Tipping movers?

Is it customary to tip movers? If so, how much??

We are moving to Florida (yay!) and we have 3 people here now packing up the entire house. Tomorrow, a different crew will come load the truck and drive it to our new house. It's a big job, but I have no idea what is "normal" when it comes to tips for something like this. (we have 4 bedrooms and a bonus room, about 2300 sq ft)

If it matters, our company is paying for the entire move.

Thanks!

well, I have only done local moves, but always have had three men and I bought their lunch, had drinks for them and tipped them 20 each and that was a one bedroom, 6 hour move, with storage. So I guess I would take the total of the move, maybe do a % divide by 3? like a meal tip?

DH's company paid for our move as well. We had 2 movers, a father and son team. We moved from a 3 bedroom 1 bath 1190sq ft home in California to a 5 bedroom 3 1/2 bath 3000 sq ft home in Kansas. We really didn't have that much furniture. We bought a lot of new furniture once we moved here.

I didn't know how much to tip either, so we called our relocation agent. We tipped what she suggested, I think we ended up tipping $400. It's hard for me to remember now. We also bought them meals while they were packing up and unpacking.

We also gave $20 each and bottled water.

Have done 5 moves in the last 16 years (military). We feed the movers and provide drinks throughout the day - both packing days and actual moving days. And on both ends. We do not tip for every move, but we have tipped when they do something extra - like going to our storage unit and loading or unloading, help getting us set up (putting beds together), around the holidays (2 of our moves fell on December 20-23... guys got our stuff to us and unloaded so we could celebrate).

We gave between $40 and $75 to each person.

We received estimates for the job based on hourly charges. The moving company we chose ultimately came in $200 under their estimate because they were really efficient so we gave the guys the $200 to split four ways.

Many military moves here...
We provide donuts if they arrive in the morning, lunch (Burger King etc.), snacks and sodas/water, and tip about $10-20 each depending on how good the service was.
I think this is fairly standard for military families, not sure about the general population.

We've only paid movers to move us one time. We used a local company that is a division of a substance abuse treatment program. We moved about 5 miles from a 1500 sq ft house to a 2300 sq foot house. With two weeks storage in between and different crews each time.

Each crew was about 8 guys and they are not allowed to accept tips. So we stocked a cooler with water and gatorade and at lunch time ordered each of them their own pizza (we asked them what toppings they wanted and ordered them whatever they requested). They seemed really pleased. I would say the total cost for each move "session" was maybe $100. So $200 total in "tips".

DH just got a fabulous job offer so when our house sells we'll use this company again and do pizza again.

Glad I saw this. Did not think about tipping the movers when the time comes to move. I have so much on my mind that is one thing that did not pop in to it. :confused3

I don't remember if I tipped last move. I know I always offer soft drinks, food, etc. :)
