Tipping help

I think on our 7 night we gave extra $80 to the stateroom host, $60 extra to head and assist. server, and $20 extra to head server. Family of 4. We also write in extra when getting drinks even though there is auto-gratuity included. I always wondered what was 'typical' to add, so I'm glad for this thread!

I think that's very generous. If we followed this rule, for us on our last 5 night cruise, that would total:

Stateroom Host: $100
Server: $100
Asst. Server: $100
Head Server: $50
Total: $350

What we actually tipped extra was:
Stateroom Host: $30
Server: $15
Asst. Server: $15
Head Server: $0
Total: $60

For context, our stateroom host was great and she was very appreciative of the extra tip the following day when we saw her. Our meal service team was the worst we've had sailing on DCL. Not attentive, late with service, did not deliver ordered items. We sometimes sat for a very long time waiting on apps, when other tables they served were already finishing up their mains (we did not show up late).
I understand that. For us, it is just my wife and myself.

We have cut it back on some not good service before, but we have been very luck and have a lot of great teams.

"ranging from around $36,469 per year for entry-level roles like Quick Service Attendant"

Since they don't get days off, that's around $100 a day. With a ten hour day, about $10 an hour.

Regardless of hourly wage, the crew has a choice of being employed by DCL. If you talk to the crew, you will find that many have been with DCL for a long time. We don't get lost in arithmetic. If I was standing on land, I'd still tip very similarly. We get room service every morning and for this we tip $5 each time. If the room attendant keeps our carpet vacuumed and responds to our requests we tip $10/day - if they can't do this the tip reduces. We feel the tip is 'earned' and not a 'given', and earning the extra isn't hard to do.

We had a room service crew say, "This will be the last day you'll see me." I felt like taking back the $5 tip. IMO, it was a self-serving statement. All I did do was say, "Thank you." and opened the door. Could be he was just reminding us not to order room service for the next morning... yep.

My view is I am lucky enough to cruise so I try to be generous with the crew that makes the experience so wonderful. Same for eating out, getting my nails done etc. They work hard and I am personally happy to reward that. But I also believe in pixie dusting the crew who can't be tipped and also make keychains for WDW CMs (Resin Mickey's with the words 'you are the magic') so I might be strange. I like helping out and feel lucky to be in a position that I can.
