Tipping valet attendents-protocol?

I always park my car, but I know I am about to go to some places in Florida this trip that the hotel is valet only. Am I supposed to tip when I drop off the car and when I pick it up?

About how much?

Any ideas?

We usually give them a dollar at drop-off and pick-up. If there are excessive conditions, or they handle bags, we tip more. We were leaving Nashville during the epic flooding and rainstorms in 2010 and the bellman/valet had to retrieve our car and load our bags in a blinding rainstorm that blew their umbrellas inside out (no covered area available at this hotel). We tipped much more than usual for that!
