Tink Got Me My Very Own Sharpies!- A Surprise Bday TR (3/8 Final Thoughts)

Give her incentive to read for Disney. I know we shouldn't bribe our children but if it means the difference between loving to read or not, I am all for it!

Well my thought has always been that she didn't want to read because she thought that I wouldn't read to her anymore. Last night she told me that is the very reason. We are trying to have her read some, me read some but she gives up on words that I KNOW she knows and says "I can't do it" I did tell her that we can't go to SWW until she reads a whole (SMALL/EASY) book to me. I hate pushing her and then making her hate it but I KNOW she can do it. Oh the joys of parenthood!!!

I don't have any real advice for the reading. Jackson LOVES to read and devours everything he can get his hands on. For a while when he was learning to read (and getting frustrated easily), he would read a page, then I would read a page. Have you read Junie B Jones together? Those pages are generally really short. you could do a chapter a night or something. Jackson always cracks up on those books. I have a ton I could send your way.

I told her that she might have a matching outfit with the boys for SWW and she was THRILLED!!!! She's actually okay with wearing repeats other than that.

Don't forget- YOU said an Ohana outfit too. So, SWW and an Ohana outfit- check.

Dallas also loves Junie! He also tells me he'll read the same book over and over and won't ever let me get rid of any. I cannot have a whole library in my house! LOL!

I was going to say though that I also did the each of us read a page thing. He doesn't like to read out loud for a long time (and I get it, although he is happy if I sit and read the whole book to him). Dallas has always loved books and I had forgotten until reading this that at the beginning he didn't like to read to me either. I didn't think much about it but made him do it (mean mommy) and I guess he got over it. Although I know he doesn't like to read nearly as much as J! He would never read while sitting on a swing! He would be way too happy flying high and wanted to jump off.

That's so funny! Does that mean the Tink tradition is over? Will Aisling still play along?

Denise

We don't have any of these Junie books...guess I'll make a run to Borders. Thanks for the tips. Kid can do high level math in her head...hates to read. HOW is she my kid?!?!?!

I said an OHana outfit for YOUR boys...not Aisling ;)

No I think that means that she'll play along because she still wants glow sticks and pins ;) :rotfl: (btw, Aisling's middle name is Denise...keep forgetting to mention that)

Don't go buy any! I have plenty to send to keep her busy for a while. I'll have Dallas go through the ones that he has read when he gets home! And I even still have your address and a picture that I have never sent! Gotta find the picture though.

We were struggling with Jordan and reading for a little while too. This is what worked for us - we sit down together and she has to read a book to me and then I read a book or a few chapters to her. We started with her on very, very easy books that I knew she would know every word of to build her confidence - she would get frustrated not knowing words or trying to sound things out. We also really practiced her sight words to build her foundation of core words. Now she is willing to read books that are a little harder and is sounding out some of the words that she doesn't know. I also find with her that reading earlier in the evening is better - if it is too close to bedtime she is tired and not focused and gets frustrated much more easily. She has moved up three reading levels at school since the beginning of the year! If you haven't read Magic Tree House books yet I highly recommend them as a series for you to read to her. Jordan loves them!!! They are very creative and imaginative which I think Ash would enjoy.

Sorry for the length but hope it helps!

Yup, I think this is a huge issue for us. By the time I get home from work/gym, and have dinner, and do nighttime routines....it's 8-8:30 before we can read. And she's way too tired at that point to practice sight words, read a page to me, etc.

I know it's hard to find the time some nights. Don't stop reading to your daughter all together. But perhaps you can start reading together a bit more. To engage them I'd do a combination of three things.

1)They read the first couple pages than I read the rest.
2)They read a sentence then I read a sentence.
3)I read but they have to follow along because I would stop at certain words and they would have to find the word and read it before I would continue.
4)I would read a page then we would stop and I would ask them to find certain words on the page or I would point to a word and they would have to read it to me.
5)One of our families favorites focuses on fluency. I would read a page like a robot with no emotion at all. Then my child has to re-read the passage adding the appropriate emotion.

As a teacher I'd like to let you know that when we sit down to read with a small group we usually have a focus. For instance, we might be looking at punctuation, we might be explaining what a noun is, or fluency, or retell, or imagery, or the first sound of a word, or syllables etc... We would never look at everything at once. It's just too much. That being said, sometimes we start out with a particular focus and the group we are working with steers us towards another. That's okay too.

