Tipping?

If I'm taking airport shuttle, I might tip $1 for the entire family, but we have also tipped $1 per person. It also makes a difference if they help me with my luggage or not and how talkative they are. Taxi - I generally give 15%, plus $1 bag if they actually help me load it in. Bell hop or skycap folks = $1/bag as well. I don't use these services normally though.

At restaurants, I tip 15% of the total and may round up to the nearest 50 cents. I don't tip counter service, Starbucks, or take out. I don't drink, so I don't usually have to worry about the bar.

At the hotel, I will leave $1 per person in the room for Housekeeping. From my personal poll on a different website, about 50% of the time, people leave a tip. I do it because it's a job I would NEVER do. I generally hate hotel rooms, so it's more sympathy money. You don't have to do this. I think those stereotypical 10 college kids making a mess cramped in one small hotel room should consider tipping though. We're really clean and easy. I never tip the concierge since I never need their service.

Room service - it's generally on your tab, but if it's not, then I would also do 15%. I've never ordered room service at a hotel.

I think that covers everything.

You are taking my words out of context. Room service is not housekeeping.

Housekeeping is not commonly tipped. Get it?

What I "get" is that you edited your original comment last night at 9:36 PM (as shown in the footer of the post) after both myself and bumbershoot quoted your original reply and disagreed with you. Please don't alter your original post and then accuse me (or anyone else for that matter) of twisting your words. That's just simply not cool.

Let's not split hairs, skiingfast. Yes, in your post (post #6) you switched Room service for housekeeping, after the fact....big difference. It's now changed. Thank you. Yes, in a later post (#16) you mention something about taking words out of context. Nothing was taken out of context.....your words were simply quoted and I then mentioned the inconsistency of the terminology between room service and housekeeping.....two VERY different things.....
Exactly correct. Thank you, MaiynaMouse. :wizard:

Boltnut55, welcome to DIS! :wizard:

We tip room service, when we order food to be delivered to our room we definitely tip the person who brings it. :) We even tip the people who take the dirty trays away, we put a few $$s on the tray for the person who picks it up, we rarely leave the tray in hallway but rather in our room to be picked up the following day. We do check to see if a gratuity is already added but we generally hand a few dollars over even if it is added. :)
We also tend to tip the valet who brings us our car, that tip is based on the weather and how quickly we can get our car. At our timeshare (in Anaheim) they only allow valet parking, this is due to a very small lot and a lot of cars, we tend to tip them daily (we generally ask how long they are on duty) and then we generally leave a little more on the bill when we leave, we do this because we discovered that most of them are paid very little in the way of wages, they do a good job, are very helpful and we've never had any problems with them at all.
When taking a taxi we have tipped, when taking a shuttle we've tipped when the service warranted it (ie help with bags or kids, the driver going out of his way to make sure we have a good experience (we had a shuttle guy once who sang songs between the hotel & DL, on the way back to the hotel the same driver did trivia with the girls so he got a little extra thank you), when we had a limo for my BFF's bachlorette party we tipped the driver because he went out of his way to make sure our day was amazing, things like that earn a little extra). for us it's about the service we receive, we don't tip because it's expected.;

Those are our habits in addition to my pp which covered housekeeping & restaurants. :)

You seem to lack some facts. And that is not cool.

Do you get it or not? Do I have to explain about tipping again to actually add to the discussion?

Wow! This is one of the many reasons I shy away from discussion boards. I go through phases. Sometimes I feel like I really need the planning help so I come to the DIS to get the info I need (and provide the limited knowledge I have considering we are "once a year" kind of peeps). Other times, I feel like it's just not worth it because what I might have to contribute just might be misconstrued. :(

Bottom line is....I love Disneyland. I love that my kids love Disneyland. I adore that my husband entertains me in my love. I wish the negativity and "no, I said but he/she said" didn't exist. I'm a teacher. I deal with that on a daily basis. I come here for a reprieve. Interesting to see that many adults still act like they are in first grade. Yes, I am willing to judge because I see first graders....DAILY!!!!!!

