Tips That Worked/Didn't Work For Us

In preparation for our trip in September 2005, I read and re-read all the tips posted here and any other site I could find. Even went to library and book store and read all the guide books. Well then came Hurricane Katrina, and my days of planning/packing were changed to days of throwing things in the suitcases to evacuate (with no power/water to get ready with). However, for that trip I had already started putting everything in my "Disney Box" so we still had alot of helpful things.

This year I re-read all the tips/books, and added to my "Disney Box" and luckily was able to pack with the help of lights. There were so many helpful things on these boards for us, that I wanted to try to list some of the things that really came in handy for us and also some of the things that we really didn't use. Of course, could be the thing your family needs. This is just our version ;)

Things We Used:
1. Whoever posted the idea about the cheap shower curtain hung by 3M post it hooks to seperate the sink area from the rest of the rooms deserves a big hug from me!! With my son and his 12 year old friend staying with us, this added privacy was a lifesaver. Also, allowed a little extra sleeping time for the boys and I could turn on the lights and get dressed without having to stand on the toilet :rotfl:
2. Take clothespins with you! Forgot these in 2005 but had them this year. Keeps the clothes on the pull out line without them all sinking to the middle and also great for closing up the open chips bags.
3. Mousekeeping Tip Envelopes -- I made these for both years. Real handy when rushing in the morning to just pull out an envelope that's ready to go with the tip and just lean it on the top of the TV.
4. Small pair of scissors -- Another thing I remembered this year. And Boy was I glad!. Used for moleskin, opening packages, cutting tags out.
5. Crocs -- Already wear these here at home, but they worked great for me, my husband and my son.
6. We used a Coleman brand ice chest that plugs in to a car lighter and has an adapter that works plugged in to the outlet in the room. We have used this the last 3 trips to Disney and once again were very happy with it. Kept our milk, drinks, leftovers, chicken salad very cold. Plus the fan noise helps me to sleep .... which brings me to
7. Small Fan -- I sleep with a fan going at home to drown out my husband's snoring. Always a problem when we travel. This trip took a small table top fan. Between it and the ice chest fan, had no problems with noise.
8. I used a Baggalini for this trip as opposed to a backpack. Big improvement! Got it in khaki and husband never minded sharing the carrying with me. Only complaints with the Baggalini -- so many pockets, I kept forgetting where I put stuff :confused3 and the outside water pocket net came loose from the binding.
9. We use the spray deodorant/powder method on our feet and the Arrid Cream Deodorant for chafing method. This is something my family does on any trip and has always worked well for us.
10. Used a snack credit (or you could just buy them) for a dozen cake donuts from the gift shop. Cost is just $3.79. Those with milk make a very inexpensive breakfast.
11. Another lifesaver (or should I say spacesaver!) that we have used the last 2 years is the cheap shoe organizer to hang next to the sink on the curtain rod to put all the toiletries, toothbrushes, lotions, razors, etc. into. Makes the mornings, packing, and finding things real easy.
12. Rolls of quarters for the tolls/laundry was nice to have so you didn't have to dig around for change.
13. I took laundry soap in small ziplocs (one load per ziploc). I didn't use them this trip but heard/saw people having to buy the expensive soap at the hotel. We took way too many clothes this time, so I just came home to piles of dirty laundry :sad2: Last year, due to the evac we had to do laundry when we got there and before we left (no power/water at home). And the laundry supplies get expensive there.
14. Another of the best ideas was the foldable, pop up laundry hampers. They were the best for keeping the dirty clothes together and out of the way. I have already loaned these to my sister in law for their trip next week to Pop Century. Thanks to whoever posted these!!!
15. Cheap dollar store rain ponchos (Gotta have them!)
16. Took small basket with medicines/creams that we might need/use. Of course the time I needed antibiotic cream for son's scraped knee, we were at the park and just went to the First Aid center and they gave us what we needed. But still like to have my basket in the room just in case!

Things That I Won't Take Next Time:
1. Beach Towels -- Took them for use at Water Parks. Takes up a lot of room on trip down/back when all we had to do was use hotel towels or pay $1.00 to rent ones at water parks.
2. Pool Toys -- Took too many. Boys liked having the splash bombs but didn't want any of the bigger toys/floats. Only so much room in the pool and you have to keep up with them.
3. Plastic Cups -- Saw someone post to bring plastic cup for rinsing hair. I didn't take one (due to boys ages) but want to remind that they leave plasic cups by the ice bucket every night.
4. So many clothes for the boys! All they wanted to wear was bathing suits and t-shirts.
5. We went to Target first day and bought Pepsi, Water, cereal, milk, and snacks. Next trip we will limit all of that if we are on Free Dining. With Free Dining you get so much food that we actually brought home most of what we bought. We even left almost a 12 pack of sodas in the room (no room in car).

