I was reading that they set up full service locations in the St Louis area, and already had stands in the arena where the Blues play.

However, I'm starting to think that it's false advertising to say they have locations in the San Francisco Bay Area. I read some reviews, and they state that the only Tim Hortons stuff they have is the coffee, but it's otherwise a rather generic greasy-spoon snack bar. This is the photo of the setup in Oakland:

Yes, they are a very recent addition to STL. They claim to have plans for a great deal of expansion here.

You guys are making me laugh! I had no idea Timmy Hos was disrespectful in the least. That's what everyone around here calls it. It's said with the utmost love and tenderness, I swear!

No biggy call it what you want. There are plenty of places with better coffee than Timmy's but Starbucks isn't one.

They were bought by BK last year and then BK moved their head office to Canada for tax reasons.

Just curious and somewhat bored so I checked obvious places using their store locator. They're listing isolated locations like Glendale, AZ at the Gila River Arena (where the Coyotes play) and Tampa, FL at the Forum (where the Lightning play). So I guess they want to associate themselves with hockey.

Not surprising at all once you know that Tim Horton was an NHL hockey player who played for several teams, including the Leafs, Penguins, and Sabres.

We were just home and had to switch from our usual Starbucks to Timmy's. (outside of Buffalo too ). All my family loves it and HATES Starbucks. I love my Starbucks but order something completely different at Timmy's.

I'd note that Winchell's isn't gone, but they have pulled way back from their peak. The articles I've read trace their downfall to the late 80s after they were bought by the company that owned Denny's at the time.

Here in California, the independent donut shop rules. There are still some open that I remember as a kid in the 70s. Many are owned by Cambodian immigrants and their families. I'm not a huge consumer of donuts, but every time I go into one I can tell that they have loyal customers who show up every day and sit at the same table or stool. The donuts themselves seem to taste the same - just a commercial mix. And they'll package them in pink boxes. We had a Winchell's in our hometown, but that didn't outlast the independents.

I will always have a Tim Horton's doughnut though. takes me back to my university days as we had a Tim Horton's kiosk on campus.

True, there aren't nearly as many around. Here we have about 12 Timmies, 3 Starbucks and 2 Second Cups. The city I grew up in has a population of about 130,000 and between 35 and 40 Timmies.

Well - I can appreciate "high-end" coffee. My personal favorite around here is a local outfit called Peet's Coffee and Tea. We also have places like Philz, Sightglass, and Blue Bottle. However, while I was in BC I appreciated the ubiquity of Tim Hortons and the reliability of the product. I got zero attitude and once I even needed to use their WiFi to program a map route into my phone (too cheap to pay for international roaming).

Also - I had to think in my head about the exchange rates. In that case it was actually cheaper than I thought just by looking at the prices on the board. There was some stuff that was depressing. I noticed several red buildings that used to be Target Canada. And talking to people on both sides of the border, a lot from the Vancouver area head right for Target, Walmart, and Costco in Bellingham, Washington. We made a pit stop at the Target there, and it seemed like a quarter of the cars had BC plates. My wife's friend noted that the outlet mall in Burlington relies on Canadian shoppers to survive since it's not that close to the big population centers in WA. How does everyone get around the duties? I read the rules, and they seem kind o convoluted depending on where an item is made (something to do with NAFTA?).

Side note - there was a time when Canadians flocked across the border to shop - not so much at present. I was down to the Buffalo/Niagara area last week for a concert & some shopping. We hit all the usual places, places where you would always see Ontario license plates dominate all others (in some cases even out numbering local plates)... last week we were in the minority, in one case - we were the only CDN plate on the parking lot.

Our dollar is a mess in comparison to the USD. $130CDN for $100US today. It was only 3 short years ago that our dollar was worth $1.10 U.S.

Did it at CIBC last Thursday morning before leaving home. I took $100US out of the instant teller at my branch. It prompts you for an ok before proceeding & displays the exchange rate (in case the shock makes you change your mind... lol!)
The bank slip detailed all.. $128.91CDN for the $100US -- it included the exchange rate in real time & forex plus bank service charges. I figure the extra costs added up to 4ish cents per dollar, because the listed rate was just over $1.25

The $20US I took out for gas in Niagara Falls came to $29.47CDN plus a $3 fee to use the ATM.

I personally could live without. I don't drink coffee, their doughnuts taste stale and they don't know what toast a bagel means. I do like their brfst sandwiches. I'm just happy to have a Panera in town now.

I love their bagels and they do have really good breakfast sandwiches. I also don't drink coffee but like the frozen hot chocolate...which is just really sweet chocolaty cold milk topped with chocolate whipped cream. LOL. I also love Panera and that is actually my morning stop twice a week. I love their breakfast sandwiches too...and awesome bear claws.

I am not a fan of the doughnuts but like the muffins.

All the ones I pass on my way into work have very long lines. Not sure if it is due to the actual coffee or due to the price.

I'm not a coffee drinker but did try and liked Tim Horton's breakfast sandwich and bits last summer on vacation in Buffalo. They weren't in Buffalo yet when I moved from there in 1977. We have had very few donut shops here until the last couple of years. We had a lot of Winchells when we first moved here but they died out for a while. Now there are a few Winchells and a few Krispie Cremes and in the past 2 years or so Dunkin Donuts have been popping up all over the city.

For those unfamiliar, Tim Horton was never a Superstar of that era, like Bobby Orr or Stan Mikita, but he was a steady, dependable, well-respected player who didn't take crap from anybody. He was playing for Buffalo but still maintained a home in the Toronto area when he was speeding home one night and was killed in an accident. I don't think alcohol was involved, but excessive speed was. IIRC, well over 100mph/160kph.

There are no Tim Horton's in this area. I think there are a few in northern NJ, and some "express" locations in Manhattan. Wegmans here sells TH canned ground coffee. I get my TH fix whenever I'm in Canada.

As a Canadian, while in high school, we all called it "T Hos". As an adult, I've dropped that in favour of the traditional "Timmies", but I DO know everyone in high school called it "T Hos" at some point or another.

Maybe it's because I grew up in Cornwall, ON? It's a border down, so maybe we were learning the term from the people in Massena, NY?! lol


I worked for a Tim Hortons for six months. I loved the job, especially since I worked in one of the double drive-thru, no-sit-down tiny ones. We didn't have to deal with people eating inside or using the washrooms. My favourite job was working the window.
