Toddler in daybed with rail or crib?

We'll be at the Poly when the little one is 15 months old. What is our best option for his sleeping? With us on the bed? Should we have housekeeping bring us a crib (I've heard they aren't so good)? Would he be okay in the day bed as long as we put a bedrail on? He's a pretty big boy already - 24lbs at 9months, so I'm not even sure he'd fit comfortably in a port-a-crib by that time.

Anyone? HELP!!

You can request bedrail from Mousekeeping at no charge but the PNP might be the way to go. Our youngest, who was 2.5 yrs. old during our last trip and the size of a 3.5 yrs. old, slept in the PNP just fine. We put it in one of the corners and I take one of the extra sheets and wrap around the outside to help block out some light and he goes right to sleep. They aren't the most cushy things but he doesn't seem to mind and even tried climbing in one evening after we got back to the room rather late. I'm all for keeping the youngest 'caged' in a strange environment because he is less likely to fight going to bed, if he wakes up before we do he won't wander around the room, and being in a pnp is closer to being in a crib which he is still in at home. Not sure if he'll fit this trip but we'll try it. :)

I am of no help. The PNP was not comfy for our little man he weighed about 27 pounds at 18 months and he ended up in our bed. We pushed it against the wall and got a bedrail for the bottom but it worked out great.

I don't know if you can put a side rail on the daybed.

You may want to consider renting a full size bed or toddler bed from A Baby's Best Friend (www.abbf.com). I've used them a couple of times and they had great service and clean products. The rooms at the Poly are certainly big enough for either to fit in comfortably. The toddler bed was easier as there is no assembly on that.

Does anyone have pictures of the crib/packnplay that they have at the Poly?

My DD stopped sleeping in a PNP at 8 months... but she loved a port-a-crib even last summer at 1.5 years. Does your son like a snug place to sleep? Because if that is the case he might prefer a cozy crib.

I wouldn't think he'd want to be too cozy - he moves around a lot and is always bumping into the side of the crib and crying.

I worry about putting him in a pack and play because it will be so weird and unfamiliar. I'd think he would be okay by then with the daybed and a rail, but didn't know if anyone had tried it. He might be okay just with the daybed mattress on the floor, so that if he rolls off, no big deal, we could always fold up a bedspread or something to cushion his fall. I'd wake up for sure if that happened. I'm a very light sleeper....

Anyhow - if anyone has other advice, please post - I'm rather concerned about this....

I don't think you can take the matress of the daybed either. It has been a few years since I've stayed at the Poly but I did stay after they switch to the new style daybed a few years ago. The "matress" of the daybed is actually on the back side of the daybed against the wall when the daybed is in the couch position. You pull up on a tab on the top of the daybed and flip the backside over to get to the matress. So I don't know that you be able to get the matress off.

Have you ever seen the readybeds? They are a matress and sleeping bag in one. They have a "my first ready bed" that has "bumpers" on the side. You can see them at www.readybed.com

My family of 5 plus another adult friend went to the Poly 3 times before my youngest turned 3. We rented a full size crib the first year, a toddler bed the next year and used a ready bed the 3rd year. The ready bed we picked up and put against the wall during the day to get it out of the way.

You CAN put a bedrail on the daybed. I've seen pictures of it set up like that. The bed rails Disney uses are an older style, that clamp onto the side of the mattress. They are not the kind that "require" a twin sized or larger mattress, like all the ones on the market today.

In addition, the Poly daybed has "arms" which is good, because with a bedrail on, it will be almost like a crib (i.e. all enclosed)

I'd just do that. As a second resort, you can try the Pack and Play. We took our son to D-Land and he was 20 months at the time and he's a BIG boy! He's super tall and heavy (he's 37 inches now at 23 months). He slept in the pack and play just fine. He still uses one every day at home to nap. He is fine in it. He moves around a lot, but he SLEEPS curled up, usually. He doesn't sprawl.

As a final resort, I've heard of people folding up a blanket and laying it on the floor between one of the queen beds and the wall, and putting pillows down to "block off" under the bed, if necessary. Their toddlers have seemed to love having a little "nook" to sleep in, and as a bonus, since they're down lower, the light from the room/t.v. won't disturb them.

You have plenty of options. Something will end up working.

Every bedrail that I've ever used at Disney (at Poly, POR, POFQ, ASMo) has been the type that has short slats that goes under a matress. It doesn't need to be a twin size but the slats would have to go under something.

The Poly did their major redesign of rooms in 2005. Prior to that the daybeds had a regular twin size matress on them. When you use the new daybed for sleeping you do not sleep on the surface you sit on when it in the couch position.

Here are some photos I found here on the Dis of the daybed. This is in the couch position:

I agree with lovesdumbo, in that all of the bed rails that we've used at the various WDW resorts have been the type that have to slide under the mattress. The latest ones were like "The First Years Fold Down Double Bedrail" - http://www.amazon.com/First-Years-F...ie=UTF8&s=baby-products&qid=1204080179&sr=8-7

The other ones we've used have been similiar but they just didn't fold down when not in use. None of the ones we've used have clamped onto the mattress so since I'm not familiar with the Poly daybed I'm not sure if the ones similiar to what we've used would work.

Something will work and your little guy will probably be so tired by the end of the day he won't care where he gets put.

At the Poly we got a port-a-crib, NOT a pack n play.

My big 18 month old nephew slept in a port-a-crib on another trip last summer. He is big. And while it took a little bit for him to get comfortable, he managed for the few nights.

Though I like the ready-bed idea. I was already thinking about it since we're thinking about Oct and our toddler will be 22 months then.

Let us know what you decide!

You can put a bed rail on the sofa pullout. It worked great for our granddaughter but she was 3. Since the arms of the sofa are the head and foot it does make sort of a crib effect with the bed rail on and I think you could put two rails along the side so the child is completed "enclosed" on the bed.

Thanks for all the great ideas. I definitely feel better about this now. Great idea too about making the 'nook' between the beds. I know he can sleep on folded blankets on the floor because he does that now when nap-time comes and we are at friends' houses.

Glad the rails work with the daybed. We'll probably try this first. Looks like there are a few options that don't include renting. We're already spending a lot to be on the monorail line for our first 'toddler' trip, so I really don't want to have to rent.

Thanks to all of you!!!
