We've recently moved to FL and now have APs which means we are going more often. I am HIGHLY susceptible to heat stroke and am trying to figure out ways to help stay cool in the parks.

Any tips on what y'all have done? Wet washcloths, neck cooler things or ?

I am susceptible as well. This year we will be trying Chilly Pads. Previously we've used the homemade neck coolers with the gel beads in them. They work well if you keep them cold and rinse them a lot. I always wear a hat.

The thing that works best for me is to get my head wet. I find that if my head and neck are wet I am much better off. I also do not go longer than and hour without stopping in air conditioning to drink ice water.I drink half and dump the other half on my head :rotfl:

Best of luck!

What are chilly pads? And what neck cooler things are you referring to? Sorry for sounding so confused. Before now, we've only ever gone in the winter so I didn't need to worry about this kind of thing.

I've also seen both at Dick's Sporting Goods. You might also want to check out:

Wal Mart also has misting fans.

I was always told get up early and be out as the heat starts to rise.
Does that make sense? The hotter part of the day is 1-4 so you should already be at a park long before then.
Start out when the park opens and as the day heats up it won't seem as terrible. Or you can get there early then return home in the hottest part of the day.
Good luck and congrats on the move..I would love to move to FL...maybe some day...:cloud9:

Disposable ice packs. Found in the first aid section of a store. You squeeze to activate and then put them on your head (under a hat) or the back of your neck and instant cooling. Then toss after the cool wears off---but they stay cold for quite awhile.

Start early, go inside at lunch, come back after 6.

Lots and lots of water. Not super cold either. You will dehydrate quicker than you think. And the supercold water will shock your system, but make it harder for your body to regulate temperature (from the kids doctor)

Avoid wearing dark colors and flipflops--they just seem to catch the heat from teh pavement (at least for me)

Keep your head wet, if you can. my dh and son wear these boonie (sp?) hats that they just soak the hats in the sink and wear them until they start drying, then repeat. (not sure how it helps, but they swear it does)

Always use sunscreens

Teh humidity will take as much out of you as the heat. We've lived in AZ and NV and now we're down here in FL, and I can say that I would rather be in AZ or NV in the summer. Yes, a "dry heat" feels cooler than a "wet heat".

drink plenty of water not soda. The sugar in the soda will make you want to drink more.I found that out the firstv time I went to Disneyworld. The only time we would drink soda was eating lunch and when we got back to the hotel

I am not suseptiable to heat stroke, but live in GA and deal with similar heat and humitdy all the time.
I am a runner as well- and personally have the frogg togg- aka chilly pads... They are GREAT> They don't feel soaking wet- but they stay COLD for a LONG time! Its amazing. I highly recommend them. You won't feel 'wet' but it will keep you cool!:)

My best suggestion is free:) Take a hand towel and wet it. Place is around your neck and when is starts to dry up, rewet and continue on your way:) I don't like to have my face sticky so I use the towel to wipe my face as well....works perfectly:) Good luck with whatever you decide.

I noticed a few people who had washcloths that they had on the back of their neck or under their hat. I thought that was a great idea.

We love our fan/squirt bottles. Fill them with ice water and they really help keep you cool.

We carry a Camelbak backpack in the parks, with water frozen in the water bladder part. Each night we fill the bladder halfway with filtered/bottled water (can't stand the sulfur-y water at WDW) and lay it flat in the freezer overnight. The next morning we top it off with refrigerated water and we're off. The frozen block of ice on our back helps to keep us cool (although there is a little padding between the bladder and your back, so it's not freezing) all morning. We keep trays of ice cubes ready to go in our condo at OKW and just fill it with ice cubes and more cold water if we go back to the room for a break.

wearing sun block is a good option, and the best one if find is wearing a hat. it covers the whole face and dont let the sun heat it up.

I also find it helpful to walk inside the stores/attractions. You can do this entering/exiting MK and DHS and throughout EPCOT.

A little tip that I've heard before was to put the inside of your wrists under cool water for a few seconds.

It certainly helps me.
