

Had my big toenail removed last year due to infection. It was not pleasant, the needles in my foot were the worse. I took off the next day from work (I work in a restaurant behind the counter) and then wore my husbands slipper on that foot for a day or 2 and then my slipper for a day or 2. I am still waiting for the nail to grow completely in. It has only grown about 3/4 of the way in a years time.
