To Infinity and The Contemporary!

We'll see about the BOBer trip report - I think there are a lot more experienced people around to handle that one. Although I do plan to keep an eye on Mikey (and a camera ready ;) ) I'm sure he will do something worthy of the Dumbotron! (I've heard that Cass and Joanne know how to get pictures displayed up there ;) )

mikey WILL be keeping a low profile this cruise.
at least thats the plan.:rolleyes1
but if i hear anything about a planned pillowfight..........:cloud9:

Thanks, Nancy! I can't believe that a seasoned Disney veteran like you has never been! You gave away free tickets?

I would have loved to seen a pregnant lady singing for her release. Why didn't you pretend to go into labor? :lmao:

Yet another reason why we need you on the B.O.B. trivia team!

Yup, gave them away. Years ago there was a Disney club that I belonged to but can't recall the name of it anymore. From what I was told, there are only 1000 members and they were chosen randomly. Every year we were sent passes to various attractions. As long as someone used my passes, we remained in the club. It would be anything from free coffee mugs to dinners for 4 at a restaurant of our choice in EPCOT!! The very last year this club was in existence we received 5 different passes. We got a free dinner for 4 in the UK in EPCOT and prime seats for the fireworks afterwards, tickets for 4 for the underground tour of the MK, tickets for 4 for the Polynesian Luau, preferred seating for the Electrical Light parade at MK, and tickets for 4 for the Revue.

We hit the Motherlode that year!!!:worship:

Kristin became friends with a little girl at the pool at our hotel and told us that their daddy died 6 months before and that this trip was a little getaway gift from the mom's sister. The family never left the hotel and shared sandwiches for lunch. The mom used the same coffee cup all week from the hotel restaurant and ate very little. I felt bad for them and gave them the tickets. They were thrilled!! :yay: It made me feel good. :cutie:

I've never heard of anything like this 'club' before - lucky you! We used to have something called the Magic Kingdom Club but I don't remember it having any perks like that!

What a great story about how you came to give your tickets away! Maybe they will come back to you when you last expect it! ;)

Hiya Everybody!

Tuesday was Animal Kingdom day! We started by having a continental breakfast in the Atrium Club. There was cereal, croissants, danish, Krispy Kreme glazed donuts plus juice and even a fancy schmancy cappuccino machine (see Frank for directions). It was really nice to be able to get up and have breakfast whenever we wanted. I have to admit, it was also nice having the rental car and not having to wait for the buses!

The Wildlife Discovery Tour is a private safari offered exclusively to concierge guests. The tour is offered twice a day, at 10 AM and 1 PM, and is limited to 14 guests. There is a fee, but I don't remember how much.

We headed over to the Animal Kingdom to meet up with our tour group at the Mombasa Marketplace. We met our tour driver, Suzanne, and it wasn't long before we met the other 7 members of our tour group: a family of 5 and another couple (Tinkerbell was a stowaway!). We headed through a gate near the entrance to the safari (b/t/w no pictures backstage!) and met up with our Animal Handler Tour Guide, Angela. We were shown to a small bus, similar to an airport shuttle. Luckily, there were only 9 of us, so we had plenty of room to move around.

While we were heading for the savannah, Angela gave us some background. She pointed out the outer fence which curved outward to keep the local 'freeloader' animals out! She said that had an especially difficult time keeping the local bobcats out. The inside fences curved inward to keep the Animal Kingdom animals in.

Angela also told us that she was one of the original 11 animal handlers hired at the Animal Kingdom. We found out later that she works with the rhinos.

We passed a few animal barns (more on that later) and made our way onto the savannah. We moved to a place where Suzanne could stop the bus so we could get some non-bouncy pictures of the giraffes:

We were just off the path of the regular safari trucks:

DSCN1057.jpg

After a few minutes we pulled into the regular safari truck path to move to our next viewing spot. Along the way, Angela told us lots of 'secret' information:

Most of the animals sleep in barns at night.

