To Infinity and Beyond *UPDATED July 5*

I made the mistake of asking the driver if we would be watching a Disney DVD on our way to the world- he grumbled something about working for Mears and not Disney. The kids had fun watching for purple signs though!

Great report!
Can't wait for your son to ride autopia!

Autopia? :confused3

I guess I am not up on the nicknames or something? Is this the Indy Speedway at MK or perhaps Test Track? If not, then I think we might have missed it.

krismom, Thanks for your info on your experience with the Magic Express and no video -- I guess I am glad that I didn't question it.

To Everyone Reading My Report:
I am working on the next few chapters. My next installment will most likely be early Monday morning, June 26. I will not be spending much time on the computer over the weekend. I just wanted to give everyone a heads up.

Have a nice weekend! :sunny:

Is that not what it is called??? Lol. It is the speedway in the Magic Kingdom.

When did they change its name???

I'll tune in Monday for more.

Loving your report so far!!! I have never used Southwest but it sounds like they really do it right, especially if you have kids!!!

Can't wait to hear all about the fun and excitement. Hope you (and Mickey) managed to win your DH over. Mine finally decided that it's worth it to give in, if only to see ME so happy :teeth:

I am looking forward to the rest of it, sounds like the Pilot & Crew were a blast!

I am looking forward to the rest. I also am envious that our pilots are not that entertaining!

Chapter Five: Caribbean Beach Resort (CBR)

My son enjoyed the bus ride, intensely checking out all the roads. He still was a bit sad that he missed out on experiencing a car trip down to Florida. He kept asking us to take pictures of the road signs and letting us know how the stoplights in Florida compared to the ones back home. Nothing escaped his detailed view. And it will be forever planted in his memory. We finally pulled up into the Caribbean Beach Resort. I couldn’t believe how expansive the resort is. I had read a lot of information on the boards about it but, I guess I couldn’t grasp how big it is until we were actually there. The scenery was beautiful. I loved all the tropical plants and the colorful buildings.

We pulled up to the front of Port Royale and unloaded from the bus.
The lobby of Port Royale looked just like the photos I had seen. It had the big fans on the ceiling that reminds me of the movie “Casablanca”. I gladly left my husband with the kids to go stand in the check-in line. Adding to the tropical theme was the couple behind me in line. They were all decked out in tropical clothing and gear. After a fairly short wait it was my turn! Yahoo! The CM pulled up our reservation and proceeded to match us with a room. Due to my DD’s mobility issues I had requested a room near a bus stop, Jamaica, if possible. I had read on the boards that it is usually the first stop going to the parks. It was important for us to be able to get a seat on the bus, since my daughter is not sturdy on her feet and cannot stand on her own for long periods of time. They honored our request with a corner room. Fantastic!

Being the frugal people that we are, my husband and I grabbed the luggage cart and headed out of the lobby and started walking down the sidewalk to find Jamaica. But, alas, we were stopped by a CM. I believe she was of Jamaican descent. She said in broken English, “You need a bell hop?” I replied, “No, no thanks. We are just going a short way.” With that I and my husband, with the kids and luggage cart in tow continued on our path. The CM hurried after us, and stopped us again. “Bell hop will take you to room.” I tried explaining to her that we weren’t going far, but she kept shaking her head no. Then she called over a bell hop. We were defeated. We handed over the luggage cart and sat down on one of the benches in front of the lobby. Across from us, was a man with a boy around six years old. The man was slumped down on the bench and had a glum look on his face. My dear son looked over at him and told him that we had just arrived. He replied that they were leaving. His face and body language said it all. He was headed back to reality. :smooth:

A bell hop called our name, and helped us into a little van. “Welcome to the Caribbean!” he said with a big smile and wonderful accent. He was extremely pleasant. The ride to our room was very short! But it really did seem as if on our short trip that we were transported to the Caribbean and Jamaica.

He showed us to the room, carrying a few bags with him. He ended up having to make one or two more trips to get the rest of our luggage. We seemed to have brought the whole continent with us. I have to say that it is just a part of my genes; I am an over-packer, second generation. My husband tipped the bell hop generously, and he was on his way.

Having a corner room is nice since you end up having a second window. I was happily surprised to find that the view was pleasant. The parking lot was hidden from view by the beautiful landscaping. We relaxed in the room for a little bit. Oops? Did I say relaxed? Ha! What a lie! The kids romped around the room, checking everything out and releasing some energy. My son had fun looking for and finding several hidden Mickeys in our room. Then it was time for us to take the short walk over the bridge to Port Royale for our dinner reservation at Shutters.

