To those change savers - when do you cash in?

I have just started over the past month seriously saving change. I always used to dig through my purse to pay by exact change, but NO MORE! I have a drawer that I have devoted to nothing but the change. And now I can't wait to actually count my loot....

SO...when do you cash in? Do you do it monthly or do you wait till right before you need it?

I would think that it depends on how fast the change adds up. Since you are using a drawer, keep an eye on it so the bottom doesn't fall out. I always wait until i need it.

I've collected change for my past trips and usually cashed them in about 1 month before leaving. I've started on my 2nd bottle of change for DW and my December 2004 trip.

I keep track of my money in savings -- breaking down each little bit I have saved up for something different in Excel. So, whenever I've got $10 or $20 rolled and I'm making a trip to the bank, I deposit it in savings and then add that amount to the appropriate savings in Excel.

I was putting it toward Vacation, but since I finally have all of the money for our late Sept. trip to WDW saved up, I'm now putting my change toward paying off a recent basement remodel.

I have a Goofy bank that I put our change in. When Goofy's full, I empty him out and head to the credit union. I put all coins (including pennies) in, so it's fun to see if the amount redeemed varies much. Surprisingly it doesn't. I usually empty him every five weeks and get $43 - $45. I have been doing this for the past 3 WDW trips. It's amazing how quickly it adds up and how little I miss the coins.

I cash in about 2 weeks before our trip. This gives me 2 weeks to then save change for toll roads and laundry. Right now I have a 9" Fred Flintstone bank full of pennies, another short Fred bank about 1/5 full of pennies, a Donald Duck bank 3/4 full of dimes and nickels and a Coke bottle that has paper dollars, coin dollars, and quarters that is about 1/2 full. I must admit I do feel a bit conspicuous when I lug in all that change but hey I only do it once a year and I do have to drive 50 miles to go to the main office of my bank so as to use the coin counting machine.

*Looking around for BunBunzDad* Wonder if I'm supposed to tip the teller for dumping all my change into the machine to be counted.

We opened a savings account just for our vacation savings. I usually cash our change in about once a month and deposit it into this account. I really like seeing it build over the months leading up to our trip.

I count and wrap my coins weekly but I don't cash them in until I need them (ie to pay for room deposit or park passes). I find that depositing my change without it being spent already for something only makes it easier to spend it on something else other than my vacation.

I have a container in my kitchen that I save our change in. I roll the change on a rainy day, usually like my change jar to be at least half way filled. I roll my change and sell it to the bank for greens.

My next trip is to the disney store to buy disney dollars!! This is a fun thing for the whole family. Usually in a year we take 800 to 1000 dollars in disney dollars. my 5 year old daughter calls it mickey money.

already have 400 saved for my next trip!!!

What do you do with partial rolls? I was rolling my change today, and ive got 3/4 a roll of nickles, scrounged around, and cannot find more. Do you just not cash that in, or how does the bank deal with it?

I waited until a week before our final payment was due. We had about $120 in change, and it was quite a challenge lugging it to the bank! (I'm a weakling) I think from now on, I'll try to take it in every other month or so.

I roll all of our change about 2 weeks before our trip. If I rolled it up any earlier, I'm sure that we would find other ways to spend it. It is always a really nice surprise to see how much we have saved!!

Since we go so much, 6 to 10 times a year, we don't collect alot at a time anymore. It still collects quickly, and it really amazes my 10yo son who I'm training in budgetting!

We cash out the day of the trip, using the change for tolls and laundry, and most of it goes to the little extras my son wants. We keep it in a can in my top dresser drawer and both of us do the deposits!

I usually go into rolling mode about once every two weeks. Our closest Disney Store is about an hour away, so whenever I'm heading over to that state (yes, it's in a different state) to do shopping, I take them to the bank with my dollar bills, switch them out for larger bills, then immediately transfer them into Disney Dollars.

(Otherwise, we would see the money in our account and want to spend it!!)

I have an old jar from a 14.5 oz. Yankee Candle in my kitchen. Whenever DH or I have spare change, we throw it in the jar. When the jar is full, I roll it. We usually have about $100, give or take a few bucks. However, because of the nasty looks we get at the bank when we show up with our rolled change (I'm not kidding - some bank tellers have refused to take it), I think we'll take it in every $20-$30 from now on. It adds up quick - especially since DH leaves change everywhere (the kitchen table, on top of the clock in the bedroom, in the drink holder in the car, the washing machine, etc...)