Each type of animal had it's own sound or 'dinner bell' to return to the barn.

The dinner bells can be used in an emergency to call the animals back to the barn.

All of the animals, except the birds, have names.

Most of the animals know to return to the barn when the safari vehicles stop running!

Some animals sleep on the savannah, mostly birds and the Thompson gazelles.

All of the animals get treats - for some it's fruit, others like to have apple juice sprayed in their mouths.

The hippos needed to lose some weight so they were put on a training program: they went into a pond and then a trainer would call them to another pond. When they got to the next pond, a trainer would call them back to the first pond. Hippo aerobics!

Three of the elderly wart hogs are given massages and hot compresses to make their arthritis feel better. Angela said 'we take good care of our little piggies!'

We pulled over near the elephants next and Angela told us about their community:

DSCN1066.jpg

DSCN1068.jpg

Angela and Suzanne also had some animal parts for us to pass around: hair from an elephant's tail, horns, antlers even some giraffe poop:

DSCN1061.jpg

Tink was having a blast!

DSCN1051.jpg

We moved back onto the savannah and we spotted Angela's rhinos (she was so proud!):

DSCN1075.jpg

Suzanne stopped the truck again, just past the lions and we saw more animals:

DSCN1077.jpg

It was just about this time that I noticed that one of the kids had his head at the window and was throwing up! Apparently, he had gotten car sick. His mom was holding him up to the window, because they are not allowed to open the bus door while out on the savannah. Fortunately, Suzanne had a bunch of small towels and they were able to clean him up. Suzanne was on the radio and someone was going to come out to the bus but his parents said he was OK. Needless to say, this cut the safari short (just by 10 minutes or so), since the next part of the trip was supposed to be over some bouncy terrain. His parents felt really bad and kept apologizing and we kept telling then it was OK.

When we got back to the backstage area, Angela gave us all Conservation Hero buttons, since part of the fee for our Safari was donated to the Disney Wildlife Fund. We were also given Fast Passes for the regular safari that could be used anytime that day.

We thanked Angela and said good bye, and she was happy to pose for a picture with Tink:

We really enjoyed our private safari! Now we were headed off to enjoy the rest of the Animal Kingdom!

I'm a little behind cus I have been sick  :rolleyes1

Nancy, what a great thing you did for that family! :goodvibes
HDD is not my thing, but maybe we will do it when Kira is older

Sorry that you're still not feeling well Cass

The Contemporary was very cool! I'll be talking about some of the other unusual aspects of it in upcoming reports :thumbsup2

Nancy is definitely a sweetie! :cutie: :cutie: :cutie:

The safari was fantastic! Gave us a chance to ask questions along the way which you can't do on the 'big' safari. I thought the hippo story was hysterical! What is the world coming too when hippos have to lose weight - guess I don't feel so bad now!

We did feel REALLY bad for the family with the sick kid, especially since they kept apologizing even though we told them we understood. The kid's younger brother started to look like he was going to heave, but our quick thinking driver, Suzanne, distracted him by showing him an eland antler (or is it a horn? ) until he forgot about it! :lmao: Good job Suzanne!:thumbsup2

I've never heard of anything like this 'club' before - lucky you! We used to have something called the Magic Kingdom Club but I don't remember it having any perks like that!

We were also members of the Magic Kingdom Club. For some reason I think this other club was called "The Inner Circle" or something like that. I believe the last year in existence was 1997 or 1998. I called an 800 number because I couldn't find my membership card and they said not to worry because this club was done that year. The lady told me that they sent out tons of coupons and was curious as to which one's we got. When I told her she was floored because usually a guest will only get one of those "good" coupons and then some other smaller ones. I received every one of the "good" coupons.

Sure do miss that club. :sad1:

The safari looked good Kathy. We did a safari down in Busch Gardens and loved every minute.

Never heard of it but it sounds great!

