I know that July can be quite rainy in Florida, but I was wondering if ponchos are really necessary. We'll be staying at the CBR from July 19-26 and sure, we (myself, DH, DS 10, & DD 7) will get wet, but isn't that preferable to "steaming" in a hot, plastic poncho? I was thinking that it might actually be nice to be cooled off by a rain shower or two. Does anyone else agree or am I just nuts?

The problem is that when you go into a ride or restaurant or store, they have the AC cranked up like it's a sunny day. If your skin is wet, you can get really cold.

Count on rain every afternoon in July. Holly and I once went to MK just as an afternoon shower was starting. As people scrambled from the downpour, we strolled down Main Street without a poncho or anything. By the time we reached the Hub, we were drenched to our unmentionables. Going on rides was uncomfortable as the AC is always set very high during summer. We were wet for hours.

I recommend a poncho. You might be refreshed for a little while, but once the rain stops and the heat and humidity return, you'll be miserable.

I also think the cheap $1 ponchos stick to you more than the Disney ones. We use the Disney ones in the rain and they are fine.

You definitly should at least carry them with you. Any shower in July seems to turn into a downpour, and getting soaked like that, in theory, seems nice, but in reality just makes your clothes stick to you and can distract from the experience.

Wet shorts make for uncomfortable walking. I actually buy the 1$ cheepies. I don`t really care if they stick to me as long as they keep me/ my back pack dry. Then I can toss it and not have to feel bad about it.

Bring them.

Yes it can rain, well no pour. I have used them in the summer & was thankful I did.

Our last trip it poured on our first morning but luckily we were at the MK so the rides were close to one another so we didn't poncho it (but we covered the stroller with it).

On our last day we were on the monorail on the way to EPCOT & the cloud we saw ended up being pouring rain that didn't stop. We walked, well ran from the monorail station to The Land, ate there & then waited a bit but the rain never stopped. We were so lucky to have them this way we wouldn't be soaked.

And believe me these quick showers will cool you off but they will leave you soaked & your clothes will not dry if it is later in the evening & do you really want to sit in an air-conditioned ride soaked to the bone?

Oh & I am going the same exact dates as you, but I am staying at the Poly, my plane arrives around 2:30 & we have PS at Chef Mickey's for 5.

And the next morning we will be eating with Cindy at 8:15 & I am still trying to figure out if I should make PS for the Crystal Palace for Sunday or Monday.

I used to NEVER carry a poncho...until last September :umbrella: . We unloaded from the bus on the way to CRT and it just started - out of no where - pouring down rain. I cannot even describe how hard it was raining. We waited a few minutes thinking it would pass, but had to head into it, as our PS time was very close! We ran through 'floods' and every inch of ALL EIGHT OF US was soaked! We even went into the ladies room and RUNG our clothes out....I have NEVER been so wet! :sad2: Needless to say our CRT was cold and wet and DD was MISERABLE and COLD and IRRITABLE... :cold: but we managed and afterwards we went next door to Tinkerbell's and bought DD a new outfit! Mom just managed - of course :rolleyes1 ...

We got rained on quite a bit a little over a week ago and were glad we had ponchos. We got them 2/$1 at the dollar store and they held up to many ons and offs and tucking into and pulling out of the backpack. Most of the lines are covered, so you can take them off and just throw them back on when you go back into the elements. They take up so little space that it seems silly not to at least bring them. Better to have them and not need them than the other way around.

Bottom line: They weigh about 6 oz. each and you'll be much more comfortable after the rain then if you don't have one. If you want to cool down go inside one of the indoor shops for 10 minutes.

Thanks everyone for such quick replies! I didn't even think about the cold AC in stores, restaurants, and indoor rides. I guess I'll just tote them along just in case -- lucky me, though, I have Children's Place camouflage ones for my DD & DS. His is army green, hers is pink! I'll check some local dollar stores and Target, Walmart, etc. for adult size ones. Incidentally, does anyone know how much they cost at WDW?

Thanks again!

Just noticed this week that Target had ponchos in the dollar section. I'm assuming they are adult size. Don't know how much they cost at WDW, but am guessing way more than $1.

I don't do ponchos. I'll be going in July too and I think that the rain does feel good. Plus it's so hot that everything dries up pretty quick.

To me a poncho would be one more thing to lug around. I don't like to carry anything in the parks. DH usually has cargo pockets for the camera and wallet and I don't carry anything!

What color are the ponchos that are sold at WDW? If I buy them before I get there, I'd like to make sure I buy a different color so we can make each other out in a crowd better.

Like everyone has said, DEFINATELY have the ponchos! Wet clothes just make you miserable. The Disney ponchos are not the kind that stick to you and we've really never gotten all hot feeling in them either. As soon as the rain stops and the sun comes out, you just take them off and you're still nice and dry (except for your feet!).

On a related note, how does everyone keep their cameras (video, digital, 35mm, or one-time-use) DRY when it rains or even on a wet ride like Splash Mountain or KRR in AK? Ideas anyone?

I would have to agree with the comment about the cheapies sticking to you more. I think that the Disney ones definately look to be of better quality, less sticky, and the hoods seem to stay up better.

That being said I wore my Target $1 poncho for most of the first five days of our trip. It beat being wet. I don't like sitting in wet clothes. A couple of times I didn't put on my poncho, and then later when I was wet and miserable I wished I had.

Now my kids and dh didn't wear theirs as much as mine. They thought that the warm Florida rain felt good. :flower:

When it rains it POURS down here. When you say you want to cool off a little bit in the rain, does that mean you wouldn't mind getting drenched?? Cuz you most probably will. Also, if you plan on entering a ride, gft shop, or restaurant after you've been rained on you'll definitely freeze! Maybe even catch a cold or something. Anyway, my vote is for the poncho. Trust me, you'll still end up getting wet with the ponchos on as well...but at least you won't freeze evreywhere you go! :cold:

Definitely poncho. Much safer than an umbrella, but not as cool as the sun. :sunny:
