To Disney: Stop Making Sequels....

yeah, if you want to sign the petition I'll give you the link. But I dont get what sara said, nobody did anything with e-mail or signatures

However, Disney has released several of these DTV films in theaters, and that has done significant damage. Plus, the sheer number of these DTV movies has a cumulative impact as well. Like I said, the impact of one bad DTV film doesn't equal the impact of one bad box office film, but Disney flooded the market with these things, and there's no doubt the cumulative impact is not negligible.

Or maybe it is negligible. I keep hearing this theory in relation to how it negatively impacts the brand.

Well if that's really the case, then how do you explain that after a decade of direct-to-video sub-par releases, a supersaturation of plush and a decline in quality in-house animation production, Disney is ranked 7th in global top brands:

So I suppose its possible there maybe some kind of agreement with regard to animation, but that's speculation to the extreme right now.

Yeah. I'll be curious to see what develops.

If you don't want hollywood to make sequals, then hit them in their pocketbook and stop going to the movies. money talks, hollywood is a business like everything else and if the business is losing money then the bosses will change the business model or plan.

Down from 6th last year, but the discussion hear is with respect to animation. A Disney animated film opening used to be an event, like a Pixar opening is now. Pixar's films open huge because the audience trusts the brand. Disney's films no longer have that luxury.

The only question is whether that is entirely because of the poor to mediocre box office showings of Disney's feature animated films, or if the DTV situation shares the blame.

I think the point of the argument is not simply "stop making sequels" but to start making quality story telling again which is not the case in many of these movies. And the main concern is to open the feature animation dept. again- just thoguht id add my own 2 cents to the thread i started... i hadnt been looking at it and didnt know it got any replies :rolleyes1

I can understand why Disney makes sequels, people love the characters in Toy Story, Little Mermaid, etc, and want to see more of their adventures. And while the production values aren't as wonderful, they still provide that niche.

The key to any film is good solid storytelling. Disney has lost that. It doesn't matter if it's bad animation like South Park or the highest quality Pixar computer graphics or Live Action. If the story sucks, it sucks. And that's Disney's problem. Storytelling is not just taking a script and recording it on film, it's a combination of many things.

The loss of the artists in Feature Animation not only created a void in the animation style, but also took away some major talent that were instrumental in rounding out the story with classic gags, etc. They were the heart of the project. I remember Bill Keane talking about how he envisioned Beast and what Beast would do, how he would act. Sure the script could say, "Beast touches Belle's cheek.", but the animator would make that screen direction memorable.

Pixar has such people in John Lassiter who sees beyond the story, Shrek's creators have the same thing. Disney has not shown in many of their recent projects, live action or otherwise that same depth and that is what is going to get them in trouble.

As far as DTV, I don't mind that, or sequels, as much as horrific remakes that Hollywood seems bent on...

While I might like some of the characters I personally don't wish to see new adventures with them, if they live happily ever after, leave it at that. I prefer to see new characters with new adventures... And I think the animation in South Park is fine, it's just their style, I also thought the animation done in the recent Disney movies was as good as always and told the story fine. The problem was, the story wasn't that good in the first place
