Tips on Packing Liquids, shampoos, cleansers, lotions, etc

Duh....when you turn the bag over (the side opposite the 'writing') that side is CLEAR.

I have 3 different brands of zip bags here and all have either writing (Hefty, Ziploc) or a white space to put writing.

TURN THE BAG OVER!!! :dance3:
That would require the baggie checker to have problem solving skills.

Also make sure that baggie is completely clear. There can be no branding on the baggie (like ziploc does sometimes). I got chastised at the airport for using a baggy that said ziploc on it.

My baggie says Ziploc on one side. I've flown about 8 one way trips since I started using it out of the following airports: Washington Reagan, Washington Dulles, Baltimore, San Antonio, Orlando and Las Vegas. Nobody said anything about the baggie having ZIPLOC written on one side.

One thing that I just did on my business trip & plan on doing in 2 weeks for our trip to Disney is to tape the lids shut. I used packaging tape, but I'm sure some would even say this is another reason to have duct tape with you!! I packed the roll in my checked luggage (the type of roll w/ the cutter on it so I wouldn't need scissors). I did still put them in a baggie before I put them in my luggage, just in case it exploded somehow.

I will be checking everything except Meds. Liquids go in baggies and then into a small clear box that has a snap on lid. That way when they spill, it is a controlled spill.

At Phoenix last week they were confiscating 6 ounce toothpaste
tubes less than 1/2 full (so containing less than the 3 permitted ounces)>
TSA said that it is the size of the container, not to weight of contents,
that counts.

From what I hear on another thread (don't go there, it's getting nasty!), the TSA just changed the regs to include partial fills and upped the limit to 3.4 oz containers (which is 100 ml, a common European size for travel samples). The TSA site hadn't updated the info as of yesterday, but the Boston Globe had an article on it.

I'll assume the "duh" is for the TSA agent, and not me, since I'm not the one checking you in.... :teeth:
By the way, Glad bags are completely clear. Even the logo writing is clear. Not that I'm touting one brand over another....

The more I read about this, the more confused I get. Are clear plastic bottles okay or not to put your liquids in? I'm talking about the clear, plastic empty bottles you buy at Walmart or Target in the travel size toiletries section. One post said that you can only use containers that are marked stating how many oz. it contains. We leave in a week and I don't know how to pack anything!

Even though refillable travel bottles of 3 oz. or less are not officially banned, they are pretty useless in practice, because the agents tend to claim that if the bottle is not *factory-marked* by size, then they cannot tell whether or not it is less than 3 oz. The usual result is that you dump it or you don't pass.

Most travelers are getting around this by buying sample sizes of whatever is cheapest, dumping the contents, and refilling the bottles with their preferred product. It doesn't matter whether or not the bottle is clear, just that it has a mfr. label stating the volume of the contents.

OMG the more I read, the more confused I get!! :confused3

I have expensive makeup that I really don't want to check. It is powder, there is no liquid except for the mascara and lip gloss that I plan on putting in my bag. I am afraid that my checked bag will get lost...that happened to me last year. Seeing as though powder is not a liquid, gel, or aerosal, is it okay??? Also, about this whold "clear" bag thing, has anyone actually had their bag tossed because it has ziploc on it? Mine say ziploc. I am so confused!!! Please, help me :sunny:

I'm sure powder is fine. And although there's anecdotal evidence that some TSA's are interpreting rules differently than others, I want to believe that there won't be a problem with ziplocks with branding on them, since it's not specifically banned, as long as the items within can be seen clearly from both sides.

I went to Target and got my travel sizes. I have the clear bags. Only Liquid and gels need to be in the bag. I found keeping things to a minimum to be helpful. Also ask your hairdresser for samples etc. And Eckard's had a lot of smaller sizes, including the sunblock which is hard to find in the small size.

I would not worry about the powered makeup it is fine.

I'm pretty sure that's what the photo-stylists the TSA hired. The bag in this photo appears to be a Ziploc Easy Zipper storage bag and I'm 99.44% sure it has a logo on the side that's not facing us. At least it did when I packed the same style of bag with my carry-on liquids and gels. The Hefty One-Zip bags that now carry a label of "meets airline security guidelines" has a large writeable surface on one side. I think the word "clear" is as clear as mud.

Good one! :rotfl:

I almost added something to that...but thought better of it. :teeth:
