SADDLE BROOK, N.J. -- New Jersey activated its Amber Alert system Friday after the reported abduction at gunpoint of a 2-year-old girl.
Saddle Brook police said the girl was seized at about 9:30 a.m. The Amber Alert system was activated shortly before 10:30.
The girl, Angel Marcuz Rivera, a Hispanic female with green-grey eyes and long straight blonde hair, was last seen wearing blue jeans, a black coat, white Reebok sneakers, a pink long-sleeve shirt and one pink earring.
The suspect, Angel Manuel Rivera, approximately 26 years old, is 6-foot-1, approximately 220 to 230 pounds, wearing black jeans and boots and a nylon stocking cap.
The suspect allegedly carjacked a vehicle at gunpoint, although it was not immediately clear if he had taken the girl beforehand, or whether the girl was a passenger in the vehicle. Authorities could not immediately say whether the suspect and the girl are related.
The vehicle is described as a 2000 gray Daewoo four-door with New Jersey license NHD73F, and was believed to be headed either to Florida or Brooklyn, N.Y.
"Hopefully someone will see the vehicle and call us," said New Jersey State Police Sgt. Kevin Raymond. "This is obviously a dangerous guy."
The suspect is believed to be armed with a semiautomatic handgun and should be considered dangerous.
Anyone with information was advised to call 911.
The Amber Alert system is designed to quickly spread the word on a child abduction to law enforcement agencies and the news media, encouraging the public to call police if they see the people or vehicles being sought.
It involves broadcast alerts and activation of traffic sign boards on major highways with a description of the missing child and other pertinent information.
