Tivo

So I assume you need one TiVo box for each TV?
Yes and no. Obviously, you need one for each TV that you are going to want to transfer any shows to, but you can still watch your other TVs without having a TiVo hooked up to them.

Think of it like VCRs. You didn't need a VCR on every TV, but you needed one if you wanted to watch a taped show on that TV.

Okay, well I took the question to be a bit more specific than that: TiVo's main competition is the Moxi HD DVR, and (essentially) Windows 7 Media Center Edition. Both of those options offer low-cost boxes on remote televisions, the Moxi Mate and Media Center Extenders, respectively. So you still need a special box on every television, but with those other options, you don't need a separate DVR on every television, you just need a separate extender box. Of course, in those cases, you'd be well-advised to hard-wire your home for Ethernet, something which a lot of folks consider to be too expensive to consider.
