Hard Rocking my way to Universal Studios
At last my long-awaited 8th annual December Disney trip was here! Each December, I fly down to Disney World to spend time with some of the friends that I have met over the years. I am very lucky and blessed to have found such a wonderful group of friends. We always have a lot of laughs, and make lots of magical memories together.
I woke up at 4:00 a.m. to get ready to head to the airport for my 7:00 a.m. flight to Orlando. The towncar arrived right on time at 5:00 a.m. for the ride to Logan Airport in Boston. I dropped off my bag, and quickly made my way through security. I grabbed a bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich for breakfast, and made my way to the gate.
My flight took off on time, and it was a surprisingly smooth flight considering the stormy weather that was covering the northeast (it was pouring rain when we left Boston). My flight arrived in Orlando a bit ahead of schedule, and I made my way to baggage claim. My bag was one of the first off the plane, and I had my bag in hand by the time my SUV driver arrived at baggage claim to meet me.
My driver Ed drove me over to the Hard Rock Hotel at Universal Studios, where I would be spending the first night of my trip. Check in was quick and easy, and my room was ready! I was upgraded from a standard room to a garden view room. I was in room 4082, which was at the end of a short hallway. My room overlooked the boat dock and a small grassy area. The hotel was very peaceful. I never saw or heard another person on the hallway where my room was located.
The room itself was very roomy. It had two double beds, an arm chair and ottoman, and a small table. The bathroom was the typical size, but it had a nice sink area outside the bathroom. It was neat looking at the pictures of the Beatles, Rolling Stones, and other musicians hanging on the walls of my room. There were lots of neat little details that fit in with the theme of the resort. I would definitely stay here again, and would try to stay for more than one night next time.
After dropping off my bag, I headed out to walk to Universal Studios. I went to guest services to turn in the voucher for the free ticket I won in the Super bowl promotion last winter, and then walked over to the Hard Rock Café to grab some lunch. I started off with a ceasar salad, which had a tangy and peppery dressing, and very yummy croutons. I then had the hickory bbq bacon cheeseburger, which was one of the best burgers I have ever had. It had a thick slice of the best bacon I have ever tasted, and was big and juicy. It was cooked to perfection! I was sitting in the bar area, and the bartenders were attentive and pleasant (and got a sizable tip).
After lunch, I headed over to Universal Studios. My first stop was ET, which was broken down the last time I visited Universal. When I walked up, once again, it was broken down. I have bad ET karma, because it always seems to be broken down when I go. They were expecting it to be working later.
There were some characters right outside the ET attraction, and there was no lines so I decided to get some pictures. Curious George and the Man in the Yellow Hat, Scooby Doo and Shaggy, and Wood Woodpecker were all there.
I then made my way to go on the Simpsons ride, which was a lot of fun. I really love walking around the area where the Simpsons ride is. They did a really nice job on the theming, with the Kwik E Mart, and the entrance to the ride through Krusty the Clowns mouth--Krusty even had a Santa hat on!
I then went on Men In Black. I was in a row by myself, so I shot the aliens with two guns. I then headed over to the Mummy, which I road twice. This roller coaster is a lot of fun, although its a bit short. But they did a nice job on it considering the space they had to work with.
I also spent some time checking out the balloons from the Macys Thanksgiving Day parade that were scattered around the park. It was neat seeing them in person. I have to say that most of them were smaller than I thought they would be.
At one point I asked a Universal employee to take a picture of me standing in front of the Grover from Sesame Street balloon. I do not think this woman ever used a camera before in her life because it took five minutes for her to take a picture, and then she said, I want to take one more of you with that monster thing in the back. I guess she didnt know what I meant when I asked her to take my picture with Grover.
It took a while, but I did get a decent picture with Grover
I then headed over to Hollywood Rip, Ride, Rockit. It opened at 2:00 that day, and virtually everyone in the park was headed there. I wound up jumping in the single riders line. The ride broke down while I was in line, so I had a long wait to get on the ride. When we were close to the loading area for the ride, the group of four men who were in the single rides line behind me slid over into the main line, cutting out about 20 minutes of waiting for them and allowing them to ride together. I have to say that rude people who think they are more important than anyone else really annoy me.
The roller coaster itself was a lot of fun, and very intense. You have to pick the song you want really quickly, though. I didnt pick mine fast enough, and had to listen to some rap song that I wasnt familiar with.
After my ride on Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit, I started to make my way over to Disaster. Along the way, I ran into Shrek and Donkey, so I had my picture taken with them. It was a lot of fun watching Donkey talking to people. He was really funny.
It was a lot of fun watching people react to Donkey and Shrek.
I then headed over to Disaster, which I really enjoyed. The director character was really something else! I was very amazed by that special affect. It was probably the best special affects show I have ever seen, and we had great audience participation.
After Disaster, I headed over to Jaws, which I usually skip. Its just too hokey. I took another ride on the Simpsons ride, and finally got to go on ET! Its been so long since that was working when I tried to go on it that I cant remember the last time I saw it!
I then went on the Jimmy Neutron ride, which was cute, but I liked the old Hanna Barbera ride better. I also saw Shrek 4D, which was good, but not something I would go see every trip.
I then headed over to City Walk. I went to the gift shop at Pat OBriens to by a gift for my sister (whose name is Pat OBrien). I was thinking about going to the piano bar at Pat OBriens, but changed my mind.
I wound up taking advantage of Universals Meal and a Movie Deal. For $21.95, you got a meal from a limited menu at one of the City Walk restaurants, and a ticket to a movie at the theatre. I had dinner at the NASCAR Sports Grille. I got the Chicken Ranch Salad The salad was a bit on the bland side, but good enough. It could have used some barbecue or buffalo sauce to zest it up a bit. Again, I sat in the bar area, and had an excellent bartender serving me.
After dinner, I decided to go back to the hotel and change into jeans before going to the movie, as the temperature had dropped quite a bit now that the sun had gone down. I wound up taking a pedicab back to the hotel, which was fun. I had a really nice driver who was born in Massachusetts. He mentioned that he was heading to Boston to visit his father the day after Christmas. It turned out that his dad lived in the city where I grew up less than a half mile from my childhood home. Even at Universal, its a small world sometimes.
After changing into jeans, I headed back to City Walk to go to the movie. I decided to see New Moon. I arrived just a few minutes before the show started, and I was the first one in the theatre. By the time the previews were over, there were seven people in the theatre, and two of them wound up walking out after the previews. Annoyingly, one of the couples who were in the theatre decided to sit in the row behind me and proceeded to comment and laugh inappropriately throughout the movie. The movie itself was good, but I really wish they had picked different actors to play Jacob and Bella (which I also said after the original Twilight movie).
I love this nighttime shot of one of the Macy's balloons at the entrance to Universal Studios
After the movie, I grabbed a Cinnabon, and walked back to the Hard Rock Hotel. I ate some of the cinnabon, and went to bed.
