Twenty years ago next week, my DH and I took my then 13 year old stepson to WDW for his first trip. We were using the just implemented post 9/11 military discount on spring break at the Poly. I was a member of the Disboards even then (different name).

My DSS was visiting us from out west where he lived with his mother. He normally came to us on the east coast for the summer, but DH was deploying to Kuwait so DSS came for spring break.

We did not realize our lives were about to change so much for the better. DSS let us know how things "really were" at home and that he wanted to live fulltime with us. We were able to immediately obtain full custody and he never went back west to live.

Fast forward 20 years: he is an awesome man with a beautiful wife, and now our 5 month old precious granddaughter. She will have her first WDW visit in Sept at BLT with all of us. Full circle!! Just had to share!

Time really flies. I looked at REI today, and it said I became a member in 2002. Oh boy. I feel old now.

That is a great story! Speaking of full circle Disney memories, this reminds me of another story I read on the YouTube comments section during the pandemic, for a video featuring typical park music. (Pardon if I've mentioned this on the boards before, but it's one of my favorites...)

This person said he grew up in a not-so-healthy household with parents dealing dealing with substance abuse. He saw a commercial for WDW on TV, featuring a kid running up to hug Mickey. Needless to say, he sees this ad, but his parents never take him to WDW.

Years later, this guy is a father of two kids himself. It's his youngest son's first trip to WDW, and immediately upon entering the park, there's Mickey. His son runs up and hugs him, just like in the ad. How cool is that?

Thank you! We have had our share of downs over the years. I had several years after my DD (10) was born where depression took over. But through my faith and with family love and support, we are happy and back where we (I) need to be.

My first trip to WDW was in October 1992 during the 20th anniversary celebrations, so thirty years ago now. I'll be there this September for the 50th celebrations. It feels a little like I'm coming full circle.
