Tips for housekeeping staff

I have read many leave tips for the people that clean the rooms at the hotels, i was thinking of different things, like cash one day, phone card one day and walmart gift card one day, where do you leave these items so the housekeeping people know it is for them and it's ok to take it, should i put it in an envelope or on a piece of paper or on the bed or what?
please advise

I always make envelopes with my kid's pictures and a big Thank you written on it. Then when I am there I add a handwritten little note about their good service. "Mousekeeping - thanks for the extra towels, we really love the pool!" that kind of thing. They really seem to like the pics of the kids. It also lets them know its for them.

well they pretty much get cahs tips but by doing a variety, like the wlamart card, they can buy some things they need and not use their money, i know many of them send the money home to their families, this way they do not have to use it, i plan to tip cash one day not all the days of my stay

Depends, how many in your party? One dollar per person per day, plus a little extra because our children can be quite messy (things like a lot of crumbs, a bigger pile of wet towels, or whatnot, I try to keep things picked up.) If you have a gift/phone card, maybe a $5 card?

I understand your sentiment but how many housekeepers need a phone card? The Wal Mart card is a little better but maybe money to them could be put to better use?

actually many of them use phone cards to call home, but we are all entitled to do things the way we want to, thanks for all the feedback from everyone

I know you didn't ask for opinions, just where to put the stuff, but when I was growing up, tip money was what fed us kids. I think the idea is a cute one, but wonder if it would be appreciated.
Also, I'm not sure what Disney's policy is on the maids accepting gifts. I've seen the maids with clear little pocketbooks, which I assume is so their boss can do a quick check, to make sure nothing is stolen from a room. I may be a little sensitive, since one of the items stolen from us in February was a Walmart gift card..along with my grandsons wallet it was in (and his DVD's and case, and a bit of money).

To answer your question. I just grab a pen and piece of paper and write to housekeeping...they take it every time...i am not organized enough to do the whole envelope thing.

What we did last christmas, not just at our hotel, I bought bars of chocolate (we are from the UK) wrapped them up and presented them to our servers over the xmas period. I have had to work in the past over christmas and its hard not being with your family. They all loved the little gifts and in most cases it ended up with us having a little extra pixie dust.

We put our tips in an envelope that said "for our mousekeepers" on it and left it on the pillow. I read somewhere (probably on this board) that leaving the money on your pillow showed it was a tip and not just money that was accidentially left sitting around. Just to be sure they took it we made the cute little envelopes too.

We use an envelope and clearly write Mousekeeping, leave it on a non cluttered area of the counter. I hope it makes their day !!

I make my own envelopes on the printer with Disney character clip art (just do a Google search and several web sites will pop up with clip art you can use, I find the ones others have posted on their own websites never seem to work, at least for me anyway!) and leave it on one of the pillows so they are sure to find it. I leave $5 per night. For what we spend on these trips, what's another $5? I figure anyone that cleans hotel rooms for a living can use the money anyway.

Personaly, I think cash is the best gift, you can use it for anything! Pay a bill, buy food or clothing, send it home to your family, whatever the Mousekeeper needs that week. But any tip or gift is appreciated, I'm sure!

Personally, I can't stand Wal-Mart, I never shop there, and I have a cell phone so phone cards do me no good. I know that you're not tipping me, but I can't be alone in this either.

I am glad I saw this about the tips, sometimes I'm not sure what to leave. I should probably pre-pack envelopes.

That's my grandson eating the Kitchen Sink from Beaches and Cream. He did a good job on it! I don't particularly like all the stuff together, but he had a good time.

I think it's mostly the area that I live in, Happylawyer. The Wal-marts here aren't the big fancy ones like they have in other places. They are almost always dirty and unkepmt with merchandise strewn about. I forced myself to go in there the other day for something, just because it was more convenient, and watched a little boy wipe his nose on some shirts that were hanging while his mother just looked on, not caring. Blech, Wal-mart just squicks me out!

Ohhh and looooove to Target. =)

OP - personally, I think it is a great idea. Everyone CAN use a phonecard, even if just to make local calls. A Walmart card is great too because they can purchase what they want from the store - it's not like the card is limited to certain items. I'm sorry I can't answer your original question, but I just thought I wanted to let you know that at least some of us think it's a cool idea
