Tivo question-installation

I just got a new receiver from Directv with tivo capabilites (set it up ourselves) there is only a single cable going into it. I can only record the show I am watching. According to the booklet, if there are two cables, I can watch a different show than I am recording. Can I just get a splitter and hook up two cables to accomplish this?
Thanks. (it takes FOREVER to get through to tech support when you call....)

I believe DH had to run a second "line" down from the actual dish.

either that or he just wanted to go play up on the roof and he lied to me. heheh

You do need a dual output dish. Do you have that?
