I know this isn't strictly a USO question, but you folks are so nice and helpful I thought I would run this question past you.

When I've stayed On I-Drive previously we've not tipped the maid until the last day, when we've left one big tip. I recently read that you should tip the maid on a daily basis. Given we're staying at your average run-of-the-mill place on I-Drive, how much should we be leaving for the maid on a daily basis? I don't want to peeve housekeeping off as I'll be asking them for extra coffee and tea

We leave $1 for everyone thats in the room, 2adults 1 child =$3 a day, most seem to apply this no matter where they are staying.

IMHO, good service is rewarded and poor service is not. If you get excellent housekeeping services, leave an excellent tip. If you get less than stellar service, tip accordingly.

I always have a "base" figure in mind and the tip can go up, or down, from there. We place a pillow in the middle of the bed and put the tip on the pillow every day when we leave the room. If we want something extra, we leave a note, and a larger tip. If we come back to the room to get ready for dinner and our room has not been cleaned, we leave less.

You should always tip each day in case the person who has been taking care of your room has the day off when you check out. We have, at least on one occasion, gone to management at checkout and left an extra tip for an exceptional housekeeper because we want to make certain management knows about a job well done and to make sure the housekeeper gets her tip.

Hope this helps others. . . it has worked well for us over the years.

I printed slips out this time with a thank you note on them and left $2 each day (there are 2 adults) for housekeeping. I've left a tip for them in the past and as they weren't sure if it was for them or whether it had just been left they didn't take it.

Our housekeeping was very good so we upped it to $3 after a couple of days.

I tip each day because you don't always get the same housekeeper each day. The guideline I was always taught to follow is $1.50 per bed per day, so if we're in a double/double room, I leave $3.00. If the room has only a king size bed, $1.50.