I picture them wearing tutu's (I know I spelled that wrong) and riding tricylces around. :lmao:

Isn't that Fantasia?

I believe it's the Dance of the Hours from Fantasia. But I don't think the trainers made them wear tutus - I'm sure it was already humiliating enough that they were hippos and they had to go on a diet! :lmao:

We loved it!

After our fabulous semi-private safari, we left the backstage area and came out into the park right next to the entrance to the Kilimanjaro Safaris. We decided to walk through the Pagani Forest and look at the gorillas. We were not disappointed:

We also got to see some meerkats – don’t cha just love the meerkats?:

Find the meerkat:

By this time, we were starting to get a little hungry. We also decided that we had had enough safari for one day. We headed back to the Mombasa Marketplace – Tink had seen something earlier and Frank headed back to the entrance to the safari to find two worthy recipients of our ‘anytime’ Fast Passes. Tink helped rescue a new friend and Frank found 2 women who were just thrilled to get the Fast Passes (the wait was up to 60 minutes at this point).

So now the big decision: where do we have lunch? According to the rules of our trip, we were supposed to try to do things were either hadn’t done before or hadn’t done in a long time. Now would be a good time to mention that the Flame Tree Barbecue is probably my favorite lunch place in all of WDW. I love the pulled pork sandwiches and the beautiful Asian-themed gardens – it’s so peaceful. That is, until the cars from Expedition Everest come shooting out of the mountain and you can hear the screams all the way across the pond! OK, so now that I’ve given the place such a big build up, I can tell you that we DIDN’T eat here, because it didn’t meet our criteria.

Instead, we went over to the Yak & Yeti, which now has a quick-service restaurant in addition to their table service. We took a look at the menu and weren’t really thrilled, so we decided to head back to Africa and Pizzafari. I know, I know. But we hadn’t been there in a long time so we thought it would be fun. Once inside, I realized that I had never really paid attention to the beautiful wall murals and paintings in this restaurant:

Look at this ceiling!:

DSCN1038.jpg

Tink found a kindred spirit:

DSCN1040.jpg

We found a beautiful outside table. Frank had a pizza, I had the bread sticks and we split a Caesar salad. One thing that surprised us was that the breadsticks were so much cheaper than the pizza, even though they were both made out of the same ingredients.

Tink shared a pizza with her new friend from the Mombasa Marketplace:

DSCN1091.jpg

We all had Mickey Bars for dessert:

Next we headed over to the Festival of the Lion King, my favorite show in all of WDW. I HAVE to see it every time we go to the Animal Kingdom. Here’s Frank and Tink waiting for the show to start:

DSCN1094.jpg

We have found that our favorite place to sit is in the Lion Section at the far left end, maybe 5 or 6 rows up. This has to advantages: 1) if you’re already sitting at the end, you never have to move over. 2) the performers come into the theater from your right side. Some of them will stop to chat or wave. 3) We found that the Tumble Monkeys tend to hang out over here when they’re not performing. I’ve gotten to ‘high-5’ a few and this time they actually came up into the stands to play with a kid behind us.

I couldn’t seem to get my camera on the right setting, but you can sort of see Simba in this one:

DSCN1100.jpg

After the show, we headed up to the shops at the front on our way out of the park. We decided to head back to the Contemporary for some rest and relaxation. Dinner was just an elevator ride away tonight, since we had a 6 PM reservation at The Wave.

Loving it Kathy...here's our picture of Meerkats...

I called it the Marks Brothers.

I called it the Marks Brothers.

That is too funny! Looks like one of those movies where they have the big prison break - they got caught in the spotlight before they got over the wall!

I could watch those little guys for hours!

They look like tey just got away with something and are hiding. :lmao:

Not too well though!

ahhh.. pizzafari. lots of great memories with the kids in that place.:grouphug:

I hadn't been there in soooo long - it really was fun. It's such a pretty place.
