If you're cheap like me and hate to fork over that 1-night deposit at the time of booking, here is something I discovered by accident a few years ago and use from time to time:

*book the cheapest room at any of the 3 resort hotels. I do this online but you can do it over the phone. They will charge you the price of that room + tax for 1 night as a deposit.

*call back in a little bit and change the reservation to the room/hotel you want. They won't charge you more for your deposit even if it's a much more expensive room.

As an example, I booked a standard room at DLH the other day at the Fall Rate and my deposit amount was $206 or something like that. I called back and changed it to GCH concierge, which had a rate of $399/night plus tax but I did not have to pay any more on the deposit. I saved over $200 in deposit money.

Of course, you still have to pay the difference eventually and this tactic is only good if (a) the room you want is a lot more expensive than the basic room, and (b) if you're not worried about the room you want booking up before you can call back. I wasn't too worried about (b) but I still opted to make my reservation at DLH just in case I couldn't get the Grand when I called back. Also, PPH was only a few dollars cheaper than DLH anyway.

I'm not sure this always works (or maybe it just works if you switch hotels). A few weeks ago I booked a standard room at GCH and paid the one night's deposit. Then last week I decided to upgrade to a theme park view and I had to pay the difference in the deposit amount right away. Glad it worked for you though!

Oh, really?! I have done this about half a dozen times and never been charged more. Sometimes it's within the same hotel and sometimes not. Maybe it has to do with whether or not you're an AP holder? I don't know if that shows up in the computer or not (they always see my address without my having to give it again, so maybe they can see if you have an AP).
