I am curious as to what people tip for various services. I decided to get my nails done again. I have gone a couple of years without acrylic nails but treated myself yesterday. The shop I went to ...a friend recommended and is close by my house. I paid 25 for a new set and I tipped 7 bucks. A friend of mine said that was a GREAT TIP. :confused3 The technician did a good job. I am curious was 7 bucks too much?? Fills are 15 so I was thinking 3 bucks, but that seems like not that much. LOL I usually tip 5 to 7 for a pedicure depending on what I get done. There are different levels of PAMPERING when you get a pedi so I tip more if I get the full shebang. :thumbsup2 Is it customary to tip 15% to 20% for nail services?

So this got me thinking about tipping for other services. I tip about 15 to 18% for my hair girl. I always tip about 20% for restaurants if the service is good...less if it is just okay. So what do people tip pizza delivery? Do you tip if you pick up the pizza???? Sometimes I feel as though the person ringing up my pizza order when I pick it up is a bit put off that I don't include a tip. Do you tip at Starbucks? Chipotle? What about at some of the places where you order your food but they bring it to you?? I don't tip 20% at those places. I mean I walk up and order, get my own drink so will leave a couple of bucks. Is this BAD???

It seems anymore the TIP JAR is out everywhere......

Our usual is 20% for restaurants and also for nail and hair. On a $25 pedicure, I tip $5.

Lots of questions! When my daughter gets her nails done it costs $15 and I tip $2-3 depending on which tech she gets - there's a guy there that does nails that is just great with her, asking all kinds of questions and treating her like a grown up (she's been going there since she was 14, she's 16 now), so I tip him more because I really like him.

$7 on $25 is somewhere around 22% tip, and I think that's a fabulous tip, and yeah, is probably more than I would tip.

15% for hair sounds right, but I don't go to a high end salon, I might tip more there. I pretty much automatically tip 20% at restaurants and i'm told that's high, but I figure that extra buck or two means more to the waitstaff than it does to me. I do NOT tip when I pick up food. I might throw my change into a jar at a coffee place, I might not - usually I don't.

The only place I go where you order your food and they bring it to you is Noodles and Company, and they'll specifically tell you every single time that they do not accept tips. They are paid full wages, not waitstaff wages.

But really, it's all up to what you're comfortable with doing or not doing. The way I do things is not hte way someone else will do things, and I'm fine with that.

My DD got her nails done at this one place and it cost $25. She was paying with a debit card, and the tech asked if she wanted to include the tip on there as well. She put $5 and the tech started getting loud at her saying that was a pitiful tip. "All this work that I'm doing for you, and this is what you are giving me?", so my DD put a couple more and put $7. Needless to say she isn't going back there again. How much of a tip was this woman looking for? :confused3

I tip at restaurants where I have someone wait on me. The only time I would tip at a take out place is if I had a big complicated order. We never use curbside to go type services so this is not an issue.

I tip at Starbucks even thought I drink black coffee, they pour it put a lid on and that's it. I tip there because I love the kids that work there. I see them probably 3 times a week and over the last 2 years we have become friends. I brought them small Christmas presents. I just think they are really sweet kids!

I get my nails done once every 5 weeks I wear LCN nails and they last a lot longer. It costs 45.00 and I tip her 15.00

Hair is usually 20.00 once a month (I have short hair) and I tip 5.00

We tip pizza delivery on the rare occasions we get it, I am not sure how much that is not my area it's DBF's

At restaurants I tip 20% and round up if the service is good, if it's not they get less. I am no longer tipping 20% for poor service. Bartenders get 20% or more.

I tip taxi drivers and that is all I can think of.

I do not tip at sandwich shops it seems like every one of them has a tip jar.

What are LCN nails??

On the rare occasion that I get my nails done, I tip $3 for a $12 or $15 manicure, $5 for a pedi, and $7-8 if I get both.
So this got me thinking about tipping for other services. I tip about 15 to 18% for my hair girl.

For my kids haircuts ($15), I tip $1-$2. For my own haircut ($40) I tip $5

I always tip about 20% for restaurants if the service is good...less if it is just okay.
same here
So what do people tip pizza delivery?
for pizza and chinese delivery, I usually tip about $3-$5 (the bill usually is less than $20)

Do you tip if you pick up the pizza???? Sometimes I feel as though the person ringing up my pizza order when I pick it up is a bit put off that I don't include a tip.

No, I don't. If the gal at the counter is friendly and it's busy that night, I might throw the coins from my change in the tip jar, but not always.

Do you tip at Starbucks? Chipotle?
In those kinds of situations, I never tip. If they are particularly friendly, I might throw a few coins in, but usually not. Those people are paid as regular employees, they aren't paid sub-minimum wage like waitresses

What about at some of the places where you order your food but they bring it to you?? I don't tip 20% at those places. I mean I walk up and order, get my own drink so will leave a couple of bucks. Is this BAD??? In this sort of situation, I might tip like $1 per person, if it is one of those kind of places where they are clearing the table or bringing refills of drinks. Otherwise, no.

