Tipping for Housekeeping

I have tried looking everywhere and can't find an answer...

How much do you tip housekeeping? Do you tip every day (if so, how?) or do you wait and tip at the end of your trip?

When we've tipped before, we've usually just left money in the room at the end of the trip. I never know if it's enough or if we're doing it right.

I'd appreciate any help!

You don't have to tip housekeeping. Disney does not consider them to be a tipped position, and they are actually among the highest paid CMs.

Unlike other untipped positions, though, they are allowed to accept tips if they are given. If you want to tip them, $1 per person per night is standard and should be left each day.

How much does a mousekeeper make/hour on average or starting wage? I ask because "highest paid" may still be not paid well.

I think they start around $8.50 or $9.00 per hour. Not exactly well paid, but extremely well paid for WDW.

That isn't how it works.

Some housekeepers know how to make towel animals and some don't.

If you want to tip, then you should definitely do so, but it isn't more likely to get you towel animals.

We tipped $5 everyday and most days they didn't even take the money. My sister was pretty disappointed because she made a special envelope for everyday with the money in it and they never once took the envelope; even when we made it clear they could keep it.

We only had the Mickey head shaped towel once and that was the only character we got. It might have had something to do with the fact we stayed value but it was disappointing.

We won't put so much thought into tipping next time. Not because of the towel animals but because of they didn't take most of the money

I leave the money when we leave the room each morning in case we do not have the same Mousekeeper the entire length of our stay. I would hate to tip $10 the last day and the person cleaning the room that day get the whole $10 for maybe only cleaning the room for us once or twice while someone else may have cleaned the room the prior days. Just my thinking.

At that low of a wage I have no problem tipping at least $5/day.

I left a note with $5 on the second day asking for towel animals. We were there for 10 days at Pop and got one everyday

I realize now that the reason I've had such a hard time finding out the answer was because I called is "housekeeping" instead of "mousekeeping!"

I appreciate the help because I never know what to do in that situation.

I print my tip envelopes with a picture from our area and I will put
$ 1.00 per person in the room...Last year I did put more in as my step granddaughter was a slob!!!!!! And to top the whole iratated thing, she herself is a housekeeper!!!!

I agree with daizieduck. Tipping daily just in case there is a different cleaning person for part of your stay.

Also, if you have connecting rooms, you may have 2 different persons cleaning each room.

On the towel thing. . .DH and I always have gotten towel animals. I think the key may be that our room is well-policed every morning. Our towels are in a heap by the door, the sinks swirled out and clean, our beds are tucked up or pre-tossed, depending on whether or not we're getting our sheets changed, All our things are up off the floor, off the counters, and tucked away in a tidy fashion.

Housekeepers are given X minutes to clean a room. If your room is shipshape and in perfect condition so that they can just come in, grab the towels, do the beds, run the vacuum cleaner, scrub the bathroom and go, they will have time to make elaborate towel arrangements (I got a HUGE swan once that took up something like 4 towels.) and do cutesy things with objects in your room.

(Note: Some mousekeepers do pre-make towel animals out of cheap washcloths that they buy and you can actually keep those. I don't know how this is impacted by time and tips. . .but those are a very few mousekeepers, so don't expect it!)

I usually leave $5 a day, with a thank you on a notepad.

Lots of times they write back too!

Also easy to ask for extra shampoo, towels, etc. on a thank you note.
