Tim Tebow

I also dislike Tebow because he is a Bronco. I am a Raiders fan, I hate the Broncos. Their are a ton of NFL players that are just as or more religious than Tebow, but they keep it to themselves.

It is like people who find people making out in public offensive, doesn't matter if you're gay or straight or how much you love the other person, I don't want it right in front of me.

A lot of Tebow lovers are saying "SEE! he IS a great QB, he finds ways to win!" The answer to that is no he's not. He is just doing things that the NFL defense isn't used to. Remember the wildcat by the Dolphins a few years back? They crushed people with it because defenses didn't know how to react. They adjusted and it ended. The Broncos are the same thing, you can't ask your defense to score every week and hold opponents to under 20 points, you can't pass for 100 yards a game and win. Teams will adjust and crush you.

I've noticed the same thing regarding freedom of speech. Everyone supports freedom of speech for themselves and for those they agree with, but as soon as someone else uses their freedom of speech to say something they don't like..well, the feeling changes quickly.[/QUOTE]

Ding ding ding!
We have a winner here!

You hit it right on the head and I have noticed it for a long time. Hypocrisy is alive and well.

Who said Tim couldn't say what he wants? No one. Tim can be who he is and tout his religion 24/7. Those of us who find it repulsive can also voice that opinion.

Someone several posts ago said that there were other players who were/are highly religious and that's true. Reggie White is the first one who comes to mind for me. Even Reggie, an ordained minister, didn't feel the need to push his version of faith on everyone. He led by example and had most people's respect.

I think too many people misconstrue his love of Jesus/God with being preachy, when I think its just who he is. I am not religious yet I don't feel like he is being "holier than thou", he's just being a happy, friendly guy and he likes to thank his religion for that.

I also notice that he is a great motivator and great speaker, which can help his team in ways other than X's and O's...he will probably make a great coach.

I've lived in Central Florida for the last 4 years and it was all Tebow all the time around here while he was at UF. He doesn't only talk about his faith, I've seen plenty of interviews where he doesn't mention it at all. He almost never mentioned it in post game interviews. His most famous speech as a Gator was called "The Promise". Florida had lost a game they should have one, they played horribly, and his post game interview was a promise that he made to the players and the fans that he would work as hard as anyone could to sure it never happened again. It's on a plaque at the stadium and on T-Shirts all over Gainesville. The only thing he says about faith is a "God Bless" as he ended, which is hardly a sermon.

I do think that when he does interviews now, the interviewers take the conversation there deliberately so he will say something about it. They know it's something that makes him controversial and that sells papers and gets people to watch.

My DH works for a sports media company and they've had an interview scheduled with Tebow for WEEKS now... and every time he has a bad week, his agents cancel the interview. Then he plays decent and his agents call back and want to put the interview back on. :rotfl:

(I have absolutely no opinion on Tebow whatsoever... not into college football and I watch the Steelers)

Tell us how Tebow is pushing his version of faith on everyone. :surfweb:

People may criticize Tebow's throwing, but there were a few seriously good throws that his receivers keep dropping. Despite that they're still winning.

People are also saying that the defense is playing well now, and weren't before Tebow took over....like that is coincidence? Maybe they have more faith in their team (no pun intended) now.

It appears that Tebow is like a bumblebee; all the science says a bumblebee shouldn't be able to fly, but it does; all the experts say he shouldn't be able to win, but he's been doing it.

Don't get me wrong; I still think he's a dweeb, but I thought the same of Elway, too. :)

I'd kind of like to hear this answer as well.

Mentioning God or Jesus in an interview as in "I thank God that I am able to do whatever" doesn't really seem like "pushing faith" to me. However, since I'm a Christian myself perhaps I'm missing it. Or is my saying that I'm a Christian myself pushing?

I'm honestly not trying to be snarky. I don't want to be one of those pushy Christians that everyone complains about so I would like to know where the line is.

Not by the mainstream sports media. The only religion they or the normal mainstream media criticizes is Christianity. I have heard people called closed minded or intolerant or a bigot for making fun of or criticizing Islam, Judaism, Buddhism, and most other religions but have never heard someone called that for making fun of Christianity.

Even on these boards you will see that people like Tebow are often criticized for their faith and no one says anything but if someone were to criticize someone equally for their Islamic or Jewish faith they would be raked over the coals.

It is what it is and I'm not really bothered by it or anything but I definitely notice it. Criticism of Christianity is treated differently than criticism of any other religion by the mainstream.

Yep, hit that one right on the head.
I read an article online from a major Sports Network about the exact same thing.

Here is an excerpt from an MSNBC article that sums it up for me:

"Overall, Tebow nevertheless handled himself very well, as he always does. And while it’s impossible to know whether the too-good-to-be-true Tebow routine is indeed the true Tebow, he tends to say and do all the right things, all the time. And that’s good enough for me.

Even if he’s falsely polite, he’s polite. Even if he’s falsely humble, he’s humble. Even if he wears his many charitable acts on his sleeve a bit too much, he nevertheless engages in many charitable acts.

So while I’m not yet a full-blown Tebowmaniac, Tebow is a guy whom I’d like my son to respect, admire, and emulate. And that’s probably the best compliment I can ever give Tebow, or really anyone."

And several here have mentioned that it is not every single interview. Also how the media has led into this with the line of questioning. Does it make some of you uncomfortable if you sit down for lunch with friends and they bow to say a quick prayer before they eat? If so, why?

Pretty much my position too. I confess that I am not a big Bronco or Tebow fan so I don't mine the internet for a lot of stories about him. I could be missing a pattern, but in what I have heard from Tebow he doesn't seem to be "pushing his version of faith on everyone". Then again I too am a Christian and maybe I'm missing the point because of my Christ-colored glasses. :confused3

Christianity is very offensive to many people today.

eh, I don't care if the guy is a Christian. Anymore than I care that other football players are on their 2nd drug rehab stints, are facing felony gun charges, or most of the other messes football players get themselves into. Well, I hate it when I find out they beat up their wives and girlfriends or that they murdered somebody - they could kick those guys out of the league as far as I'm concerned. I'm not a huge fan of the dog abuser either but I still watch him sometimes.

But overall. It's football. I want to watch him play football, not have a deep and meaningful personal relationship. I don't agree with parts of his faith but over zealous Christianity really isn't a problem for me to have to consider before deciding whether or not I'll cheer. He seems to win games. Go Tebow!!!!!
