When I took my first cruise and my sister calculated the tip for her family her first comment was "That is outrageous. We won't be tipping that much. The kids tips shouldn't be the same as adults. " yada, yada, yada. Once she calmed a bit and at her husband's suggestion she calculated the "land value" of their meals and what those tips would be she backed down. In the end she tipped above the recommended amount because we did receive what we considered to be exceptional service.
It can hit you when you first see the amount but even without considering the hours the crew work and where they are from and all that, the tips are a small part of your trip and DCL still lets you control how much you tip unlike some other cruise lines.
