This just breaks my heart. So unnecessary. Such a waste. Such a brutal, hateful crime.

HAYLEY ELIZABETH PETIT 10/15/89-07/23/07 HAPPY 21st BIRTHDAY HAYLEY "I remember in this solemn hour, beloved daughter, the many joys you afforded me during your lifetime. I recall the days when I delighted in your physical and mental growth and planned for your future. Though death has taken you from me, you are not forgotten. Your spirit is enshrined in my heart. Heavenly God, I thank You for the precious gift that You entrusted to my keeping, and which in Your infinite wisdom You recalled. Though few were the years I rejoiced with my daughter, many were the blessings that she brought into my household. Teach me to live more nobly and to extend my love and devotion to others in thankfulness for the privilege of having had and loved this child. May her soul be bound up in the bond of eternal life and may her memory remain an inspiration to all who loved her." You did many, many good deeds with faith in your short life-more in 17 years than most do in a lifetime. MUCH LOVE, Dad and the Petit, Hawke, Chapman & Renn families

I don't know how that poor man goes on living. What hell he must go through daily. I agree what a brutal, horrible crime. It is proof that a person can be pure evil.

makes you want to hug your kids a little extra this weekend.

So sad. Society has definitely suffered a great loss when she was taken away much too soon.

Steven Hayes will have his sentencing hearing soon. The defense wanted the jury to be able to consider the expense of execution, which is higher, than imprisonment for life. Judge Blue ruled on that. He denied the motion from the defense saying we should not reduce moral issues to dollars and cents. GOOD FOR HIM!!!

I heard that on the news. I think the judge was totally correct.

This story is such a tragedy. I know I will never forget it.

OP you are in Connecticut so you probably saw more detailed coverage than we did. During the trial Nancy Grace was covering it and some of the information was so horrifying. I couldn't even watch it all. It is difficult to comprehend how someone could do this. :sad2:

Oh I didn't know this. Today is my goddaughter, Hayley's, birthday.

I'm glad the judge is putting his foot down about the cost. I would gladly pay the extra tax dollars for this scumbag to die.

Thank you to the OP for keeping attention on this critical last phase of the trial. It is noteworthy that the normally strident anti-death penalty groups that are always in complete overdrive mode at this point (i.e. going into hyper spin mode to prevent the convicted from getting that penalty) are staying completely silent on Hayes.

They know their generic arguments for compassion will fall not just on completely deaf ears, but could actually harm their larger agenda. In fact, because of the raw emotional impact of the Petit case, party colleagues of State Rep. Gary Holder-Winfield (D-New Haven) are desperately trying to get him to back off on his plans to re-introduce legislation to abolish the death penalty in CT in this session. Such a move is political suicide when over 70% of the citizens in the state want to see Hayes and Komisarjevsky executed.

ITA. One of the candidates running for the governor's office here is very anti death penalty but said that if Hayes is sentenced he will not stop the execution should he become governor. The fact is, it will be very HARD to execute Hayes if Ct. eliminates the death penalty and he knows it. :sad2: It was hard enough to execute serial killer Michael Ross and he wanted to die.

This story is just every parent's worst nightmare. I have three daughters and my husband travels a lot. When he is out of town I often wake up in the middle of the night and think of the Petit family and what happened to them. The horror they must have experienced is just unfathomable to me.

The father seems to be an amazing man from what I have seen in the statements he has made. That was a beautiful tribute to his daughter. How wonderful that he can celebrate her life; I think I would be so mean and filled with pain and focused on the evil. He is truly someone to admire.
