To sing or not to sing

i would much rather the audience sing it, or a local school or community chorus, or a military chorus (like the air force tops in blue that sang back-up for whoever that was that sang america the beautiful), or really anyone other than a celebrity entertainer. The national anthem is not about entertainment, and unfortunately that's all some celebrities know how to do.

the poster hit it right on the head. It's not about what's being said .... And again that's all these celebrities know how to do. Were using it for entertainment purpose only.

It's over done. Look around you the next time you go to a ball game. Most people don't pay attention. It's over done.what if disney wanted to play it when they opened the parks every morning..i don't think it will go over.

No around here, amazingly, people here still respect the National Anthem.

I hope they continue, but I think the last 4 Super Bowls have show how untalented some of the young best selling singers are these days.

I guess we're bad Americans here. We don't pay attention, only stand grudgingly and don't remove our hats. Doesn't mean we hate our country or what it stands for, just don't think it has to be done at every single event you go to. You can love your country without severely overusing the national anthem.

I'm curious...when do you think the anthem should be sung? Not flaming at all - I respect that others have different opinions. I also don't believe that someone's patriotism can be judged by whether they believe the anthem belongs being sung at any given event, although I do think it is incredibly disrespectful not to remove one's hat.

About the only time I ever get to hear it is at sporting events, so if that was dropped I'd just about never hear it sung at all. Personally I love hearing it and wish it was sung more often.

with the exception of one very negative comment, there have been some great comments on how they feel about our National Anthem. it's nice to be able to discuss something without people going off the deep end.

oh my sing it a rope drop. If disney does .. Oh my.

I'd love it, one of the nicest moments we had on our last trip was sitting and watching the Flag Ceremony at MK. It was very moving. My DH and DGpa, both veterans, really enjoyed it and spent a good hour talking with the honored vet of the day. It was a beautiful thing. What is more patriotic then the National Anthem and Mickey Mouse? (and baseball of course!)

To each his own, but I hope they never do away with the national Anthem I sing it proudly along with my kids, and they'd never dream of being disrespectful during it. Not cause they are perfect kids, far from it, but because they know what they dad and many other family members went though and that song honors them.

I do agree I'd like to see it not be a celebrity thing, good or bad. I love at our Minor League games when the kids from local school groups sing. That gives me chills.

Sick of singing the national anthem???? Are you sick of being free too?

LOL, a bit dramatic don'tcha think. How is liking or disliking a song in any way connected to freedom? by that analysis if you don't like hot dogs or John Wayne or George Washington, you don't like freedom either.

Yeah, I don't care either way. It's a sporting event. I don't equate patriotism with professional athletics so apparently I'm a terrible American or something. If it is sung, great. If not, I probably wouldn't notice.

Flame away.

Exactly, if I had a buck for every one who ignores the national athem at sporting events I'd be a rich cookie. and for a song that is supposedly so patriotic, I quizzed a entire bunch of people and most of them flubbed up the words.

i believe in one language. In the U.S. Sung half in english then spanish wouldn't sit well. One language one country.

Canada has two official languages, so our national anthem is sung in both. Luckily, your belief in it has absolutely no bearing on how my country operates, and I am proud of of my country and both the languages we speak. :snooty:

it's over used at sporting events. and sung by people who shouldn't be singing it. another poster suggested play it don't sing it might be the way to go. just because you feel its over used doesn't mean you don't love your country.

I believe the National Anthem should be sung or played at the start of sporting events and it would be nice at rope drop, too. However, it should be sung or played only by someone or a band who can do properly. When some superstar sings it badly, and most do, it's a huge disgrace to our country. Yes, it's a difficult song to sing, but if you can't do it right, don't do it. It's sad that we've gotten so caught up with celebrities that we have lowered our standards.

GETTING RID OF HIGH PROFILE SINGERS MIGHT BE A STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION.

The tradition of singing The Star Spangled Banner at sporting events in the United States dates back to World War I. During World World I, baseball games began to include patriotic displays like military formation marching, etc.

The Star Spangled Banner was first played in the 1918 World Series. In Chicago, it was played during the 7th Inning Stretch. Most of the audience was already standing (for the stretch) and sang along. When the series moved on to Boston, the song started being played at the beginning of the game instead.

After that, the song was played during special occasions, like opening day. The Star Spangled Banner wasn't even the national anthem at this point (that happened in 1931).

With the start of World War II, it became a tradition to play the song at the start of each baseball game. By this time, the technology available allowed the anthem to be played via recording.

I don't know when that tradition made it's way to other sports in the United States. Probably around the same time.
