Hi. We visited WDW last yr (8/28-9/3) and stay at CSR. It was totally worth it to us due to the EE (we have 6 yr old twin dd's). This year we are visiting Atlanta for our family vaca. and are going to surprise them & go to WDW for just 3 days, but now I'm not sure whether it's worth it to stay on the property or off. We took total advantage of EE and it worked great for us. Now I just don't see what the advantage of staying on the property would be this time. It seems we can still get shuttles from off site lodging and some of those places would include meals (that family pkg @ Holdiay Inn). Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks,Duck

To me the deciding facters would be 1 - time of year you are going - if it is a busier time of year there would be time advantage to staying onsite, 2 -cost facter - would saving $$ make up to you the lost time driving or waiting on a shuttle to the parks would take, 3- do you plan to go back to your room for a break in the middle of the day, if you don't, off site would work ok. It's been years since we stayed offsite, but with traffic getting worse every year (and road construction) I could see how off site (unless you are just outside the park) could make a huge difference in time gettin to the park.
Whatever you decide , have a great time:)

Atlanta; hope you have a wonderful time while you are down visiting here. As far as WDW goes, since you are going for a three day visit (less than a week) and thinking about staying offsite, I can personally reccommend it due to having vacationed in this manner for years while in town. We have always thoroughly enjoyed our off-property visits for several reasons such as more space, amenities, relaxation, and saving money for other things such as food/souvenirs or miscellaneous.

If you will have your own car especially while in Orlando getting around is extremely easy as there are many quality hotels with complimentary breakfast buffets like you mentioned that are right next door to the parks within easy reach in no more than a 5 minute drive. I have found it very convenient in getting to and from parks back at the hotel within a matter of minutes. I assume you are specifically refering to Holiday Inn Family Suites in your post; if so there have been many awesome reviews from families who were guests at this property (and others) with many returning repeatedly on the Orlando Hotels and Attractions Board.

In the case you don't have access to a personal vehicle while down on vacation, most hotels do in fact offer the shuttle bus transportation but their schedules differ; such as there may be diverse pickup/drop off times for a particular park on certain given days. So, you will have to definitely be sure and plan your park visits around these times if your family opts to use the shuttle at all. We always usually drive around in our car in going to the parks, shopping, eating out, etc. but used the shuttle bus on one occasion before and it was a pleasant experience.

I hope this helps some; if possible I will try and answer more indepth questions if you have any and would like to send a pm.

Deena said alot of the good reasons, already for staying off-site. I particularly like staying near Downtown Disney when we do off-site. Having access to a near-by mall the other way doesn't hurt, either. There are plenty of eating places in that mall that we enjoy and you have a supermarket there even though it's high priced. If you go the other way towards Kissimee then getting on Hwy 192 is a no brainer to get to Disney, as well. We are not in our rooms very much except to sleep. I'm there to do the parks, not the resorts. By the time we are done with our day I probably could sleep in the parking lot; so, it's not a plus for me to stay at the very best of the best considering what you have to pay for the honor.

When we bring our grandchildren I love getting a condo or renting a house. Everyone can have their own space. I know you can do the same at Disney but we do it for a 1/3 or 1/2 the cost depending on the time of year. I rather spend the money saved for a nicer meal or souvenirs or doing something extra like Disney miniature golf, Wonder Werks, etc. By saving on the higher resort costs at Disney it has allowed us to extend our visit by a few days which is the best perk of all. Obviously, you have to have the time to do it.

There is a different slant on staying at Disney property since
9-11-02. It's alot more on security with the cars as you get into each resort for checking. This is especially so at the value resorts. I'm not sure if this has lightened up but last October this probably caused an extra 1/2 hour each day; so, staying off site might have been a real time saver at that time. Supposedly, there were threats to Disney World; so, there were extra precautions taken. We always do the car thing even on-site. I don't want to be on a crowded bus or monorail, etc. I don't find that to be fun at the end of a day.

With all that said I would make a few exceptions to the rule. If you get All-Stars for $49 a night I might still stay on Disney. We did it for that rate but we still had EE. The other time it would be better to stay at Disney is if there was alot of construction going on all over off property. A couple of years back Hwy 192 was a mess. It probably tripled the time to commute. The answer there though would be go in a different direction and you could still stay off-site. Fortunately, I've never seen it bad in every direction at the same time.

If it were my honeymoon or 25th anniversary which is coming up for me then I would opt for a Disney Deluxe resort regardless of early entry. Those events put a different slant to it all. Another time I would do it would be for Christmastime but I may stay at a moderate or value resort. Also, if it were my first time I think staying on site might be acceptable but again at the value resorts. Now, if money is no object then by all means stay at the best of Disney resorts. I'm not fortunate enough to take any vacation without looking at the bottom line. I pride myself on getting the best value possible for what we like and for what we get out of it.

This debate of staying on or off has been going on for a very long time even when EE was still available. The character bus will never be a reason for me to stay at a Disney resort but you should know this is what has taken the place of EE.

Finally, I've done so well with economizing it has allowed us to take multiple trips per year to Disney. I rather go twice and stay so so then to go once and stay at the best. Everyone has choices. I'm not a resort person; I'm a park person. It's that simple.

I guess it always comes down to what people can afford.

I prefer the benefit of Disney's transportation. The buses leave you close to the gates, come by often, are very nice and cool, and the resorts are safe.

Having stayed offsite as well, I acknowledge the fact that you save money. I also acknowledge the fact that Universal offers more perks to their resort guests and many people may not think it is a great deal to be trated like anyone else who stays offsite.

wdw.guest.communications@wda.disney.com Let them hear from you!

But if worse comes to worst, staying offsite still beats staying at home!

To me staying on site is everything...You do not get the Disney Magic all in your stay if you stay outside the park... I love staying on - site and i really reccomend it to you.

We found a great way to bring the Disney Magic into our off site trip. Our car had a CD player in it and we played Disney CDs all the while we were in the car. It was great!

I just wanted to thank everyone for the great replies. We're still thinking! Thanks again!

Onsite is definitely worth it, especially since you will only be there a couple of days. It will help with the whole Disney feel, and even though you may stay offsite and it could be just as close as one of the offsite resorts, it could take you quite a while to travel to and from the parks. Also consider, you will be paying to park at the parks, and if you choose to take a break in the middle of the day, it is just not anywhere near as convenient.

If you are going between April 21- June 22 there is a post card that was sent out with a code for $100 off a deluxe resort... the featured one was AKL. If you would like the code, please email me, and then ask if you would need the postcard on checkin, as it didn't say whether or not you would.

The shorter the stay, the more worth it it is to stay immersed in the MAGIC!!!
