Ok everyone, here's todays history lesson.

Today in:

1775, the battle of Bunker Hill took place, which actually took place on Breed's Hill. This was a victory for the British, but at a heavy cost.

1856, in Philadelphia, the Republican Party opened its first convention.

1885, the Statue of Liberty arrived in New York City aboard the French Ship Isere.

1928, Amelia Earhart embarked on a trans-Atlantic flight from Newfoundland to Wales, the first by a woman.

1944, the Republic of Irland was established.

1971, the United States and Japan signed a treaty which returned the island of Okinawa

and finally, in 1972, five burlars were arrested inside the DNC's headquarters at the Watergate complex in Washington D.C.

Hope you enjoyed todays lesson
