We are at HRH right now and was curious what people tip the bike guys who take you to and from the hotel and parks. We tipped $5.00 each for two rides (2 people in each) and they seemed insulted. Their sign says to tip what you want and I thought that was fair for a what 3 minute ride.

$5 for a ride, i think that is fair.

last year many of the rickshaw peeps were not busy when i was leaving the park.

a couple asked me if i wanted a ride back to rph. (i was planning on the boat)
i told them i only had my room key for charging things in the park with me and $1.50 in cash.

one guy said, "i'll take that $1.50, get in".........

i did tell him i was sorry but i didn't have anymore cash on me.
he told me some people don't tip, some over tip, and he would work for what was given to him.

he did tell me he always gets a fare from that hotel once he dropped off a guest.

as i got out of the rickshaw, a person flagged him down for a ride back to the parks.

It all depends on how much I've had to drink. I get happy when I get tipsy so I tip anywhere from $5 to $25, but in general, $5 seems very fair to me. I've never had any of them act anything but appreciative.

We used the rickshaw for the first time this year. We gave him $10 for the two of us and he was happy with that.

The guy was sat beside the security bag checker down from Margaritaville and it was only DH and myself that afternoon, DS stayed in the park.

When we got to the other end we asked him what was usual, he replied similar to what Macraven said....whatever we thought, as everyone had different ideas to what they should give.

We used them 1/2 a dozen times last week and $5 is what I tipped, they seemed cool with it.

what is the cost to ride other than the tip?

$5 seems pretty fair to me! We never used them. We Actually found it very irritating to have to say no to a pack of them every time we walked to and from the parks. We stayed 6 nights at the HRH Christmas 2010 and were back and forth at least 3 times a day, which means I had to tell them no 6 times a day. Not a huge deal, but a little irritating.

Sorry for the blurry pic, I asked my daughter to take that one and only one was taken.

Geez, that doesn't seem right. Isn't there a min wage law in Fl that would prevent them from working without pay?

Idk.

But if you say they make one trip per hour at $5 per trip, they are making $25 per hour. I bet you they make out better than that.

Totally with you on this. We enjoy the walk from the hotels to the parks/CW and preferred it more before the rickshaws arrived.

But to answer the OP's question ... yes, 5$ is totally fair for how short that ride between security and the HRH entrance is (where they drop you off anyway).

The company that supplies the bikes get around this by renting the bikes to the guys & girls that operating the bikes.
They themselves set their own work schedule. I even had one tell me when it gets slow or he gets to tired and hot, he goes to the movies. I asked him what movies he had seen and he said all of them 2 -3 times LOL. They are basically self-employed.

He took me back from IOA to RPH because I forgot my pass and hotel key up in my room for early entry :confused3 I told him I would be right back and needed a ride back asap, He said he would be there and if he had caught a fare to IOA he would turn around and come back empty if he had to.
I came down and he was right there waiting, I gave him a $20 he pedaled like the wind.

:lmao: I bet he did!

Lol yes but there is alittle more to the story. Our vacation was shortened by 3 days I didn't want to travel do to a extreme headache of mine the lasted 2 weeks .I didn't pay him for the ride from IOA to RPH.I had no cash( no wallet) he took me anyway.he was there waiting on the promise I'd be back. I was with my DW and DS at early entry I ran from the gate at IOA to the back of margaritaville in the Aug heat I was done running !! but he was a pedaing both ways.

Plus I made it into the park losing very little time after the opening to join dare I say my family in line at olivanders.
Money well spent by me and well earned by him if you ask me

I would have done the same! Very worthwhile. I have a similar story - we got to the gate for EE and I had my husbands annual pass not mine! I grabbed his lanyard. We were staying at HRH so I left the kids and told them when they let you in go! I ran like the wind to get back before the crowds took over Harry Potter. Not a bike in sight - so I ran there and ran back. I would have been so happy to see a bike and give him $20.00.:lmao:

i'm with you on this, Jodie. we just got back from PB and didn't realize how irritating they were. had my mom with me in a wheel chair and we walked to and from the parks every day. we about got run over several times! also - we had the PB suite right by the boat dock and the bikes would unload right in front of our patio- it got old after awhile.

We spent some time chatting with one of the drivers the last time we were out. He said that people usually tipped between $5-20 for a ride, but he had a tip as high as $100 before. He also said that it wasn't uncommon for the drivers to sit waiting for a rider for an hour or more on some days.

The three times we used a driver on our last trip, I gave $8, then $10, then $15 (but that was when it was pouring).
