We booked a Space Available guaranteed oceanview stateroom for 2 on the June 27 Dream Mediterannean. Verandas were not available at CM rates at the time. We also have not received our cabin assignment yet.

We are considering moving up to a veranda if available. Are there any tips or tricks to get the best rate?

Also when is the best time to try: right now, when we get our cabin assignment, just before we cruise or after we are onboard?

If you try to upgrade now or when you are assigned your cabin you have to pay the going published rate. Your best shot is to try at check in.

At least in the US, when you want to upgrade you check in like usual at the terminal and then head to the Supervisor's desk to inquire about upgrades, if available. If no upgrades are available they usually put a sign up stating that. Upgrades are usually less expensive when done at the terminal then if you called DCL before the sailing date. If available they have a chart with the cost of upgrading from one category to another. Since you paid a CM rate I don't think they will price it as a CM rate for the upgrade so even though it may be less than calling now, it may still be expensive.

Of course the earlier you can get to the terminal, the better chance for an upgrade. If that is how they do it for the Europe cruises is anyone's guess.
