To the parents of teens...I am fed up with you!!

I am consistenly amazed that some want to tell others what is right or wrong for their child.

For the record:

  • I have 2 daughters ages 8 & 13
  • Both girls have tv's with DVD players
  • Both girls have laptop computers
  • Both girls have cell phones
  • both girls have 4 wheel ATV's

And yes, they both will get a new car when they turn 16.

I will slip into my flame suit now.

Boo's Mom: My communication with my son is just fine, thank you. He knows and understands he will not be having a TV, DVD, TIVO, telephone, computer in his room. He's not happy about it, but too bad. I've explained to him that we will not make the same BAD choices that other parents make!

However, my husband and I talk about the lack of common sense that so many parents, like you, show when they give these things to their kids. It's something that I completely disagree with, and yes, I do think these parents are lazy!!

I'm interested to hear how you think the lack of these things is going to make your son a better person?

Oh, it was RESEARCH.

Excuse my explanations, I thought someone had an opinion without all the "subtleties of the facts" as it were (as often happens when children tell parents about "everybody else").

Wow! The DIS is an amazing example of "pack mentality" that happens in middle schools. I've seen it happen here before, but thought I'd try it and see. Here's what happens:

1)Post something controversial...This can be any topic-I picked child rearing, but I could have chosen any other topic.

2) Take a really strong, controverisal stance on it.

3) Watch the "holier than thou" Disers call the OP (me, in this case) call names and accuse the OP of being judgemental, while at the same time tearing that person literally apart.

4) Then patting themselves on the back because even though they have engaged in this group attack, they are "better" than the OP.

I have to laugh, because this happens all the time in middle school, but it happens here on the DIS too. I could even have predicted that some poor soul would take the time to look up old threads and attack those too. (Of course, that person would never, ever be judgemental. They just had the time to do all that research so that others in the community could join in the group attack. It's an amazing study of human nature that I see happen all the time on the DIS. I really don't care what teenager has a TV in their room or calls who on the cell phone. However, I could write a thesis on the human behavior witnessed here today. It's amazing!

(But, for those that joined in the attack and picking apart, I'm glad you're not judgemental!!)

So basically you were just doing an experiment and the DIS members were Guinea pigs? Hmmm, sounds like a very mature project to undertake--something that I would expect a middle school girl capable of. Amazing!

For the record, I don't give a rat's rear if your son (if indeed you do have a son) has a TV in his room, a computer, or a cell phone. I will make my parenting decisions independent of what you or any other parent decides to do. Because yes, in spite of my gender, I do have the balls to stand up to my kids.

And yes, my kids, except for my 6yo, so have cell phones. Was a great decision! :thumbsup2

Chick, you should really seek help.

You know, there was a thread a while back where a poster told about her child staining a new sofa, or something along those lines. The responses that she received were not in agreement with the way that she handled the problem. So, the poster later returned to the thread to disclose that she was actually conducting a "study/research" for a psych class. :teeth: :teeth:

Anyway, I wonder if Disteach is that same poster. :scratchin :scratchin All that "research" must get tiring! ;) :teeth:

Not that I agree with her anyway.... nor really disagree.

It really doesn't boil down to whether you agree with her or not. If you've got the same rules as she does in your own house, that's your right. Berating others for something you perceive to be wrong however is totally uncalled for and something I hope no one agrees with. Well, as long as the parent's rules don't have a conflict of interest with the laws of our nation.

Personally, I don't agree with the OP, but I fully support her right to decide what's best for her family. I don't think it's asking to much to expect that support to be returned.

Exactly- and now the OP will sit back with her computer off and pat HERSELF on the back because she just knew how this so-called experiment would go. She is, of course, above all of this.

Yeah. I'm sure everyone is buying this experiment story. :rotfl:

And how sad is it if you really have nothing better to do than to :stir: on an internet chat board?

There was also a thread about someone having a Plasma TV in her living room where she'd show birth movies (I think it was birth movies--something really bizarre). Maybe it was the same thread that you are thinking of and the husband ate in the living room and got the couch dirty. It was so strange I can't remember that convoluted story. Yeah, what an "experiment". :lmao:

I usually claim "research" for the stuff I say after one too many tequila shots too.

I didn't go searching thru her past posts, but it seems she does have a son. While not really out of the question, not too many parents seek further education as this stage in the game.

I don't really believe this is an experiment.

Bridget~ Hey!   Girl, where have you been? :cool1: Good to "see" you!

I actually don't think she was going to do an experiment but i think we've now given the lazy person's way to pick a topic for your kids next science fair project. :thumbsup2

um..I respectfully disagree...just your op begs to differ!

I also work in a middle school and I have seen things like this happen....when someone makes an absolutely ridiculous statement that is meant to offend a large number of people in a very short amount of time. If your op had been done differently I might have agreed that I don't believe in putting tvs in kids rooms...but that only applies to my own family.

I'll be sure to ask you for advice next time I go looking to give my kid something that I'm not sure you would approve of!!!

tara

I can only strive to be as perfect as the OP.
I can't imagine believing myself to be so above everyone else in the world. It must be either really exhausting or boring up on that pedestal! :rotfl2:

Thanks to everyone else for the laughs today--it's nice to see some people aren't so anal or rigid in their parenting beliefs.

Rrrrita!!! I've been busy playing MarioKart with the kids in their bedroom. Man, it is addictive!