Sure there are many more, but this is getting way too long. Any questions, I'll try to answer!!

There were some great tips there, thanks...I also took WAY to many snacks to WDW when we had free dining, came back with almost every bit of it, what a mess it became. I did bring down a basket for dirty clothes that seemed to keep the room cleaner.

Would you please elaborate on the spray deodorant/powder method for your feet? Thanks.

Thanks for the list. I agree with most everything.

We took way to many snacks the last time and brought most of it home.

Like the pop-up hamper idea - usually everyone just throws that stuff in the suitcase.

Again, thanks. :thumbsup2

I'll try to explain this and also if you search the tips threads you'll see alot of other people's suggestions for this. I read it here last year and we use it often. Many other suggestions to help reduce blisters, but this and moleskin for hot spots really helped us.

To keep our feet from getting blisters (which are often caused from wetness on your feet with the friction of your shoes) we spray AntiPerspirant/Deodorant on the bottoms and tops of our feet, then sprinkle on foot powder and then put on our socks. I also take extra pairs of socks with us just in case we get wet. This spray/powder combination will really help keep your feet dry. No blisters in the 8 days we were there (except for on my heel where my sock and shoe met (new socks!!).

Hope this helps. :)

All of our dirty laundry ended up back in the suitcase to come home too. But it was nice to be able to keep the clean clothes in the suitcases, hanging, or in the dresser and the dirty ones all together out of the way in the hampers. Also, left us dresser space for supplies, chips, paperwork. :thumbsup2

I'm interested in this tip, which I've never heard of. The privacy curtain is one of the little things I liked when we switched from a value to a mod resort last trip.

Is one curtain long enough? How many hooks did you need? Did you put hooks on the ceiling or only on the two walls?

Please tell me more. :yay:

Thanks for the tips - there were a couple of things that I didn't have on my list for my upcoming trip in 12 DAYS :cool1: :cool1:  :cool1:

I learned this here on the boards and it was one of the greatest tips for us! I bought a package of 3M Command hooks (2 in a package). They are the ones that you just peel the back off the sticky stuff and stick to the wall, but they come back off without messing up the wall or paint. I also went to the dollar store and bought a cheap ($1) shower curtain liner. When we got in our room I put one hook on each side of the opening to the sink area. Then I just hung the shower liner on one hook using the holes that are already in the top of the liner. When we needed the extra privacy just unhooked one side and put it across the opening and hooked it on the other side. Then when done just hooked it back open. Worked great. :)

Guess I'm off to Walmart and Dollar Tree! Thanks for the tip!! :joker:

Thanks for the great tips! I keep telling DF that I am packing this stuff and he thinks I am nuts but I know he will thank me later!!! :goodvibes

I love the shower curtain idea. I didn't do that this trip, but will next time. I dont' know why they design a room the way they do. You have no room.

Not weird at all! My family does this too because it really works.

Wow! Those were all things I have never thought of....
When we went on the DDP I found that my boyfriend wanted Breakfast everyday, even by mid vacay when I was still full from last night's dinner... I loved your tips! If they have free dining this August we may just go then but we are still deciding when to go so I printed your list! If anyone else has anymore similar tips please share!! :flower3:

I love your list.

I just got back yesterday. From DIS, I used the following tips:

- shoe bag hanging with toiletries/etc. It was GREAT! I forgot it there (rushing with last minute packing, realized after I got to ME that I left it hanging in the room :( I hope the next person in the room realizes WHY it is there and gets some use out of it).
- The "one set of clothes per ziplock bag" was a perfect tip. The kids just grabbed a bag with their name on it and got dressed each morning. I put the bags of clothes in the dresser door the day we arrived and used the empty suitcase as a dirty clothes hamper.

I too would leave the beach towels at home, though the kids LOVED the surprise new Buzz towels I got (on clearance from Disney.com) specifically for the trip. I had SUCH a hard time packing to come home though, the towels took too much space.

We used the milk and cereal in the room tip. I brought the individual size boxes (the combo packs) of cereal. Though I brought too much because my sister and I didn't use them every day, the kids did. I had some to bring home.

The scissors I would NEVER have thought to bring, and they came in handy. So glad I found DIS.

Just back-

*Wish I had only worn my Crocs, tried flip flops (Teva) one day and paid for it everyday after
*Next time we will stay longer, six days was not enough
*Messenger style bag was the way to go!!
*Bringing own glowsticks was a HUGE plus!
*Long "flowy" skirts...perfect attire for the "not so tan" legs! Comfy, cool, GREAT!
*Early afternoon nap and late nights worked great for us!
