Toddler beds and baby proofing DVC rooms?

We rented a Toddler bed from A Baby's Best Friend (ABBF) and it was great! Themed bedding (Toy Story) and it really made the difference in a great night's sleep and not sleeping. here is their link: www.abbf.com

Thanks so much for the link - so we'll get one of these toddler beds rented for the 2 year old, and my 4 year old can use the rails on one of the queen beds. My older son I guess can get the living room fold-out. Does anyone know how heavy the fold-out chair is and if it's possible to move into one of the bedrooms? The adults will want to stay up in the living area after kids go to bed. This will allow us to use a 2BR instead of having to go with the GV for 2 couples with 3 kids total. Of course, kids always wake up early morning and crawl in with us then, but at least we can get most of night to ourselves this way. Thanks so much everyone for great tips.

We tried to move the chair at AKV into the bedroom...while it was heavy, 2 adults could handle it, however it would not fit through the door opening so it couldn't be put in the BR.

No, it's not possible. The furniture is not meant to be moved from room to room.

Another thing that is now concerning me about safety for the children is whether or not the DVC villas have Venetian Blinds hanging by the balcony doors. There was a horrible accident this past Friday in Long Island, NY...a 2-year-old toddler was playing with his 4-year-old brother in their den (their father was in the house in another room) and the 2-year-old got choked by the metal cord of the Venetian blinds. He passed away the following afternoon. He would have had his 3rd birthday next week. My heart goes out to that family. His mother is a teacher at my nieces' school here in Brooklyn. I can't stop thinking about that poor child and his family and what a nightmare it is for all of them. So of course, now I am wondering if I will have to worry about this at WDW. Anyone know if they use these in the villas?

It's such a sad thing...that something like that could happen to a child just like that. We've all been praying for the family.

Here's the article from Consumer Reports on that topic. These kind of cords are still used today in most hotel rooms where we have stayed. This is so sad.

Long Island toddler dies after strangling on window blind chain

A two-year-old Long Island boy died Saturday after getting his neck caught in the chain of vertical blinds in the family home. According to local news reports, the boy was playing with another child when he became tangled in the chain. His father and medical professionals were unable to revive him.

This sad event underscores the dangers that the cords and chains on blinds and shades pose to young children. Last December, the Consumer Product Safety Commission and the Window Covering Safety Council joined together to "recall for repair" 50 million Roman shades and roll-up blinds. Since then the CPSC has announced the recall of 400,000 more shades and blinds. And a number of major retailers have joined the recall as well.

In the past twenty years there have been 200 fatalities from blind and shade cords, says the CPSC. Other groups say the number is higher. Parents for Window Blind Safety, an advocacy group, reports that a child dies every two weeks from strangulation on corded window treatments.

The WCSC features instructions for retrofitting blinds and shades on its Web site. The method depends on the type of blinds or shades you have. Looped cords should be cut into two single strands. Beaded chains or nylon cords should be tightly tethered to the wall. For more information, illustrations and to order a free retrofit kit, go to the WCSC's Web site or call WCSC's toll-free phone line at 1-800-506-4636.

In the meantime, check all the window coverings in your home and follow this advice:
Make sure there are no accessible cords on the front, side, or back of the product. Cordless window coverings are recommended for homes where children live or visit.
Do not place cribs, beds, and furniture close to the windows because children can climb on them and gain access to the cords.
Make loose cords inaccessible.
If the window shade has looped bead chains or nylon cords, install tension devices to keep the cord taut.

Lots of great information here! Lots of questions that I wanted to ask but forgot! :lmao: I know that Disney provides the rails but has anyone heard if they offer the PNP and if so has anyone used one?

Every villa has a pack and play in the closet.

Wow, checked out their list of items they can deliver to your room - free of charge delivery and pick-up (but I would tip no less than $10 each time). Wow, if my kids were still babies or really little tots, I would be getting a lot more stuff to rent - like the rocking chair, bath tub, potty chair, security gate, bouncy chairs, sets of toys, exersaucer, even a baby monitor for a grand villa - awesome. Wow, travel with babies made so much easier! Check out their list of stuff - for a week's stay, say it's worth it:

Side note that I just want to mention. We stayed in a HA 1bdrm at BLT this past Xmas and my DD, 3.5, could not get enough of trying to turn the knods on the stovetop on. I know the odds of getting a HA room are small but I would mention this at check-in that you cannot have an HA room becuase of the toddlers.

Good point. At least for some of the kitchens you might be able to use a safety gate. We have a collapsible one from Evenflo that comes with a travel bag, but you also can get them from non-Disney rental services if you are flying. Some on listed this and other boards, but we used babysaway.com for a stroller and high chair.

Our favorite toddler babyproofing travel tip: ductape! You can tape up cords, over outlets, cabinets and closets shut... you name it. Not so good for sleeping arrangements (unless they sleep taped to a wall! ;) ) but great for lots of other things. Just remember to remove it.

That's what we used traveling around Europe with our 17 month old son - couldn't live without our duct tape! I flattened the roll, and packed it in our carry-on. Our umbrella stroller was nearly destroyed by the airline - we did gate check, and stroller came out busted. Whipped out my duct tape, and had temporary fix until got a new bolt from maintenance man at hotel where we were staying in Amsterdam.

Since Disney caters to all ages, wish they would just include the basic baby proofing stuff like sliding wall outlet plates, magnetic locks underneath sink kitchen cabinet, high up latches on balcony doors, and a security gate to keep them off stairs for (just for GV) - it's not that expensive, and could save a life.

If use duct tape, also need GOO Gone too!

Since Disney caters to all ages, they also cater to older guests who can have difficulty in opening up those latches, plugging something into a baby-proofed outlet, etc. So if parents want those things, they need to bring them theirselves.

Exactly what I was going to post!!

The high latches and the sliding outlet covers are both very easy to operate for the elderly - think they should be standard in all new apartment and hotel construction. i use them in my remodeling for apartment interiors. The magnetic cabinet lock takes a little getting used to, but they are really easy if there is a mark on the cabinet showing where to put the magnet. In a hotel though, the magnets for the locks would very like quickly get lost, though. None of these child-proofing features takes any additional strength, just some extra height over pint size tot size for several of them.

Think you may be thinking of those old plug covers that you have to prey back out with something like a screwdriver - hate those. The sliding wall plates are so much better.

These just got patented back in 2004, and are great - I ordered several cases and did all our outlets in our apartments - they have a cleaner look than regular outlets too:
