Okay just returned from the World on the 23rd......have gone many times and I still don't know if I am tipping enough, too little or what. I felt like I was tipping 10-12 bucks left and right on this trip. Now we were picked up by our fave car service. I tipped him 20 and he dropped us off at SSR and bell services got our bags from him, tipped that guy 10 bucks to store it for 1 1/2 hours, then tipped the guy that brought it another 10 bucks 1 1/2 hours later. Okay......then two days later we moved across the hall from where we were....(that is another story), bell services picks it up again....ANOTHER 10 BUCKS, THEN LATER THAT DAY WHEN WE MOVED....they brought our luggage again..and I tipped another 12 bucks on that one. I liked the guy. LOL He was very nice. Then three days later we moved to BWV, tipped our bell service guy to pick it up once again for it to be transferred, another 10-12 (at this point I don't even remember) then when we got to BWV later that day....they brought the luggage to our room, ANOTHER TIP. Then we checked out 3 days later and they picked it up again ANOTHER 10 BUCKS and stored it for the day (we left a few hours later) and when we got back we had them bring it out to our car service so ANOTHER TIP but this time they just had to roll it out a little ways from where it was stored so I only tippped 5 bucks and then I tipped the driver of the car service 15 bucks
again. Now we had 10 bags (various sizes nothing huge) for a family of 5 plus a few grocery items/drinks. I JUST FELT LIKE I TIPPED EVERY TIME I TURNED AROUND. Now granted...had we not moved across the hall....that would have been 22 bucks I would not have spent. If we had gotten the same driver on the return I would have only tipped him 10 since I had already given him 20 and the fare was 90 roundtrip. I just felt like I had to tip the different guy 15.

So my husband said....the guy at SSR that put the luggage/groceries on the rollaway cart to store it while we checked in....should have only gotten 5 bucks....like we did when we left BWV on departure day. He said the ones that drive your stuff up to you or bring it to your room deserve more. So what is everyone's thoughts on this.

Oh....and I also tipped the housekeeper 10 bucks when the room we moved into across the hall...HAD NOT BEEN CLEANED....THAT IS ANOTHER LONG STORY. I just felt so bad for her.....that I couldn't NOT LEAVE HER SOMETHING. But I really didn't have to tip her....this room should have been ready at 4 when they said it was and sent us to that room.

You sound so much like me it isn't funny. I think you tipped well enough, probably over tipped. The trouble I have when going is I feel so great being on vacation in the beginning, and then toward the end (when I am running out of money) I start over thinking everthing. You did what you felt was right, it made you feel good at the time, don't look back.

We usually do the $10. tip for each leg of bell services, but is sounds like you did a lot of moving this trip and it caught up with you! Just wondering, why you move across the hall? Different room category or because you didn't like your first room?

Not to hijack the thread, but on the subject of tipping...

If the valet calls a cab for you do you tip the valet? (Because I didn't.)

When you check your bags at the resort to be transported back to the airport do you tip the person who prints your boarding passes and such? Because again, I didn't, but after I thought about it the lady made kind of a point about saying "This is JUST LIKE curbside check-in, and so-and-so will be your sky cap." Sounds like a tip was expected there, but I didn't think much about it until later. At our home airport they CHARGE for curbside check-in.

Opinions?

I tip $1 per bag, and believe me, bell captains are always kind of shocked to get a tip at all from a single woman, $10 and $20 a pop seems extreme. (And believe me, I'm a good tipper, at restaurants and elsewhere.)

But $10 for every time you moved your bags? Ouch!

One time when we were staying at SOG....they had to put us in a higher priced room our first night because we added a night way after we made the original ressie....well that night we tipped our car driver, the bell services to take it, then to bring it, to get it the next morning and then bring it to the room we would have the rest of the trip the next evening.

Good for you for being that generous but there's no way that i would tip $10 everytime someone moved my luggage. I would think $1 per bag or a total of $5 would be enough just to move my luggage.

I tip, but never that much. That is awesome that you did that, but I always heard it was standard $1 per bag. Extra if someone goes above and beyond.
I am REALLY bad about never having cash on me, so I am now making it a point to carry some cash with me while traveling especially. I don't do it to stiff anyone, I am just honestly a space cadet when it comes to stuff like that. Every other place I can put it on my card or in the check.

I would really like to know how much everyone tips on dining. We usually eat at least one meal a day in a priority seating restaurant. However, my DH and I often are unsure exactly how to handle tipping. 15-20% is standard outside DW but does that apply inside, too!

I'd like to hear what everyone does.

I probably would have tipped about 1/2 what you did each time and felt good about it.

Okay, I could write a huge response to this thread, but I'll keep it simple. I'm posting this under my fiancee's username but I just had to voice my opinion. I am a bellman and my fiancee is a cocktail server at a five diamond resort so I feel very qualified to respond. $2 per bag for a typically sized bag is the MINIMUM! If your bag is extremely heavy $5 per bag is MINIMUM! If you are having food or beverage service and the service was good a 20% tip is the MINIMUM! Again these are minimums expected for basic service, if you should get above average service you should give an above average tip. $1 per bag to a bellman or a 10% tip for your waitress is an insult. As for you Canron thank GOD for karma, I can only believe that you get the service you pay for. I'm sure you expect to be paid for doing your job and so do we. Trust me, anybody who works for a resort is not getting rich. We depend on tips to make the bulk of our pay. So if you want a genuine smile and friendly hello from your service workers be sure to show how much you appreciate our hard work. Thank you's are nice but they don't pay the bills.
