On August 1, 1946, President Truman signed the Fulbright Program into law, establishing the scholarships named for Sen. William J. Fulbright.

On August 1, 1966, twenty-five-year-old Charles Joseph Whitman shot and killed 15 people at the University of Texas before he was gunned down by police.

I found this on a trivia page...

"'Video Killed the Radio Star' by the Buggles was the first video to premire on MTV on August 1, 1981. The millionth video to air on MTV was 'Video Killed the Radio Star', aired on MTV February 27, 2000. It's also the 3rd most aired video in MTV history. "

:( I will never forget that day. I was a junior in high school and it terrified me that this could happen at a university. Especially that it could happen at UofT

Shannon, I think MTV's first video was "Video Killed The Radio Star" by the Buggles or something like that. Hard to belive it was that long ago. I remember that day. We were visiting friends with cable and I was HOOKED.:) Of course at first they only had a few that they showed over and over and over...
