Have you heard the latest "scandal" about the series? My DD and my DH (I haven't talked to him since he started reading the books) LOVE the series and are excited for the next book. DH said you can go to the website and read a chapter. So, I went to the website to check it out. It's not a chapter, it's about 275 pages or what she has done of the 5th book. Turns out that someone published a rough draft online without the author's permission. She was upset, because, for one, it wasn't meant to be published, and two it wasn't how she wanted people to read it.

So, she has decided to post it on her website for all of her fans to see. Which, is kind of exciting. Until you read her note saying that she is just heartbroken about this whole thing, and at this point she doesn't know if she can continue on writing the book. (I would think there woudl be contracts). She says at this point if she had to finish the book, she'd kill off Edward. I think it's very sad that a series of books that are so popular could come to an end because someone was selfish enough to post it online :(

I had read that on her website - very few people had seen it so it must have been someone close :confused3

Very sad she feels she cant continue the series :confused3

Yeah, that happened several months ago. I do hope she does finish Midnight Sun. It's such a great concept & story

she'd kill off Edward

Noooooooooooooo!!!!!!

I hadn't heard about this and I hadn't seen her website. I sure do hope that she finishes the story (without killing Edward of course) and puts it to print. Even if I had read the story on her site I'd buy it to add to the series.

I read it on her site and enjoyed it even more than the stories from Bella's POV. I am actually trying to keep up with DD by listening to the audiobooks. Since she has a head start, I have just moved from Twilight to Eclipse (skipping New Moon). I like to know what she is reading, and have allowed these based on some opinions I trust, but I thought I ought to know for myself.

I do hope she finishes Midnight Sun just because it is an interesting perspective.

I think that happened awhile ago...but I did read Midnight Sun and I hope, hope, hope that she finishes it!! I really enjoyed the story from Edward's perspective. :lovestruc

Yes it did happen awhile ago...

I saw her on an interview...I tried to find it on You Tube but there is way to many...anyway she said she will finish someday, just has another idea she wants to do first.

There is a website

savemidnightsun.com that has a thing to sign for her to finish it.

She said herself though that the series was finished with the 4th book. How then, by rewriting them from Edward's perspective, could she kill him off and stick within the confines of the four original books?

I remember when Midnight Sun was leaked. It was right about the time I was finishing the 3rd book in the series. I waited until I finished the fourth book to read her draft online, but at her blog on her website I already knew what had happened. I wasn't one of those people who read the leaked version; I read the one she posted.

I personally really liked Midnight Sun, the 200 something odd pages she posted. I'd love for her to finish it, but I also understand what a violation of her privacy that was. She gave a few copies out to friends in confidence that they would help her with constructive criticism, not pass it on to other friends who would then post it online.

I would hope that she wouldn't go on to kill off Edward because it just wouldn't make sense within the context of the four original books.

If anybody is interested in reading HER take on it from her own blog and website, you can find it here:

Note that it makes no mention of her killing off Edward, though she may have stated that at a later date!!

I'd reccomend reading New Moon. You have to give Jacob his due, and New Moon is really necessary in his character development. It makes his actions in Eclipse make more sense.

I just got into the series and read all 4 books one long weekend. I just couldn't tear myself away from them. I'm not one to go searching online after an author so I knew nothing about this. I guess I'll have to go and read what's on her site now. Thanks for links.

She doesn't specifically mentioned Edward but she does say:
If I tried to write Midnight Sun now, in my current frame of mind, James would probably win and all the Cullens would die, which wouldn't dovetail too well with the original story.
I had to run this by my DD to make sure I had the details correct since I haven't actually read the books.

I'm sure it does. DD has New Moon, so I plan to circle back to it at the end. Right now I am more concerned with catching up with her and previewing as she reads. I read a reasonably detailed summary to hit the highlights so I would not be totally lost (not the same, I know but will have to do for now). My goal is to get done and read/listen to Breaking Dawn before I decide if/when she can read it.

Thanks for the feedback!

You guys need to jump over to the Community Board for a rollicking thread devoted strictly to Twilight. In fact, we're on our second thread.

I admit that I'm a fan - even at 47 years old.:goodvibes

I loved Midnight Sun and am really sorry that it was ruined - and that she won't finish it. I really recommend reading it, although you'll be an even bigger Edward fan once you understand things from his perspective and you'll be very disappointed when it just stops without making it to the end.

Oh my, I can't imagine reading the books out of order! You have to read them in order!!!!!

I was given specific advise to read Twilight, then Midnight Sun online, then Twilight again. Followed by 2, 3, and 4.

I read Twilight in 3 days, and DH just brought New Moon (#2) home today, but I am resisting the urge and going to read Midnight Sun first.

I've been Dazzled!

Aha! I never noticed that before! Thanks for pointing it out!

Good grief, I am beginning to be sorry I said anything! Again, there is a REASON I am reading out of order. It is more important to me to preview what DD is reading than 'ruining' the series for myself. Since I have a full time job, two children and a household to run, I have zero time to read (my favorite hobby), so I must listen on audiobook in the car while I commute. DD is on book 3, therefore I am jumping ahead so I can keep up with her.

I think Breaking Dawn is the most "adult" of the series. There are some passages in there that I would question allowing my daughter to read...but it would all depend on her maturity level and age. You know your DD best and know what she could handle. :)

Breaking Dawn was my favorite of the series. :goodvibes

Thanks Brandie!

I had heard that from Becky and Kate on this forum and also from some friends who have read the series. At first, both books 3 and 4 were declared off limits for DD. However, since all of the input I have had said book 3 was still fairly tame, I gave her the go ahead and I am listening to it at the same time. Breaking Dawn is still off limits until I am able to listen to it and decide when it will be appropriate.

Oops. I didn't mean to chastise you. I'm VERY sorry. I am so absorbed in this series that I was giving advice based on enjoying "the read" instead of being a responsible mother.

Book 4 is the one you need to read before she does I think. Breaking Dawn. Nothing is explicitely detailed necessarily, but there is adult content. Spoiler in white text, highlight to read if you want to: However, Bella and Edward are married and on their honeymoon - so it's not premarital sex.

How old is your daughter again?

I'm sad that the work for Midnight Sun was posted against the author's wishes, but at the same time, I cannot help myself from reading it.
