Tim Tebow

I know some people who support Focus on the Family but don't agree with their stance on gay marriage. They just like their stance on other issues and think those are more important on the balance. I don't really care for them personally but whatever.

The reason I make the political comparison is that I am completely for equal rights and if it was on the ballot I would vote for same sex marriage to be legal in any state I live in but I have voted for politicians that were opposed to it before. It wasn't because I agreed with their stance on that issue but because I agreed with their stance on other issues that superseded it. It would be unfair to claim that everyone that votes for a candidate is voting for every stance they take and I think it is unfair to do the same with an organization.

Look at all the furor over Target endorsing a candidate that was against same-sex marriage. People wanted to boycott and picket but nothing I saw indicated that that issue was why they contributed to him. His stance was better for business and publicly traded companies make their political contributions based on business issues, not social issues.

I don't know Tebow and I rarely even watch the NFL but I won't personally attribute his affiliation with FotF as his supporting every single one of their agendas. I don't think every person that is in or supports the boy scouts agrees with their stance on homosexuality but they find that the good they do outweighs it.

Just my opinion of course, I'm not trying to change any minds.

Good. Cause I'm not changing my mind. :lmao:

Same with me. I have friends who I don't agree with politically but we are still friends. I guess I am just saying the same goes for an organization. You don't have to agree with 100% of their views to support them if on the balance you agree with more than you don't. I am just giving Tebow the benefit of the doubt.

I think we all have people in our lives that differ from us in some manner or another.

This isn't politics though. This is specifically regarding an organization which offers an opinion based on the religious belief that gays aren't deserving of equal rights.

And...Tebow isn't my friend. He's a public figure who participated in an ad campaign for a known anti-equality organization. What message is he sending to his adoring public?

Hey, it took Santa a whole show to figure out that being different isn't a bad thing and let Rudolph be a part of the team and go get the misfit toys! :lmao:

I have no idea what Tim Tebow thinks of gay rights. I have no idea what Phil Simms thinks of gay rights, or Scott Stevens. I do know that I have enjoyed watching Tim and Phil play football and Scott play hockey. I thought they were all pretty decent guys-not showboaters or dirty players. They worked hard to be as good as they could possibly be. That's something I can admire.

I'm willing to give the kid some time to grow up a little. He's lived a very sheltered life as a home schooled kid and an athlete. As he gets out into the world a little more, like a lot of other young people he may find that his parent's values aren't necessarily right for him.

I understand why he isn't your friend, but as far as what message he's sending to his adoring public, its probably a favorable one. Not everybody hates Focus on the Family.

Like I said - Tebow does not offend me although I do wonder why his religion has to be brought up every single time his name is mentioned. And even though I do like seeing my Broncos winning (been a fan since the days of Red Miller and The Orange Crush) I don't like Tebow as a matter of principle. We are a 'Noles family here:

WOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

But Uncle Remus, you could say that about any group. There are "bad eggs" in any group or sub-culture that make the rest of them look bad. If we could discuss religion further here, I would get into why the Bible is not a contradictory book (and I'm sure you could tell me why you believe it is :goodvibes). We can agree to disagree though :). I enjoy your posts a lot (even if I don't always agree with your pov), and I certainly don't want to make an "enemy" of you.

I musta missed this post, my apologies, I was probably waitin' for the sale clock on Amazon. :headache:

:goodvibes Oh...I wasn't giving reasons why he's not my friend. :lmao: I simply meant that I wouldn't compare a sports figure who is representing an image to the public to a personal friend or acquaintance.

Just kidding, Buckalew. :teeth:

And I laugh at her jokes too...as long as she laughs at mine. ;)

Love him!! Not the Gators :D BUt I do respect him for standing up for what he believes in. Says a lot about his character.

TT is a man doing his job to the approval or disapproval of individuals depending on which side of the scrimmage line one prefers.

Praising after a victory is common yet annoying to me because I have yet to hear an equivalently enthusiastic praise after an embarrassing defeat.

After all, would not victory as well as defeat be attributed to the same higher power?

I have to wonder why he's getting all this grief when you can't watch a music award show when you don't see some rapper get up and "praise God" for the ability to spout lyrics that demean women and glorify violence.

You don't wanna be in our house when they do that! :lmao:

I think the logic (not mine) goes something like this... some people choose to label FoF as a "hate group". Tebow once did a promo piece for FoF. Therefore Tebow is the devil.
I'm not much good at the moral equivalency game so I couldn't say what it is a music artist would have to do/say in order to be seen in the same light as Tebow.

He discusses this at about 2:00 here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XjzZYSx1bU

What I really enjoyed about this interview was now much time he spent talking about the other players-receivers who made great blocks or catches, the offensive line, special teams and coaches. In a sports landscape full of show boating and bragging, that's pretty refreshing.

He started witht the thanks to God, but he was done with that and was talking about football until people brought up the religion again. That's why I think a lot of the "God talk" is being led by the media. It makes him a polarizing figure and that brings ratings.

Hate him or love him, Denver just won again... 6-1 record now with Tebow as the starter
