To splurge or not to splurge?

Lets say you'd been saving up for a trip for a while. It had been your intention from the very beginning to splurge and treat yourself. So you save, and you reach your goal. Now, however, you kind of think to yourself "this is a LOT of money.... I could have fun spending half this much!"

Would you :cool1: splurge :cool1: and go all out or would you do the mature thing and treat yourself :teacher: sensibly :teacher:.

Its not a trip to disney, but in Disney terms it would be the equivalent of staying at a mod or at the Grand Floridian. (and a mod would still be a treat because I would normally be staying at a budget place because I like to pinch them pennies!)

Just curious. I'm kind of leaning towards the sensible choice, but I'm floored by how many people say SPLURGE!

If I had a nickel for every person who had that kind of a reaction to my question, I could splurge for twice as long! :lmao:

I am the only one on the planet who wants to be sensible!

I'm a practical gal myself. However the older I get the better I have become at treating myself to things that I really like. For instance i bought a pair of Keen shoes...cost me almost $100. All the shoes in my closet together didn't cost that much! (Granted there's only 5 pairs or so) The upshot is I love these shoes. Worth every penny.
I just got my hair straightened too.....again more money than I normally would spend on myself.
I am still practical in lots of ways. I am thrifty when it comes to clothes, and I don't like souvenirs unless it's something I'll actually use.

I guess I'm saying, splunge on what you love and let yourself be practical for the things that really aren't important to you. Maybe splurge on the hotel but go moderate on the dining out, or splurge on the food and forget the cheap souvenirs.

Rosie, that's what I keep telling myself... just treat yourself!. The Catch-22 is that the trip itself is a bit of a splurge... so its kind of like me asking myself "Do I want to SPLURGE splurge or just splurge? :lmao:

I dunno... I think maybe what I really want is for someone to tell me "Oh for pete's sake... just buy your ticket already! Sheesh!"

Oh for pete's sake... just buy your ticket already! Sheesh!

question -

if you just splurged and didnt "splurge splurge" then could you splurge twice?
if yes then 2 splurges outrank a splurge splurge every time.

if you couldnt do two splurge trips then I would splurge splurge - life is toooo short!!!

whatever you decide...have fun!!!

(ps im naturally careful with money but am SPLURGE SPLURGING SOOOOOO bad this year for our wedding etc that i know exactly where you are coming from!! - it goes against the grain!!)

now ive got splurge all over myself!!!

I caught your title and had to respond..

another practical gal here. no spoiling or splurging in the day to day...

but, vacations are memory makers, moments you never get back, no one ever gets a "do-over" on a vacation. If it's a "once in a lifetime" or even a "once in a decade" kind of thing...SPLURGE SPLURGE! If it's a weekend getaway that you could do once or twice a year, just splurge!

IMO, I'd splurge.

Although my partner and I are very sensible when it comes to money, although after the 52% paper drop in our investments last year we are investing more now to make up for it so we have less money to splurge with, we intentionally splurge on vacation every year.

We've stayed at the Grand Floridian and Polynesian among other places. We've upgarded to a suite on a cruise and typically rent higher end luxury vehicles on vacation (ie. H2, Escalade, etc.). After we pay our bills and invest based on our financial decision for the year, the rest of the money is play money and although you don't need money to make lasting memories sometimes spending the money on an experience is worth every cent.

Example, my bestfriend graduated medical school. I tossed around what to get her, from simple things, to extravagant. I finally settled on taking her to Philadelphia, all expense paid with dinner at Morimotos.

We drove down from Syracuse to Philadelphia, stayed at the Loews Philadelphia in a VIP room, and then went to dinner at Morimotos. When we arrived I asked to be sat at the sushi bar (we've been before so we knew the routine) and proceeded to order an off-menu priced Omakase (tasting menu) with paired drinks (not just wine, but all sorts of alcholic goodness).

Words cannot explain how amazing the meal was. From a dish centered around mushrooms, capped with the most expensive mushroom in the world (note, truffles are not the most expensive mushroom, they are the most expensive fungus, but there is a difference), to the master chef himself, coming to our side of the sushi bar, opening our salt encrusted sweet fish and personally pulling each white flaky piece of meat from the tiny bones and demonstrating the proper way to eat it, the meal was flawless.

The trip was VERY expensive to say the least, but if you ask my bestfriend what was the best gift she ever received, the trip is #1. I could have just bought her a gift from the mall, but I decided to splurge and show her an experience she will never forget!

Let me be sure I understand. You've *saved* all the money you need for your splurge? None of the splurge will be on credit cards?

If the answer to both of those questions is "YES," then it's not so much a splurge as it is an earned privilege and you should GO FOR IT!!!!! :goodvibes

It's not irresponsible to save and spend on something that's important to you. You worked hard for that payoff. Take away the payoff and you take away the motivation to work at all. imho. :wizard:

Another vote for the splurge!

For me, well us, we work hard all year long. When it comes to vacations, all bets are off!

I think if you have saved towards a goal you should reward yourself. Life is unpredictable. You don't want to look back and think to yourself "I wish I would have splurged." ;)

you should - Disney always gives you what you pay for and it is always a great memory to have... When all is said and done all we have are our memories and friends!
Just Do It

OK, here's my "ultimate test." On the day that you die, do you want to look back over the course of your life and say with great pleasure, "Ah yes, I was practical and did not splurge even when I could," or do you want to say with great pleasure, "Ah yes, that splurge was glorious and gave me great memories for a lifetime?"

S'up to you. ::yes:: If you don't find the splurge something that will give you great pleasure, then of course don't do it!

However, it could be, deep down, you are asking for "permission" to splurge but if that is the case, our "permission" won't help. You need to allow yourself to have an all out, no hold's barred, splash out or the splurge won't work its magic.

Good luck to you in your decision!

I am with Jim. For me--two smaller splurges are always better than one big splurge. So, if you can take two trips you would really enjoy by going with the "mod" hotel--that is what I would do. But, if it is one trip no matter what and you have all the money saved--then buy the tickets already--sheesh!

Go for it.
:thumbsup2
Splurge your brains out!

Maybe you can out spend jlewisinsyr. :upsidedow
