tips for constructing an amelia earhart plane for a school project...

It doesn't have to be to scale, it doesn't have to be perfect. Think of when your kid is constructing their own club house or something.

Any tips on making a plane that can be easily transported.

Our homeschool group is doing "Night at the Museum" with kids dressed as people from history, and including however little or much as part of their display for their exhibit.

So any thoughts on making a pretend plane that doesn't have to be perfect?

I'd carve it out of styrofoam. Three pieces: fuselage, wings, tail (with maybe a bit of cardboard for those back fins.)

Go to a real art supply store or a hobby store like tose that sell model trains, and get balsa wood. It is a super lightweight, soft wood, thin, easy to cut with scissors or even break in half by hand. It is purposely used for making little items in those model train displays.

Making planes from scratch IMO is really hard, long and tedeous. Can you just use a regular model? I'm sure you can get the Lockheed on ebay or at your local hobby shop. Doing balsa models can take hours and hours, I did a few in the past, and never again, too impatient.

Or if you want to go big, you can get a remote control model version, more expensive, but they look very cool. I"m sure someone makes them.