I'll move back to simply reading and gleaning information because clearly I have nothing to contribute.

Cheers!

^^ I agree with you. For goodness sake people let's sop the hairsplitting. We all know what she meant. she made a mistake, corrected it and let's move on. I didn't even notice the mistake till someone pointed it out over and over. This is a friendly board.

Oh, I hope you'll reconsider and contribute more. It's great hearing from a variety of people to find out what their experiences are. I know what you mean about message boards but generally speaking, the DLR boards here on the dis are pretty friendly so I hope one incident won't keep you from joining us. :)

Please don't stop contributing here. We have a lot of great people with very good ideas. I'm sure we'd benefit from your posts, too. :)

As for the tipping, I like the guides given in an earlier post. Although I think that tipping should be optional, we do choose to tip for many services, including housekeeping.

I hope some of the good tips here helped you out fostapeepz.

$1 per bag for transportation or bellman
$1 per person /per day for housekeeping.

We made up little mousekeeping envelopes in advance and left them in the bathroom on the toiletries tray. My daughter loved doing this and we made it her responsibility to take care of it(including putting all of the Mickey toiletries they left from the day before in our suitcase):yay:

When I called Disney Dining and made ressies at Ariel's and Goofy's they quoted me the price of the meal and said that didn't include tax of 8.75% and a tip of 18%.

bjoost - do you have a large party of people you are planning to be at Goofy's or Ariel's with? I ask because Goofy's generally charges 15% gratuity on their bills - unless you exceed a certain number of people, I think, in which case it becomes 18%. I'm not sure what Ariel's does, but it's probably handled the same way.

I join the others in saying: Please don't stop contributing. DIS would not have so much helpful information if everyone went into stealth mode. Your contributions are valued, will help you with your trip planning, and will most likely help others, as well. I hope you choose to continue posting.

Hmm, interesting thread!

* Let me start by saying that I am an over-tipper.

I always tip 33% or more if the service is better than good. I think we should tip on the total, because the server has to declare that amount and is taxed on the projected tips of their total sales (at least in Hawaii).

I always leave something for housekeeping. Usually for my family of four, it's $5-10/day (depending on what kind of room -- studio, suite, etc.)

I give the driver of any kind of shuttle or private bus company a buck or two per person.

And I generally agree with the rest of what has been said already.

My thought is that it's really not going to hurt me to give these tips, but it can really make someone's day. Just my opinion though....

NO IT WON'T! BUt tippping at the DLR is on your own discrestion!(did i spell that right?) just like you can tip the bartenders at the wine bar at DCA but its' on your own accord..

You're saying the server has to declare the total of the bill? I'm not sure, that's why I'm confirming. :) The rules for this vary by state, when my sis was a server in OR she was paid less then minimum wage because they counted tips as part of her actual wage (which I think is crap because what if someone doesn't tip?), here in CA (at least when I worked with someone who had to claim his tips and mileage after his shifts) you just declare your tips, when you would clock out it would ask how much you made in tips and you entered your dollar amount there.

Discretion. :) :) Close enough tho. :) What people always seem to forget is tips are a gratuity, they are not required. As Funball says, you can tip the bartenders at the wine bar or not, when DBF and I go wine tasting we can tip our tasting host/ess or not, it depends on the service we get. Service at a hotel, in a taxi, at a restaurant, from a skycap etc etc is what should determine the tip, not a feeling of necessity. My Mom told me this one and I've always remembered it......here's the definition of tips.
T- to
I- insure
P- prompt
S- service
That's how I've always looked at it, that's how everyone in our family looks at it as well, even the sis who was a server at 3 or 4 bar & grill type places. :)

Thank you everyone for your nice words of encouragement. Admittedly, I had a rough day yesterday and I really wouldn't normally let discussion board comments get the best of me. I don't post often but I do use the DISboards as a resource OFTEN!!!! Thanks for your support. :)

Whether you're here a lot or just sometimes, all of your input is important to the boards. :) Hope to see you here more often. :)
