tipping porters when dropping luggage off

....
As an alternative if you don't want to tip and not have your bags mis-handled I thought I read somewhere that there was actually a location that you could drop off your bags yourself (couldn't find the thread) anyone with information or experience with this?

All the bags go to the porters at the fence. Whether a porter takes your bag from the curb to the porters at the fence, or hand them over to the porter with the cart at the fence doesn't really make that much of a difference as far as tipping goes IMO.

I give them a $1-2 per bag tip if they are friendly and nice, greet my family, open my door for me, etc.

The porter we had when we arrived at PC for our last cruise was very rude. He didn't even say hello or ask before giving us assistance with our bags, also he didn't even attempt to open anyone's doors! We only had 3 bags anyway, one of which was super small, but we only tipped him $2 considering he didn't really provide friendly service... And he had the nerve to hand my boyfriend back the tip. :confused3

I think that ordeal had a little something to do with one of my bags arriving at my stateroom at 6:30! Sorry, just had to get that off my chest!

Hmmm, I wonder if it was the same guy?!

I strongly suggest tipping. On one of our trips all the bags for our room of 7 people ended up missing. My younger brother gave them to the porter when i wasn't looking and did not know about tipping. Much later in the evening, after dinner, the bags were found with no tags on any of them.
Could have been an interesting trip. :hippie:

So I do always tip the porters too.. but you pose an interesting question here... if it doesn't make a difference as far as tipping goes who should you tip? b/c typically the tip goes to the porter that takes your bag from the curb/car to behind the fence. Do you tip the guy behind the fence then? and if so does that mean you should tip both regardless?

the guy heard dh tell me he only had three singles and a fifty/asking me and kids for $$ but I was busy juggling a car seat and making sure dh didn't give in the wrong bag w/our passports in it, ad nauseum and hearing dh's plea to me the guy didn't offer, he made a few snotty comments instead... it happens... and it's entirely possible it was a coincidence that it was due to a careless guest or perhaps a combo of a careless guest and a disgruntled porter taking full gross advantage. Who knows?! (But I know we will never not tip the porter well again!)

What is interesting is that throughout this thread so far in the cases where Tips weren't given something bad resulted to someones luggage... interesting commentary on the service being provided, usually the concept of tips is to reward good service, not extortion so that bad things don't happen....

always tip....those guys work their butts off in crazy hot conditions...

Again I'm honestly not advocating not tipping b/c clearly we all want our bags to get on board safely... No offense but it's not always Crazy Hot, and not sure if it's working their butts off to take bags from the curb to behind the fence...

We do. It's polite. Both cruises we've been at the curb and they come up and greet us with a good morning and smile. We're returning the good morning smile.

we cruise in August- its never been anything but crazy hot and i've witnessed them handling some very heavy bags...

i don't tip because i want all my bags i tip because were the roles reversed and i was doing that type of work, i would really appreciate a tip...

on the flip side of the coin i remember my wife telling me 3 cruises ago when she handed the porter $15 for four bags he couldn't thank her enough...

We tip the driver from Country Inn, we've had both the petit woman and salty man (both excellent), and they both handled the heavy luggage like it wsa full of feathers! Then when we get to the port we tip the porter there generously. Never had bad service. All three debarktations we had to hunt and search for our luggage with no help so noone to tip then!

If you want help, seek out a porter (the people standing there with big luggage cart things) and "hire" them. As you are coming down the escalator, look for them. Or once you're out of the elevator look for them. They are experts in their terminal!

Open...the car doors? You want that? I can't tell you how much I would dislike that. I'm often having a last-minute conversation with DH, often about tip money, and the LAST thing I want is for someone rushing me by opening my door. (and no I didn't like DH opening my car door while we were dating, either.)

We aren't gargantuan tippers by any means, but haven't yet had a problem with our bags.

Both our cruises on debarkation we got off the ship and are asked for our room number. Both times they have been bang on like, first green row, walk to the back they are on the top shelf

I most definitely want my car doors opened, that's part of their job! During both of the other cruises I've been on, the porters have been very kind, opening our doors for us and greeting us with a "Good morning!" and a smile, and a bit of friendly chit-chat as well. No such thing from the rude porter last time. He didn't really deserve any tip at all - I'd have rather walked my bags the 5 steps behind the fence myself.

Also, I always have the valets/bellhops open my car door for me when I pull up to any Disney Resort that isn't a value. Additionally, my boyfriend is a valet and works right near the bellhops at the local conference Hilton - he says it is in fact part of their jobs to open the guests' doors for them. Maybe you just always open your doors before they get the chance to do so - I'm usually still gathering my carry-ons! :goodvibes

We actually typically tip pretty huge amounts for our servers and we always add an extra dollar or two to the already 15% added gratuities of our specialty drinks while on the cruise. The DCL crew members are amazing and they deserve it for the work they do, plus I'm choosing to utilize their services. Honestly, I hate being forced to use the "service" that is a porter at the cruise terminal - so they'd better make it worth my while and at least be friendly/personable. It's part of their jobs.

Interesting - I can't say it's ever occurred to me to tip the guys to take the bags when we arrive at the port. I've never had any issues with our bags on the two cruises we've done so far.

In truth, I don't plan to as there's no choice in the matter. Disney doesn't give me the ability to carry my bags up to my room myself, I have to hand them over and wait a few hours for them to make it to my door. I can't justify tipping for receiving a "service" that I don't even want.

No, it's not part of their job, they don't work for Disney, they are Port Authority employees that are paid to gather luggage from cruisers and get them into the baskets to be loaded on the ship. They aren't valets or bellhops.

We don't tip either, never have, and have never had any problems with our bags.

My thoughts exactly! I've never tipped and never had any issues with my bags.

We couldn't have gotten the kids off the ship as easily if it weren't for the porters in the luggage area. Every cruise there have been several at the bottom of the escalator or heading on their way. I wave to get one of their attention, tell them our room number and how many bags, and they gathered all of them on their cart. They always offer to take our carry ons as well and lead us through customs. Every time we park at the port the porter has also loaded our bags into the vehicle. This was especially helpful when the kids were younger and not exactly happy about leaving Mickey and their new friends onboard.
