To go to the vet or not...

My poor precious cat is still going through it! So the first time we went to the doctor, he prescribed Biomox (Amoxicillin (sp?)). She had that before without any issues. Five days later, she was worse than before and throwing up every time we gave her medication. When she wouldn't even eat tuna, I knew she didn't feel well. I called the vet, we stopped the medication for 24 hours, and she started eating again. Restart the medication, vomiting again. Stop the medication, and she started spraying in her litter box again. Ahhhh...so we went back to the vet to try another medication orally (to make sure she wasn't allergic to it, too). She took that over the weekend without any issues. Then today, we went back to get an injection of the second medication. We sat there for an hour to make sure she didn't have a reaction, and she is still doing well this evening. I am so glad I got the vet involved. At this point, I might write a blank check if she would just feel better. Total spent to date on this UTI: about $200 on medication and office visits, and about $50 in carpet cleaner...J/K about the cleaner, but I am sure glad elbow grease is free! I sure hope she feels 100% soon.

Hope you kitty gets all better soon!

I have a cat who is prone to UTI's. He got them pretty frequently and would pee outside the litter box to let me know something was wrong. I finally tried switching to a Urinary Health Formula food and I think it's made quite a huge difference.

I use the Pro Plan Urinary Tract Health Formula Dry Kibble.

Our cat does this sometimes, she has interstitial cystitis, it's something people get as well. You can google it if you want. She gets it from not drinking enough...but not matter what we do she won't drink more...she won't eat the food the vet suggested either, she hardly eats any soft food, even tho we put it out daily. We just watch her closely and when she shows signs of it we watch her water intake as much as we can, and try to get as much "special" food as we can into her....we do buy the dry Science Diet for urinary issues but she literally eats around it....lol she's very picky like that.

I hope your fur baby feels better soon!

Oh and "free" cats...DD14 found 2 tiny kittens with no Momma, we brought them home to nurse them and then adopt them out, well that didn't happen, they both got very sick, one of them died and after watching DD14 with Tigger we just knew we couldn't get rid of him...and he's our favorite cat, he's so much fun and so loving!! He's just pretty much awesome! :) And his vet bill (at 5 weeks old) was about $200, then he had to have kitten milk and baby food to eat....lol Then 2 weeks later we went back and it was another $100, then shots, then getting him fixed...but he's so worth it. :)

Yes, the vet said that we would have to look into feline interstitial cystitis if she has another UTI within the next year or so. It requires getting a urine sample from her...which does not at all sound like a pleasant experience for her. She eats mostly wet (expensive, low ash) food now, but like your cat, rarely drinks her water. We even tried one of those expensive filtered, running water fountains. She wouldn't go anywhere near it. After talking to another kitty momma at the vet today, I am going to try her trick and add a small amount of tuna fish juice to her water.

If worse comes to worse, I will use her medicine syringe to put fresh water into the side of her cheek several times a day. She travels with us, and sometimes I have to do this to make sure she is getting enough water when it is hot out. She doesn't like it, but it gets the job done.

I am sorry to hear about your poor Kitty. And I can sort-of relate to the drinking water issue. One of my cats(the smart one, no less) would rather drink out of the toilet or the shower than drink the fresh, filtered water I put out several times a day. My husband calls her a 4-legged "money pit". But, like you, I am in a "committed relationship" with her now: whatever it costs, I am willing to pay. When my husband talks of making my fur-babies outside creatures, I remind him they are more than just pets...they are investments at this point! I wish you look diagnosing the problem quickly.
