Recently we filled out our 11th grade electives, and it asked us if we were planning on going to college.
Today I got called down with 3 other girls to the career counselor to go over SATs/ACTs/PSATs, resumes, scholarships, blah blah blah.

I'm 130th out of 565 (this is just my sophomore class) and my GPA is 88.6.
Yeah, it's not number 1 and it's not the best I can do, but it's pretty good given my situation. Last year I was 454th of 565 and my GPA was 65.9.

good for you!:thumbsup2
its good that you tired YOUR best!

Kelsey I'm not done trying! We're only a little bit more than halfway thru the school year.

The counselor was also telling me to take extra math and science courses, and that I'd have to take Calculus soon.
I'm scared, but I'll get a tutor or whatever I have to do to pass that class.

Wow, that's really something to be proud of, that's a huge shift! Congratulations! :goodvibes

Are you taking pre-calc next semester?

Wow thats an awesome transition!! Good job Sonya!!!

Uhh, we don't have a next semester lol. I'm in my last semester of 10th. I'm only taking academic classes (boo!) because of my poor grades last year, but I know the standard for 11th is algebra II here. 12th is algebra II. "Essentials of Calculus" is only for honors.

First offL YYYYYYYYAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYY for you! That's a great change!

Second, here the standard goes like this: 9th- Geometry. 10th- Algebra II/Trigonometry. 11th- Pre-Calculus. 12th- Advanced Calculus I and AP Calculus.

I'm one step behind, though. I started in Algebra I because my 8th grade math teacher had no confidence in me. So, I'm in AP Statistics instead of Calculus. Even the head of the math department was bewildered as to why I wasn't in his calculus classes. I may not like math, but it's not really hard for me.

Anyway, back on topic. KEEP GOING!

I wanna see you break top 100.

Thats what I meant. Next year. I'm just used to calling them semesters!

Yeah, our school is pretty lacking in that. We're poor (yet we can build $5 million schools  ). We're basically an urban school in a rural setting. The demographics are 55% black, 25% hispanic, 20% white. It's so bad that when you tell someone you plan on going to college, they're surprised and delighted at the same time.
Ours goes:

9th grade English 9, Algebra I, Earth and Space Science, World Cultures.
10th grade English 10, Geometry, Biology, American Cultures.
11th grade English 11, Algebra II, Chemistry, American Issues.
12th grade English 12, Functions Algebra III, Physics.

we go:

9th grade: English I, Geometry, Physical Science, World Cultures
10th grade: English I, Algebra II/Trig, Biology, Civics
11th grade: American Literature, Pre-Calc, Chemistry, American History
12th grade: English Elective (Writing and/or World Lit and/or AP English Lit), Math Elective (usually Calc I and AP Calc), Science Elective (usually Anatomy and Physiology), Economics

if we're bragging, i'm 77th out of 369 and my total gpa is a 3.5 and i graduated in three years instead of the normal four, and i'm still over 75% of the senior class. (i was ranked with the least number of credits of any of those 369 people) i wasn't in top ten percent (they get different robes at graduation) but i'm still pretty proud of that.

but really, the only rank that gets you anywhere anymore is valadictorian or salutorian. even still, most colleges don't pay attention to that either.

a good act score is really what you need. (i made a 23, which is like a 1400 on the sat)

Sophomore gets you no where here lol.
You get one credit course, and if you're lucky you might get some grade 11 course..
Credit course is either Modern History 110 (Mandatory to graduate) or a science.
I took Mod hist because I needed a french course really. And it's the easiest class I'm taking, I slept through 3 classes, and have 100 in it.

I was 100 something out of 500 kids in my graduating class. I graduated with a 2.8 GPA. I took the ACT twice and got a 22 on it both times. I had always planned to go to the college that I applied to so I got the job done. High school grades are important but not the best indicator of where you will accepted, especially if you are going for a school that is hard to get into.

That's really good Shelby!
I know that rank doesn't get you anywhere, but it does give you a high when you can say "I'm smarter than 435 kids in my class".

i don't understand how your gpa is. mine is on a 4.0 scale. what is equal to a 4.0 the way they do yours?