The relationship between reading and writing is so intertwined. It sounds as if your daughter is favoring the writing at the moment. So why not spend more time writing. She will still learn sentence structure and improve her spelling that way. You could set up a journal for her at home. She might enjoy re-reading her journal to you.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that there is no ONE way to get your child to read.

Thanks C/Diamond! All great advise. She likes writing because someone, I presume the staff at her afterschool program just told her the letters ;) However, she does do better with her sight words when she writes them out as opposed to just memorizing them on index cards.

We already do suggestions 3 and 4. I think I'll try to do numbers 1 and 2 and get some easier books. I think most of the books we have (She is really into Berenstain Bears and Amelia Bedelia) have a lot of words she doesn't know so she gets frustrated trying to read a whole sentence.

Aisling has always been one of those children who doesn't slowly progress. She just decides one day to do something (she didn't really crawl- just walked one day, she one day decided to use the potty and stopped having day time accidents right there and then). Everyone keeps telling me that she'll just pick up a book and read the whole thing one day and shock me. But I'm getting anxious that this day will never come. Doesn't help that I read relatively early and my brother (who had a 170 plus IQ) was reading WHOLE books at 2! I don't have a good frame of reference!!!

That day will come! Dallas asked one day if he could read before bed. He picked up a Junie B book and wouldn't put it down until he was done. It was a Friday night so I couldn't possibly tell him to stop reading and go to bed. I was amused because right before that he would always pick super easy books to read and I had to make him read something harder. He loved to choose Biscuit. Every other page was woof! woof! I had never expected him to read a chapter book so early on without ever stopping or asking me for help.

thanks for the moral support Jessica!!!

Hey lady! I just got caught up again. Glad to see your thoughts on Wishes Dessert Party. Have heard mixed reviews but overall not something we're likely to try. Too funny about Aisling figuring out the Tink thing! She's such a smarty! It was nice seeing you last weekend as well. I look forward to getting together this summer.

Nice seeing you too! Questioned the Coach decision all the way home :rotfl2:

Did you book?!?!

For everyone else, I totally forgot to mention that I had a mini-DISmeet in Maine this past Sunday. Beka and I did outlet shopping. We met in person at WDW in Sept 2008 and have spent the last year and a half not getting our acts together to go shopping. But we finally did it last weekend and had a blast! Beka is NOT the kind of shopping partner I need....she encourages you to buy ANYTHING if it's a good deal! I was so close to getting a new Coach bag as the outlet had a 50% off sale (even on the clearance). But then I remembered that I have a trip coming up in a few months and need to replace a certain camera lens ;) So I saved my cash!

I'm STILL questioning not getting that Coach bag. But I'm glad I didn't spend the money. And no, we haven't booked yet. Waiting on free dining to come out but have decided on the last week in September.

I should mention that Jackson didn't love to read in K. It was really a struggle at first. He always loved me to read to him (even super long books like Harry Potter).

He seems to be a lot like A. He was begging for a movie and I told him that if he learned to use the potty, he could have it (thinking I would not have to purchase the movie for a while). He decided right then and there he was potty trained. Same thing with pacifier, bottle, walking. He just gets something and takes off without looking back. The day he discovered he could take a step was the last day he crawled.

Looking back, I guess reading was like this too. I don't remember the struggle at first because he just loves it now. don't get me wrong, he will take his DS over a book any day, but DS time is very limited. Don't give up hope, she will probably jump right in.

I found Amelia Bedelia books difficult for Jackson. He didn't understand terms like "draw the drapes" and other things that made the book funny. I spent more time explaining why it was funny than we did reading. It was a good lesson in vocab, but just added to the frustration of learning to read too. Junie B Jones sometimes is spelled the way she talks, and not the correct spelling of the word. J could easily figure those things out and her struggles were right on target with how J felt. Even now, he asks me to read to him sometimes.

Ohana outfits- I picked up a light blue fabric that I think will work for the hawaiian print. I love the ones that you found at your JoAnns, but I already both the other, so I will make it work. Cooper has requested hula/elvis/stitch and Jackson wants Donald with a surfboard. I can really only find Minnie or Lilo in hawaiian theme. Who do you think Ash would prefer?