Oh, and the only other place that I go where I tip regularly is the local bar. I always tip well there...we get great service, sometimes free drinks from our bartenders that know us. We always tip minimum $1 per drink, and we usually round up a bit (if DH and I each have a beer the bill is usually $7.25, the bartender will get a $10 most of the time).

What are LCN nails??

Light concept nails/light cured nails. They are an alternative to acrylic. You can google them for a detailed explanation as to the difference.

If that happened to me, if it weren't too late she wouldn't get ANY tip, and I'd make sure the owner/manager was aware of what was going on. That's RIDICULOUS.

I tip $1 per drink at a bar and around 15% for a cab. I tip 20% at restaurants or salons or for a massage. Places like nail salons, hair salons, massage, etc usually want their tip in cash so maybe that's why Robmom's daughter got hassled? :confused3 I know most of the places I go have put up signs to please tip in cash for those kind of services.

I almost never tip for coffee. And here is where my husband disagrees with me (he's usually a good tipper) he tips just a buck or two for a pizza where I still do 20%.

What about restaurants with bathroom attendants? I've always just done a buck or two but I've never asked anyone to see if thats the correct amount.

If I go somewhere and stay at a hotel I put the door hanger up requesting not to be disturbed because I do not like my room cleaned while I'm there (I'm messy but I don't like people touching my mess ) but on checkout I leave them $5.

Hmm that's all I can think of right now....

yes the use a different material than the gels. I will never go back to any other type of nail. They seem more expensive but I can easily go 5 weeks without getting them redone. That saves me time. The nails also look as good on the day I get them redone as they do when I walk out of the salon. The color is applied under the clear stuff they put on top so it protects it. Nothing I do scratches or damages the color.

Now do you have tips put on too??

I usually tip 15% on haircuts and 18-20% for restaurants. I don't really do anything else that would require a tip.

Dawn

My haircuts are $27, and I tip $5. I think that is 18% or 19%, which I think is a good tip. We only go out to eat a couple of times a month, and I do 15% for average service and 20% for good service. If the service is truly horrendous (has only happened twice), I speak to the manager and don't leave a tip at all. If I go into a restaurant to pick up an order, I do not tip as I don't feel that someone handing me a bag or a pizza box warrants a tip. Tip jars just totally annoy me, since most places that have them aren't providing a service that deserves a tip (and the employees aren't being paid a sub-minimum wage like waitresses are).

You can bet that they don't report those cash tips. I do not carry cash so I always tell them that it goes on the card or I can't tip.

Robmom, how old is your DD? I've heard of these type of bullying situations if the patron is young. They'd pull that on me and get no tip and a royal telling off along with it posted to FB and the word spread to everyone that I know. When I was young though, I probably could have been bullied into a tip.

I tip $2-$5 on a $20 pedicure. Usually $5, but sometimes I'll get a tech who just rushes through, doesn't really take care of the callouses, and does a sloppy job on the polish. I won't tip $5 for that.

We normally tip 20% at restaurants. At casual places where I wait in line to order, get my own drink, etc... I don't tip. Starbucks, no tip. Carry out- no tip except at Outback's carside to go. They do save me getting out of the car so I tip a few dollars. Probably around 10%. Pizza delivery- $2 or $3 on top of the delivery charge.

Hair- I go to a $15 place every 3 or 4 months. I tip $3, so 20%.

I tip 15-20%, depending on the service.

If you think about it, the waitress isn't just waiting on you for the entire time that you are there.

But, the nail salon person or the massage therapist is.

So, those usually get more of a tip.

No to pizza being picked up. No to Starbucks or any of those types of places.

What's next? Tip the doctor or lawyer?

I tip 20% and up for good service in a restuarant. 15% for marginal service and less if it's poor. Once in a long while, I'll skip the tip if the service is just horrible. I only tip for counter service if the people are particularly nice or accommodating to special requests.

I tip closer to 30% for my kids' haircuts because the barber takes such great pains to get their hair exactly like we want it. If we ask for more off here or there, she keeps working until we're happy.

Sheila

I tip about 20% for manicures, pedicures, haircuts, facials, massages and eyebrow threading. On certain days of the week, my nail place has a special for mani/pedis where I'll tip 20% on the regular cost.

Taxis - I tip ~20% depends how the fare rounds.

Restaurants:
Dining in: 18-25% - depends on the service and the how the bill rounds.
Take out in restaurants: $5 - the waitress is still taking the order, packing it up, etc.
Take out from a pizza place, deli, starbucks, burger king type place - no tip
Food delivery - $4-5
Bartender: $1-2 per drink depending what it is & how much it costs. More at our local place but we get lots of free drinks.

Bathroom attendants: $1 the first time I use the restroom.

Hotel rooms: $2-3 per day for the two of us.

Bell Services: We just use this at Disney - $5ish if it's just a pile of luggage, $10 if we have groceries with us.

Coat checks - $1 per coat

Valets that hail taxis - $2

Parking Valets - $1-2 dropping off & picking up the car

Car wash - $3-5 depending which car it is (DH's filthy SUV or my clean coupe..LOL)

I can't think of anything else off the top of my head.

:scared1: your kidding?! I would of been like fine then, NO tip. And that would of been the end of that place ever again.
