I just read on the TIW site that a gratuity of 18% is automatically added when you use the card. My question: Is the 18% calculated before or after the price is discounted?

the 18% is added after the discount has been applied
\

This is incorrect. The gratuity is based on the non-discounted amount as it should be. When receiving a discount on services (those that are tipped) you should ALWAYS tip on the non-discounted amount.

There is also no gratuity on counter service locations that take the card.

The tip is calculated BEFORE the discount. This helps prevent the wait staff from getting financially impacted when people use discounts / coupons.

the 18% is added after the discount has been applied

Nope. Calculated on the price before the discount. That's why they started doing the automatic tip in the first place.

So basically it should be called a "gratuity card."

;)

I keep debating getting this, but I can never decide if I am going to spend enough to really make it worth it...I need to analyze my food costs more closely. I'm not usually drinking alcohol or eating with really large groups, so I would need to eat a lot of expensive meals to break even. Hmmm...

You should always tip on the non-discounted price. As such, the gratuity is calculated on the full price of the meal. Since I tip 20% of the non-discounted price anyway, for me, and I like to dine at the signature restaurants, the TiW is a significant savings.

I decided to try it out this time. I did all of the math and between the 5 of us, we're only going to save about $50 total after having paid for the card. It's not a major savings by any means but still something. If I were to go again to Disney World this year (hint hint DH!!!) then it would be worth it moreso.

The 18% tip is calculated on the full price of the meal, but before tax on the meal is added. I agree with PP's that this is the only fair for the wait staff. You could say, basically, that the 20% TIW savings pays for the tip. That's good for you, and for the server.

Some say it's now only a 2% discount but that is true really for those who would never tip at all.

If you spend $75 on a membership (annual passholder) then you need to spend $375 on eligible food and beverages to make the membership worthwhile. If you spend $100 on a membership (Florida residents and DVC members) you have to spend $500 to break even. Past that, everything you spend is discounted.

I am aware of how much it takes to break even...just not sure how long it would take me to hit that point only paying for one person's meals. I think I just don't eat expensive enough meals to make it pay for itself no matter how often I go. I'm not usually eating thirty or forty dollar meals. I would have to revise my cheapskate mindset. :rotfl:

Break out those receipts from past trips!

If you drive, TIW also covers valet parking; for some of us, it's huge

I'm sure you know, but for others...it covers valet at the resorts for when you are dining and use USE the TIW card to pay. When we've used the valet, we have to show the receipt that has the TIW discount on there, in order to get it free.

I think the biggest value for us getting the card is our party size. We will always have 7 people eating together this trip and I would have had the 18% added automatically to my bill regardless of service level. So I may as well get the card and save the tip plus 2%. In the past when it was just 4 or 5 of us I really couldn't get it to work for us. However I am planning a few more trips later in the year and for next spring so I will more than make up for the cost of the card with AP purchase. Hope it works for you as well!!!

Last fall dh and I "broke even" with TiW (saved about $75). So this month's trip and next fall's will be all discount. Oh and I only ordered 1 alcoholic drink all trip so the savings was just on food really. :cool1:

Someone explain to me. I have recently purchased TIW card. I thought parking was already free if you are a Disney resort guest. Does this mean valet parking is free for us?

Parking at the parks is free for onsite guests and parking at the resorts in the self-parking lots is free for the purposes of dining or shopping at the resort. Valet is $12/day but if you dine at a resort and use TiW then valet is free.

So, this does not mean that valet parking when I check in at the Poly is free, correct? Even though I will be eating several meals there with my card.

Here is a working example, using $100.00 as the original bill to make the math show up easily. Note this is for Table Service. At Counter Service there is no gratuity added.

100.00 - Original Menu Amount
*20.00 - Discount
*80.00 - Subtotal
*18.00 - Gratuity Added based on $100
**5.20 - Sales Tax on $80
103.20 - Final amount charged, takes into consideration discount, gratuity and tax.

Without TiW Discount (and still figuring 18% Gratuity)

100.00 - Original Menu Amount
*18.00 - Gratuity
**6.50 - Sales Tax on $100
124.50 - Total

$21.30 - Savings using TiW Card.

(Note - At Victoria and Albert's the added gratuity is 20% instead of 18%.)
* Ignore the asterisks; they are there only so the columns/numbers line up properly.

For the complete list of locations and the rules, go to www.tablesinwonderland.com which is the Official Disney site.

I am so looking forward to getting my first Tables in Wonderland card later this month :dance3:
