Timing of Buying More Points

We just got back from a 5 night stay at OKW and have reservations for a 6 night stay in a 2 br MK view at BLT in May.

We had to borrow points from 2013 for our BLT reservation. So we now have 90 points left in the 2013 UY.

If we go in January 2013 then we will need to borrow from 2014 UY, and even then we will most likely be short of the points that we need for a January 2013 stay.

Sooooooooo, it looks like we will need more points. The question is, when should we buy the points?

Should I look for a "stripped" contract now to get a better price per point or should I wait until next year to look for a contract with enough points for our trip in January 2013?

Here is some information about our current points: 160 at BLT with Feb UY.

Buying more points at BLT with a Feb UY is appealing to me, but we have also talked about buying at BCV to be able to reserve at 11 months.

a jan 2013 stay is at the end of your 2012 UY. you would only have access to any current 2012 pts + borrowed 2013 pts.

i think you will need more pts for jan 2013. (also, keep in mind that traveling at the end of your UY like that makes it riskier should you need to cancel.)

As far as buying points now or later is a personal decision. I would not buy a stripped contract unless I got a GREAT price. It seems to me that the stripped contracts are a little less expensive then the loaded ones but not by a lot. For instant if you bought a 100 point BLT contract for 95.00PP fully loaded with 2010, 2011 and 2012 points and you rented out the 2010 and 11 points that will lower your purchase price by 2000.00! (20.00 per point making it 75.00 pp) vs. buying 100 point contract for 85.00 only to get 2013 points. I always try to way out those option also to see what truly is a better deal. You will also have to factor in your comfort level on renting.

I would do a 1 time transfer and get someone else's 2012 points. (What ever you need for 2013 trip. ) If you catch up and do not end behind again in 3-4 yrs, just transfer in once in a while. If you find that ever after adding this you are not ahead add on and make permanent.

If you decide to add on versus just renting or transferring in points, a February use year at BLT is very common. You should see a number of contracts come through fairly frequently.

If you can front the cost, buying loaded and renting likely will net you greater gain overall.

First you need to decide which resort is your favorite so you can buy there. We actually did fact finding vacations doing split stays to verify which resorts we enjoyed the most and that is where we bought.

Next you need to decide if your current UY is the best or do you want to change to a different one. We bought April not understanding UY's then switched to October which works best for our vacation habits. We had to cancel vacations twice unexpectedly, once due to a forced job relocation and once due to a death in the family. Our UY allowed us to bank our points.

Striped or not, the points have a value so look for contracts that meet your criteria and adjust the value based on available points.

I expect resale listings it increase as we get closer to the holidays and dues payment time.
