I was very lucky and able to book an Illuminations Fireworks Cruise for New Years Eve. There will only be 5 of us and I'd really like to contact someone at Disney to find out who our Captain will be so that I may somehow invite the Captain's spouse or significant other to join us. I know it's a longshot and that they probably won't schedule the personnel for many months to come, but I'd like to try. Any suggestions on where to start?

CMs only have a two-week advance notice of what their shifts will be. With vacations scheduled around the Holidays, schedulers wouldn't know until right before your trip. And even then, Disney wouldn't release any information regarding CMs.

Not sure how you would get "word" to the CM to do so. Disney wouldn't be willing to give you any sort of information besides MAYBE a first name. I also doubt they would contact the captain themselves to do this either.

When will you be arriving for your trip?

If a few days prior to NYE you could stop by the marina and leave a note with your reservation inviting the Captain to bring a guest with him or her. you could leave your hotel / contact information in case there were any questions.

This way, Disney doesn't have to give out any info but your invitation can still get to the right person. It might even cause a few to volunteer for the shift ;)

There is no way that Disney will give you contact information for a CM - it's both illegal and unethical.

I also can't imagine that a cast member would be allowed to bring their significant other with them to work. The boat captain is a professional with a job to do. It's not a social occasion for them.

When you get there, go over to where you board a couple of days before and explain. I can't imagine this wouldn't work and it's probably the only thing that will.

What a great idea/gesture. I admit I would have never thought of that.

I agree with this. I wouldn't even consider it.

Plus,
1) Employees do not know the boat to which they are assigned, if there are several units.
2) Employees do not know names on the ressie(s) ahead of time.

This is a great idea! We will be arriving several days before NYE.

Also, I realize that Disney isn't about to give a perfect stranger the personal contact information for an employee. I am simply looking for a way to attempt to make this happen. If it can't, then it can't.

I understand this and would not be looking to get any personal information. The way I look at, the Captain wouldn't be "bringing" their significant other with them. They would be my guest. There's no reason to think that having their significant other onboard would make them any less professional. Disney may think otherwise and if that's the case I'll just have to accept that. In the meantime, I'd like to give it a shot.

A possible plan B:
Bring along a spare bottle of champagne for the Captain to share with his/her significant other whenever they Do celebrate New Years.

This is such a sweet gesture! Not sure if disney will allow the captain to bring his spouse... But I really do hope it works out!

There's every reason to think that. And if the expectation is they won't be any different (e.g. less professional) than if the spouse wasn't there, why would either the captain or spouse be interested?

I'm going to completely agree with Alesia, sorry.

While I'm sure your intentions are the best, this really strikes me as kind of "the call is coming from inside the house" territory.

I personally would not want a perfect stranger on the cruise with my family, and if I were the captain's wife, this would seem very odd to me, and no way would I even consider it.

Yet another "agree with this post" answer. I'm sorry, but this really isn't a good idea for so many reasons, most of them noted on this thread. Even if the SO is your guest, it just doesn't work.

I'd just find someone else to invite. I think I'd drop it now.

I don't think the Captain would necessarily act any differently if his significant other is on board.
But, he is a professional with a job to do and his job does not include his significant other being there.

Even though you are looking at the significant other as your guest, he/she really is not your guest any more than any other random stranger.

I don't think the boat Captain is in a tipped position (but don't know for sure). If they're not a tip position, they can't accept anything of values, so could not accept a trip or a bottle of wine. Even if it would be allowed, it puts the Captain and the significant other in a potentially very uncomfortable situation. The Captain or significant other may not want to do it, but do they do it just to avoid disappointing a customer?

yep, totally agree!

The thought of some random person being at my husbands work (and not knowing or ever having met him before) and inviting me to join them for dinner .... just plain weird. Why on earth would someone want to spend NYE with a random stranger??!