Chapter 6: Our First Experience with the Dining Meal Plan

We had made an ADR for Shutters for our first night at Disney. When planning our trip, I wasn’t sure what time we would get settled in our room, and expected us all to be worn out from the trip. So, I decided that it might be easier and more relaxing to start with a nice dinner at our resort instead of trying to catch a bus to one of the parks. Well, as the saying goes, good intentions often fall short…

The walk over through the small island was enjoyable. We also caught a view of the theme pool before we headed into Shutters. When we walked in, I was surprised at how much smaller the place looked than the photographs I had seen of it on the internet. I was also really surprised to see that Shutters seemed to be just an extension to the food court. The seating areas were together and only separated by half a wall and large shutters.

We arrived a few minutes before our scheduled reservation time and were seated immediately. To start, we ordered two appetizers to share. One was the Caesar Salad. My husband and I were both pleased with the salad. It was large. We also ordered the Spicy Island Wings (fried chicken wings marinated in Caribbean Junkanoo sauce and served with Bleu Cheese Dressing). These were tasty but very spicy.

For our entrees, both my children ages 8 and 2 had the macaroni and cheese. They both ate it fine. It was nothing special. So it suited their tastes. My husband and I both ordered the Island Smoked Prime Rib (Medium Well). The steaks came out very rare. They were very red and slightly bloody. We sent them back requesting that they be cooked longer. The steaks were returned a second time, still pink in nature. We went ahead and tried to eat them. My husband and I both like steaks and neither of us could finish them. I only ate a small portion of mine.

When the waitress saw that I was not eating mine and that it was still very pink inside went and spoke to her manager. He was very polite and was surprised to find that the steaks had been returned to the kitchen and still undercooked. He did not charge us for our two meals. We ended up not ordering any dessert since it took so long for us to get our steaks. Not that it will hurt me any if I miss dessert, it was just hard to turn it down, when it was already paid for as part of the dining plan. The dinner was a big disappointment for us, especially me. I had spent so much time researching and had so wanted to give my husband a great meal in order to start off our vacation.

We spent some time out on the patio enjoying the wonderful warm weather and the atmosphere. My DH and son, decided to check the place out a bit more, while I went back to our room in the hope of getting our young daughter (2) to bed. I really wanted her to get her rest so we could hit the parks early the next day. I had just got her settled into bed, and she was almost asleep, when we heard loud noises and saw flashes of lights through the crack in the curtains. I thought that it was thunder. After a few moments, I decided to investigate. I stepped outside the door and realized that it was the fireworks from Epcot or MGM. My daughter was up at once. So, the two of us walked around the building trying to get a glimpse of the fireworks. This was a mistake on my part, because, she got a look at the pool and was intent on getting into it.

Right then, my husband and son appeared and said that they got to actually see some of the fireworks from the patio. Well, since we were on vacation, I decided that since DD and DS were wide awake, we should go ahead and make use of the the small pool close to our room. When I said the magic words, “Do you want to go swimming?” I got the mixed reaction that I expected. My DD was thrilled and started running back to the room, to get her swim suit. Our son, Rand McNally, who is actually quite timid around water gave me a solemn nod. Once he got into the pool, he seemed to enjoy himself. My daughter loved it! It ended up being a great way to end our first day.

Next up Chapter 7: Mickey’s Castle

I always get nostalgic about CBR because it was our first WDW resort. Shutters was being renovated when we were there, so we did not get to try it, but the food court I believe is superior to the one at POFQ.

:beach: The theme pool is awesome for the kids during the day and the quiet pools are a nice way for them to unwind at the end of the evening.

If your son is like mine, he probably loves taking out the park maps and "studying" them!!

Looking forward to more!

Kathy

You are right Kathy! My son loved pulling out the park maps! He loved to navigate us around the parks. THAT is, when I was able to give up CONTROL myself! Tee Hee :rotfl2:

On Monday, July 10th I will post our first day in the Magic Kingdom. I lost my writing time this past week when my brother and his family came up for their yearly visit. We had quite a week with my extended family (all my siblings and their families along with our parents). WOW! I truly respect all the planning that many of you must do, including your ENDURANCE to plan and take a trip to Disney with a large group. After my own experiences this past week, I would encourage all of you to make concrete plans for at least one meal a day, and also make sure that you plan lots of things in small groups.
TOO much togetherness can be a bad thing!
